Re: Moderators Poll

I Votes yes I am tired of seen such a good open source community go down by the big flame wars we have here.

Ill be more than glad to help out and be more involve with the community.

I voted "yes". Maybe then the snide remarks would stop and then things wouldn't have to escalate.

Re: Moderators Poll

No, thanks. I prefer those who are capable of acting like adults to do so on their own and, when they fail, to amuse me by insulting each other.

So, to revise the ancient Greeks for modern geeks: no things in moderation. ;-)

Re: Moderators Poll

I only want the spam postings to be moderated away, the rest I don't worry about. Seen it worse elsewhere.

Edit: I should add that moderators are used successfully on forums like e.g. Brighthand, where they mostly don't "moderate" people's postings but simply are there to move postings to the correct place, merge duplicate threads, helping with making posts 'sticky' and so on.

Re: Moderators Poll

We all should moderate our own dang selves...

No magical numbers of moderators can prevent childish and inappropriate posts...

If a post or poster bothers you it should be reported to Reggie using the tools already provided...
I bet not many people know they exist.
In the upper right hand corner of every post (next to the threads post number) is an exclamation icon. Click on that sucker to report the post.

Quote:

Note: This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts
I think if more people read the rules and familiarized themselves with the place before they go a posting, there would be less garbage posted.

For those who can't be bothered with trivial things like reading rules and such, a moderator from another forum has prepared the following flash video.

Re: Moderators Poll

I agree with Ta-t3, just naming some people as spam control would be enough for me. As far as the rest, opinions are like aholes, and everyone has one, and most people are one, at least once and a while. Some perhaps myself included are more often than others, but what are you going to do. I think deep passionate debates about nothing are great, sometimes people just need to get some thicker skin, and if you post stupid comments, be prepared to deal with people telling you they are stupid...no harm no foul

Re: Moderators Poll

I agree and disagree with you guys... I agree I am one of those who just ignore stupid post and flamers... I disagree because is so constant now that is giving the place a bad name... there is no control... I know people in Houston who own N800's and they stay away from this forum due to the flame wars...
Just my 2 cents...

Re: Moderators Poll

Personally I like to have sarcastic fun with the flamers and other malcontents, especially when they tickle my irony bone. And if they get too out of hand they go into the Ignore bin. But certainly some moderation could help... sometimes even decent people get out of line and need to be prodded a bit to keep from making fools of themselves. Plus culling the spam more often would be nice.

Re: Moderators Poll

I'm not one for heavy handed rules but when sometimes you have to create a culture by enforcing some simple rules. A few more moderators would help make sure this happens. Banning some users would simply benefit this forum and make it better. I say create a sub-forum called "teh kiddies can insult each other in herezzz" which is completely unmoderated and then heavily mod the rest of the forums in order to maintain a high quality level.

Re: Moderators Poll

I am thinking of activating infractions soon. Infractions are measured by points spanning across time. A member can incur infraction points based on a post he/she makes. Points vary by the weight of the grievance. If a member reaches a certain number of points, he can be banned for a week, a month, a year, or forever.

Points expire however. Each infraction will last for a month. An infraction having a weight of say 10 points issued today will get erased by next month. As long as points haven't expired, points can accumulate and become the basis of length of the ban.

Members who receive infractions will get a PM stating the reason of the infraction.

What do you all think?

But who will moderate the moderators ?

Re: Moderators Poll

I've seen the infraction point system work fairly well at another forum. They have a "ban bin" where troublemakers go to chill while they're given another chance if they receive too many.

Totally fair. No point in banning Texrat & Milhouse for life cuz they have posted a few helpful posts in the past.

as long as the moderators are fair and unbiased and completely not power-hungry.

Crap. You lost me at "not power-hungry". :p

Re: Moderators Poll

I voted no, but of course spam should be eliminated as quickly as possible. So I would say moderators no, eradicators yes.

Re: Moderators Poll

I voted no. this place is tame and comical when anything erupts, compared to some of the things that happen on other lists. it's not like Dawes, Torvalds or De Raadt are regulars.

Re: Moderators Poll

Just reading one of the posts in this topic (ahem, post #16) made me want to vote yes -- if only for some control to be exercised when it needs to be. And Reggie, the system you proposed sounds perfect for the needs of ITT. In fact, I think it might be more productive than adding mods. OTOH, spam _is_ an issue.

And yeah, well opinions may be like a'holes, but flame wars erupting over the silliest and most trivial of issues are unneccessary. Not to mention that they give ITT bad publicity, which we can all agree is bad. My 2c.

Re: Moderators Poll

All bs aside, regarding a certain troublemaker here with 3 or 4 accounts:

I have the guy on ignore, but I don't like what he does to the forum (I see the quotes). To that extent, I'd have banned him (and his alter egos) long ago-- and I'm not a ban-happy type (I have been a forum admin and moderator). I have tons of tolerance for all sorts of activities, but zero for people who do nothing but relentlessly harass forum members. There is nothing productive in that behavior, and it poisons an environment. Just my opinion.
