Once you learn to type complete words, I'll take a stab at it.

Edit: Although I do give you credit for using a semi-relevant title instead of the ubiquitous "help plzzz"

Re: txt message..

That was painful to read!

There is no 160 char limit, this is a forum! Please write proper words, using those proper words, please construct proper sentences.

This will make it much easier for others to help you.

Please bear in mind that English is not the native language for alot of user here, 1337 speak makes it very difficult for these people to read, and therefore makes it very hard to give advice to your post

I think the conversations widget was proven to be buggy... can't really say b/c I don't use it myself. Try removing that and rebooting maybe?

Top tip:
We all know what it's like to need an answer to a tech problem in a hurry.

However: asking for help, then asking again and again every 10 minutes will not make people help you faster. If anything, it will make people less likely to help you. It should be obvious why this is the case.

The more able a person is to help you, the stronger this effect will be. Search TMO and the wiki, and then if you still need help, take your time to ask a decent question and be patient. If your question is halfway valid and comprehensible, people will do their best to help you.

This should be your next step. The info provided by this command should help James_Littler (or maybe someone else) understand why your phone is acting in the way you describe.

To reboot your phone: switch it off, then switch it on again. That's all that means.

To run a command in the terminal: go to the application menu, find the 'X Terminal' app, launch it, and then type in exactly what James_Littler asked. It is a diagnostic test and he needs to see what it outputs in order to help you.

Finally: try a google search for things you don't understand before just blindly asking. If you aren't willing to do even basic research, why should someone else do all the work for you for free? TMO likes to help, but like any strong internet community, it helps those who help themselves.

I'm quite aware that I sound very unhelpful and perhaps even arrogant, but why did you buy the N900? Reason I ask is you have made a decision to purchase (or was it gifted?) a device that you very unfamiliar with. Even the most novice user knows what the x-terminal is.

Not angry. It's more... *sigh*

We do want to help you (really! :)), but for best results and quickest help, please read and understand my previous post.

The error you posted means that you didn't type the command exactly (and I do mean exactly) character for character. There was a syntax error. Try again. If you really have trouble, take a picture of your screen (showing X Terminal with the command you typed and the error message) and post it to this thread and we can help you understand where the error is, but please try to get the command right on your own first.

When I came to TMO, I was already a 'tech guy', but I didn't know much about Maemo at all. Learning is good for everyone, and I'm sure you can learn lots of useful stuff too if you have some patience and are willing to think and read. Again: we will help you where we can.

Sorry for not responding sooner, I was attempting to have some lunch.

The error that threw up indicates that you did it wrong.

Code:

ls -l /home/user/.rtcom-eventlogger
LS (space) -L (space) /home/........

Type it again making sure you input the spaces correctly, they make a huge difference.

If you cant figure it out, either highlight the text so you can see where the spaces fall, or simply copy and paste it.

In terminal if you press the title bar it'll give you a paste option.

Out of interest what firmware version are you running (menu -> settings -> about product. Version: ?) as this was a problem seen quite often with PR1.2, I've not seen it on PR1.3 yet, maybe it's just not been out long enough.

Both of these are lower-case L, not a number 1... try again please :)
Code:

ls -l

Heh. Well done for sticking with it - this is what James_Littler was asking for.

Looking a bit further back in this thread:

I agree: this isn't helpful at all. When I was given my first computer I had no idea how to use it, but I now make a comfortable living working in the IT industry.

The problem is not that OP doesn't know how to use the N900, but rather a lack of experience asking good technical questions. In any case, either skill can be learned.

Now we just need to see what James_Littler can learn from the output of the command (aren't these just a bunch of sqlite databases?)

James_Littler 2010-11-17 16:06

Re: txt message..

Looks like your database has been corrupted somehow.

Try the following.

1. Install rootsh
2. open terminal
3. type
Code:

root
4. type
Code:

cp /home/user/.rtcom-eventlogger/el-v1.db-journal /home/user/.rtcom-eventlogger/el-v1.db-journal.orig
5. type
Code:

cp /home/user/.rtcom-eventlogger/el-v1.db /home/user/.rtcom-eventlogger/el-v1.db.orig
6. type
Code:

rm /home/user/.rtcom-eventlogger/el-v1.db-journal
7. type
Code:

rm /home/user/.rtcom-eventlogger/el-v1.db
8. Reboot

Once your phone is up and running, open conversations, this will take a long time to load, once it's loaded, you may see some old messages. If you cant, try sending a message and then see if it appears in conversations.

How should he see his (old) messages, when you
told him to delete the conversations db?

It should use the backup/before-restore.db, shouldn't it?

If that's not present/empty then yes there will be no conversations visible, which is why I said try sending one and see if it appears in conversations.

If this is wrong, please let me know as I'm still learning and don't claim to be a maemo guru.

Probably not, often downloading films or large files with transmission can cause problems on the vfat partition, but I cant think what would cause this.
If it happens again, at least you know what to do.
