Do you have a GUI application manager running in the background? The factory shipped one or FastApplicationManager?

apt-get requires root user privileges.

And just what does this do? Can it hurt existing installed apps?

anandv76 2010-11-19 17:07

Re: How can I increase the memory to install applications?

autoclean: removes all stored archives in your cache for packages that can not be downloaded anymore

autoremove: packages that are installed as dependency of an already uninstalled package and removes them. This is used to clean up unused dependencies that remain on your system.

Re: How can I increase the memory to install applications?

not an expert but i dont think that is possible without repartitioning the filesystem. but that is fraught with risk...
http://wiki.maemo.org/N900_filesystem

i believe there is sufficient memory to install as many "useful" apps as you may practically want...

Re: How can I increase the memory to install applications?

Read my post from 2nd to the last page... That's the most noob friendly tutorial no need for linux commands etc. And yes no other options need to reflash it.
On pr1.1 there's an option where you don't need to reflash but it's not working anymore.

Re: How can I increase the memory to install applications?

Yes, because currently I do not quite understand what memory your are short of. Maybe root fs is too full to load deb-files?

Radicalz38 2010-11-19 19:17

Re: How can I increase the memory to install applications?

yes since you need to flash the EMMC directly.. But uhm I think you could still back it up?

Re: How can I increase the memory to install applications?

Operation failed ..... (what?)
What is the full error message?

If you do:
df -h / ; du -sh /var/cache/apt/archives
...and put the full given output here, we may know the problem is that your rootfs is just too full to receive big deb-package. (Then it will help to soft link archives directory momentarily to /home/user/MyDocs/archives

Re: How can I increase the memory to install applications?

just hexedit the emmc image (i have mine at 5gb) and reflash - to me it is hte most simple and least dangerous. Just spend an evening backing up and restoring and rebackup your stuff.

You only have to do it once after all.

He is installing bigsized games on his n900. So the 2GB home partition is filling up and becoming full since it's just 2GB. Transferring those games on a vfat partition would render it useless since you need execute permissions to play it which means it needs to be on a ext3 filesystem which is limited to 2GB.

You CAN actually enable those execute permissions though it's considered a 'security risk'.
