KIK messenger

I am quite intrigued by this messenger client as it has been available on Android, Blackberry and the Iphone.

Does it work similar to how people that use BBM but without the constraints of a BBM pin? I think you just need to get an account.

From what i have read that it does use data to send out a message.

Maybe if we send them enough messages they might consider making on for the N900?

I tried my luck and sent them a message, still waiting for a response.

I think it would be a nifty app to have.

Just wish there could be peace and unity in the world. By that I mean a universal chat system so you could communicate with everyone that uses IM. Instead of this broken system of needing to use BBM, kik, google talk, facebook, msn, etc.

and added to that non biased behaviours by service providers like those in my country who only supply internet to those with BlackBerry handsets

eBuddy is very great to have many IM's all at once like Pidgin does

Sure hope it'll be fixed for nokia n9 soon. A shame they haven't fixed it already, Kik is the best chat program.

The last symbian update was in April, the Meego version is still stuck in beta and we can pretty much assume its not actively being developed.

Oh well, they could have (like ebuddy) won over the Meego community but Whatsapp seems no.1 across all platforms and the fact maemo and meego both have (unofficial) support, I dont see much else dethroning it.

Apologies, I made a typo. The Beta version was for XMS, there was never a meego build of kik - which was disappointing seeing as it was written in qt and qml for s^3 ;/

I wonder if APKenv would work with this if it was "tweaked" a little.

Is there chance to be ported on n9 ???

dak_sriv 2013-11-17 06:01

I've used kik quite a bit. Regardless of it having a steady increase in the no. Of signups, it still probably wont have any of our friends on it. It's more of a 'know new ppl' rather than 'talk to your friends' app. A quick search '#kik' on Twitter would feed one with a never ending stream of kik names.

Kik has it's merits over whatsapp. Like BBM, it relies on usernames to identify & add people to the contact list. It's faster than whatsapp & offers sent, read & delivery notification. Kik is a good product, but it lags in user acquisition. Port To N9/Maemo wouldn't be much fruitful.

Port of the hyrbid BBM app or the WeChat app would prove more useful for us. Best part, wechat is a product or Tencent Tech, the largest IT company in China. It is one of the backers of the SailFish OS for Jolla. (I saw it's logo when the list of backers came out last year). We could probably assume that they'll make a native app for SailFish, a req for Maemo/MeeGo might get a reply. Shall we draft one?
