Files keep reappearing on sd card

Whenever i delete files from my 2gig sd card it keep reappear, I have even tried formatting the card but the file are still there. I have even tried adding file to the card after deleting the original files but to no luck since when i check the card the original files come back and the new ones are deleted.

The card was give to me by someone who had it in his phone before but told me that he formatted it before.

I have noticed that there is a hidden system file on the card which i assume is what causing the problem.

So can anybody tell me what else can i do to delete the files or is it that the card is corrupt?

Re: Files keep reappearing on sd card

no system file can survive a format. So it's probably from your device... btw what file is it? DCIM? .modest folders?

Re: Files keep reappearing on sd card

there are three folders My_Images (empty), My_Music (empty) My_Videos ( 3 videos) and a card.sys file

Re: Files keep reappearing on sd card

these folders are created automatically by the phone , after it mounts a partition on the sdcard .

Re: Files keep reappearing on sd card

You can't... The phone itself autogenerates it.

So basically the card is not good anymore then

Formatting the card to ext2 worked for me. Your mileage may vary.

Re: Files keep reappearing on sd card

I think disabling the tracker from scanning , watching and indexing removable media will stop these folders from being recreated , the tracker is responsible for scanning your media for images , sound files and videos so that they show up at the media player and photo application . to disable the tracker download tracker-cfg from extras-devel and disable scanning ,watching, and indexing of removable media

So, you think the card is not good anymore just because some empty directories are created on it?

If that's really what you think, please send me all of your cards that are "not good" anymore, I'm sure I could find some use for them.
:D

Actually if the directories were empty it would not be so bad. but there is actually no space available on the card

Re: Files keep reappearing on sd card

try disabling the tracker before going to format your card .

please note that you will not be able to use your sdcard in windows , if you format it as ext2 .

if you use linux then nothing to worry about , easiest way to format your sdcard is using gparted .

Just a word of advice... If your always/often/sometimes/rarely go face to face with windows think twice on converting it to ext3 :)
If your linux then go ahead. There's a reason why portable storage uses fat32.

Re: Files keep reappearing on sd card

Wow this is more complicated than I thought especially since I am a newbie to linux.

If you formatted the card (standard FAT32) and re-inserted it to the N900, all the devices does is create the empty directories. So what is filling up the card?

Can you (with the card in question inteserted into the N900) open an X terminal and type the following:

du -h /media/mmc1

And paste the results back here so we can identify what is filling up your card.

I never get those folders.
Did you use the mass storage mode with windows?

I get the following

usage: du [-aHLdclsxhmk] [FILE]...

Hmmm.... I guess the version of du on the N900 doesn't like the human readable flag.

Can you try this:

cd /media/mmc1

Then type:

du .

(don't forget the space and period after the letters du)

here

32 ./My_Images
32 ./My_Music
1883680 ./My_Videos

This is showing 1.8 MB of space used in the SD card's Videos folder and 1.9 MB used in the card's top level. This can't come close to filling up your card unless it's only got a primary partition of like 5 MB of formatted FAT32 space.

Type this to so us the formatted usage percentage:

cd /media/mmc1

then type:

df -h .

and paste the results here.

So, just so I know that we're reading this correctly: Is this a 2GB MicroSD card?

And you just formatted it FAT32 before you put it into your N900, right?

Can we see a long listing of the contents?

Type:
cd /media/mmc1

Then type:
ls -al

I smell bad sectors here.... try typing this.... as root
"umount /home/user/MyDocs"
"mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/mmcblk1 "

Then
"reboot"
