Ovi suite now compatible with n900

Hi guys,

Just worked up a sweat installing the new Ovi Suite 2.2.1.23 and guess what? It's fully compatible with N900. Only slight downside is OviMaps is still not on the horizon.Syncing is fine and done quite quickly..

Any comments or need help? Msg Me. :)

I'm using Ovi Suite with my N900 since bought it and sync, maps etc were working fine. With PR1.3 messages also works, so what is new in this version regarding N900.

Might be old news, but messaging still doesn't work with mine. In fact the sync messages options are all greyed out. I have version 2.2.123 installed.

Messaging works both with Ovi Suite and latest PC Suite.

Does anyone know if you can sync in one direction only with Ovi? I want to sync from N900 to PC only.

Re: Ovi suite now compatible with n900

The day Nokia decided to drop PC Suite for OVI Suite was a very sad day. I have used PC Suite for many years, but now when I try the functionality of the OVI Suite i am amazed that this thing is the Nokia future.

1. Conflict resolution is totally useless.
2. Advanced options is nowhere.
3. Nagging for Nokia login. wtf
3. Play with it if you don't mind cleaning up a mess (if you did not do a backup of contact and calendar in MS Outlook before you started).

Conclution: OVI SUite for Nokia N900 is a huge mistake from Nokia.

Lets hope its ONLY N900 that have this, regarding OVI Suite.

Can you sync messages in both directions? I have a lot of messages from my previous phone in OviSuite and I can sync them from N900 to PC only.

Well you say that, but on the 3 computers I have tried it on, with the latest versions of OVI and PC suites, messaging doesn't work and all mention of it is a greyed out.

So if you did something in addition to installing and hooking the device by USB please fill me in on the details.

For those who say "latest" version, could you actually state which version number instead? "Latest" is meaningless.

Re: Ovi suite now compatible with n900

I have a problem with contacts sync. Most of the time, I do my editing of contacts on the N900. When sync, the operation duplicates some contacts (previous + edited) and need to manually delete them from both Ovi and my N900. Any idea how to resolve this?

I cleared all the Ovi Suite contacts the last time to minimize this problem. Unfortunately, the same could not be done for Ovi online...so I stopped using Ovi online.

I used PC suite as well but Ovi is much better and easier to use

1. I used contacts from my old phone and Ovi kindly suggested to replace them and works just fine

2. Not sure what you mean by that , Options it Tools menu have a lot of options , is there anything in particular you miss?

3. It only asks once during the install and then you can sign off

(3)? 4. I think it works quite well and these whole Ovi idea looks nice, btw 3rd version is coming out soon :)

As you might have seen in my earlier post. And the "latest" publicly available version.

PC Suite version 7.1.51.0.

Windows 7 64. No messaging support on either programs.

I updated to Ovi Suite 2.2.1.23 and to my surprise message syncing does indeed work.

Not really, just set the sync options.

Running on XP under virtualbox FWIW.

With Ovi Suite 2.2.1.23 and PC Suite 7.1.51.0. works messaging without any problems. There is no need to hack.

Re: Ovi suite now compatible with n900

Messaging doesn't work neither for me. I have both versions of OVI and PC Suite. They were upgraded from previous version. Maybe I should remove them completely and make fresh installation. I will try.

kolos 2010-11-21 14:28

Re: Ovi suite now compatible with n900

I removed OVI and PC Suite, I also used for this PC Suite Cleaner. Now I only installed (again) PC Suite 7.1.51.0 and there is now sight of working messaging. Messaging window is empty, also under "File -> New" I have disabled "Message". My OS is Vista 32-bit.

EDIT: I installed also latest OVI Suite and situation is the same, no messaging support for me (and obviously for some others, too) .

PC Suite + XP Home 32bit and N900 + messaging

Re: Ovi suite now compatible with n900

Finally I can see messages in OVI suite 2.2.1.23 under Vista 32.

How I made it?
Because I didn't know what was causing issue, I decided to remove all Nokia's components from my PC. I used Revo Uninstaller 1.90 (freeware) for that. First in Revo's search box I typed word "Nokia" to see just Nokia's applications/drivers. Then I uninstall them one by one in Advanced mode (to delete all files and registry entries). After that I rebooted my PC and installed OVI Suite (requires another reboot to complete installation). Now OVI Suite is showing all my messages. :D

EDIT: Also messaging is working in PC Suite 7.1.51.0

Re: Ovi suite now compatible with n900

Just updated Ovi Suite to the new version 3.0.0.284 - as it is available via the inbuilt software updater I am assuming this is no longer a Beta.

I now appear to have full compatibility with my N900, including messaging and music support. V. Happy...... at last! :-)

Re: Ovi suite now compatible with n900

Hi Friends,

I happened to re-format my whole computer as I was doing some kind of multi-boot setup (I installed Windows XP, 7, and some Linux distros). In both Windows XP and Windows 7, first thing I installed was the latest Nokia Ovi Suite - version 3.0.0.284. Turns out to be fully working with my N900...everything working like a charm! :)

Re: Ovi suite now compatible with n900

Sigh. Still no Ovi Suite Linux support....

Down-right pitiful that an 'open' phone requires a proprietary Windows application to manage it..

EDIT: Yea, you're right. I'm an idiot.

I've never "needed" Ovi Suite for anything. At all. I never used it. There's nothing that it can do that on-device applications can't do. There's some things it can make easier, but it's sure as hell not necessary.

- In other news -

Now, how many of you actually stopped and said "hey, maybe this BS most of us keep spewing about Nokia no-longer-supporting-the-N900, never-giving-updates-to-the-N900, etc, etc, is actually not true"?

Nope. The new argument will be how this should have been in place during the launch and not at the end of the life.

Troll 101 - still make a positive into a negative at all costs.

I use the USB tethering in Ovi Suite on windows all the time. It's a dead-simple way to tether the device. Since Ovi is not on Linux, is there a dead-simple alternative to using Ovi for usb tethering?

On Ubuntu it is. Plug in USB cable, select PC mode and in Network Manager select your provider.

Mad Developer? No?

Isn't the great thing about Linux the fact that you can do this stuff at the system level in like five seconds if you know the shell commands necessary?

rmmod g_file_storage
insmod g_ether (Nokia removed this from the later firmwares; it's in power kernel, or you can get it by installing Mad Developer).
ifconfig usb0 ...

...so on. (I don't use linux on my laptop or home machine; I am not going to bother looking up the commands for you. So those above aren't actual literal enter-this-in-X-term things - but they're along the lines of what stuff should be done, in approximately what order. I am very confident that this has been explained in USB Networking wiki entries on this site, however.)

It literally takes me 2 seconds to plug in my N900, select 'pc mode' and click 'connect' in Ovi Suite in windows to tether it over usb. It's so ridiculously easy and fast that I can do it quickly if I'm on the road and have to look up something for work while a client is waiting for me. The last thing I would want to do is muck around with the linux commandline when a customer is waiting. That's just embarrassing.

*Cough* Shell-script *cough* Once you know what to do, writing it into a file and then running that every time is a lot faster. And I don't use my Debian virtual machine that much, but I'm pretty sure you can have a shell script as an icon on your desktop or something.
