I NEED HELP please ( am willing to pay )
i just bought my n900 brand new in box last weekend. after i fired it up and enterd my pin number i wanted to install rootsh ( every forum says its the first thing to do ) so while installing rootsh i get an error : not enough installation memory in application to install aplication . and how could that be with a brand new device ? after a bit of reading everyone says its the root memory thats full so i tried to flash it but just get an %m message i googled it but there is no explanation for the %m message or the not having root on a new device . so if anyone please can help i am willing to pay because it feels like nokia jammed 450 euros up my a**

Re: I NEED HELP please ( am willing to pay )
Hi, welcome to the forum.
Which OS are you using on the PC you will be flashing the phone from? Have you had a read of the Wiki? It's here: http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware That should tell you everything on flashing. Any problem or if you get stuck just post back. |

What version of Maemo do you use? PR 1.2 or PR 1.3 ? |
Re: I NEED HELP please ( am willing to pay )
If you truly bought a new unopened device, I wouldnt even bother troubleshooting. Just return it and get a new one under warranty.

Re: I NEED HELP please ( am willing to pay )
second that thought.. if its a week old take it back to where you bought it and give em hell...

- You buy device A from Company B - You read internets and find out that there is this wonderful app that is for people who like to spend their time in x terminal and run apps from there which need root priviledges. --After seeing where you struggle Iīm not sure if x terminal is for you pal. You could get your N900 really messed up from there. - Moreover app that you are trying to install is not from Nokia. Iīm not sure that if you are aware of this, but you are able to really make your N900 not to boot by installing some apps. And thatīs is not Nokias fault. Actually you get warning on default app manager when you install stuff outside of Nokias own app "store"/repository. Itīs not there just for fun. What in the name of god makes you think that Nokia is responsible here. So letīs try to go on from here - First check what version of OS you have. You can find your version from settings->about. - Start x terminal and run command df -h and copy paste output here .edit So you have done this and it shows that you are using only 57% of space? -And about that %m error. Well what I think that you have done is that you have not understood wiki.maemo.org flash guide. Probably you have either copied image to wrong directory (should be same with flasher) or you are making typos (remember to use TABulator when giving filenames to flasher). And please remember that this place is not Nokia support channel. Just mixed group of people trying to do weird kind of stuff with this device. .edit Any apps at all. Not even from Nokias own store? Then return it or flash it completely with emmc+rootfs images. Guides can be found from http://wiki.maemo.org |

Re: I NEED HELP please ( am willing to pay )
i am using windows xp professional and pr 1.3 and i did not install any app after i couldnt install rootsh ( wich i just wanted to increase my root partition not to mod it or somethin ) i tried installing a theme but still the same message. i am aware of the hazards when going root and installing non nokia software ( thats why i didnt do that ) ,and i saved the files in maemo/flasher-3.5 and did not make typos because i renamed the files so it couldnt be. i also know this is not a nokia helpdesk but since the people in the helpdesk and in the store dont even know how a n900 looks like i thought i could give it a shot here finall i read the threads on flashing the device i followed every stepp paying close attention and not making any typing errors but still get the message. AND the n900 is my primary device ( brand new ) and i don't want to send it back already after owning it for like 4 days

du -k | sort -nr | more It list directories starting from biggest one. Probably gives some errors that you are not root user but at least should give you some hints about biggest dirs in your system. Could take awhile to execute. .edit Ant that flash guide is here: http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware |
Re: I NEED HELP please ( am willing to pay )
if i were you i would go to nokia ana pay them not the members of the forum, i think you are not doing the right flashing and its new device don't try or play in anything in it, let nokia do that and who knows maybe you still in warranty

Re: I NEED HELP please ( am willing to pay )
oke i tried to run du -k and it give me a big list of mydocs/cities and thats it when i scroll up its the same the only diffrence is the size bit nothing more than 2 digits i tried flashing again and still %m error message. i changed the firmware name to henk and then typed flasher-3.5.exe -F henk -f and i tried it with a -R at the and but that also didnt work and i changed the file to .bin and tried that but it also doesnt work ? thanks for the quick replies (Y)

Re: I NEED HELP please ( am willing to pay )
For a start, how about not screwing with file names, you're just asking for trouble and no one will have any idea what your going on about.
Follow the Wiki EXACTLY! How hard is that?! |
Re: I NEED HELP please ( am willing to pay )
Without rootsh this is unsolvable, you need to copy /var/apt/cache to /home/cache and link it back but you will need root privileges.
whats the output of?: Code:
sudo apt-get install rootsh |

Re: I NEED HELP please ( am willing to pay )
Well with the device filled to capacity, and you do not want to contact customer care for what reason ever, i think, your best shot is to get rid of some installed applications through application manager.
It also cleans the cache. Then again try to get rootsh installed to really start setting things straight. |
Re: I NEED HELP please ( am willing to pay )
start app manager
disable all repositories reboot start app manager remove games and apps what you havde installed enable only extras repository try to install rootsh you said that /opt is full so i thought that you could find biggest dirs with du command (please remember to run command from main dir). mydocs/cities is nokia maps IIRC have you installed whole world to your phone? |
Re: I NEED HELP please ( am willing to pay )
This does not sound like a brand new device if opt is 97% full when you have not installed any apps yet.
Either that or we have not been told of everything that was done since the purchase. Option 1: Take it back and get a replacement if it was supposed to be new. Option 2: Re-flash everything including your eMMC. (total reflash) |
Re: I NEED HELP please ( am willing to pay )
i disabled all the repositories and rebooted but i couldnt un install any apps because the only ones left are the libqtm- module's and i don't thinks i should un install them :P and still not enough room in application memory to install application i tried sudo apt-get install rootsh but it asks for a password but i cant enter one and as far as i know i don't have the whole world installed i used it to nav mysel to work :P and i did not install anything i lend it to my girl but as far as i could see she did not install anything so anyone knows how i could clear some space in /home/opt without root ?

Re: I NEED HELP please ( am willing to pay )
thanks for the help so far (Y) really apreciate it
|
Re: I NEED HELP please ( am willing to pay )
Clear your device & also reset to factory.
You will find that in Settings>Then click on top till you get the drop down menu. Good Luck. |
Re: I NEED HELP please ( am willing to pay )
I think your best bet is just to reflash and start again. You've got something dodgey going on.

Re: I NEED HELP please ( am willing to pay )
@edgar: Thanks, truly regret and apologize if I was going too hard on you moderators. And obviously you do read the threads. I got a little irritated that peoples patience in here is tested with a lot of mindless threads causing noise, it seems like many create a thread first and then think afterwards.
I am going to help you out next time, using that report link instead. @chubi: As for trying to be helpful, I'll do this once: If you indeed have bought a completely new device, it is more than obvious it shouldn't behave like that. There should be plenty of room for you to install rootsh providing you did that right (even though it's difficult to do wrong). I don't know why you don't see this but, either you have received an already used device in your box sold as new, or it is broken somehow. You should return it to the reseller or wherever you bought it. It's as simple as that. |
