[Announce] Status menu in portrait mode

http://i54.tinypic.com/o5niub.jpg

This one's a quicky, sort of :P

This allows you to get the status menu showing in portrait mode, you need to replace two packages, hildon-desktop (it blocks the status menu in portrait mode by default), and hildon-status-menu, so it can auto rotate.

Code:

root
wget http://mohammadag.xceleo.org/public/maemo/debfiles/portrait/hildon-status-menu/hildon-desktop_2.2.140-1+0m5_armel.deb
dpkg -i hildon-desktop_2.2.140-1+0m5_armel.deb
wget http://mohammadag.xceleo.org/public/maemo/debfiles/portrait/hildon-status-menu/hildon-status-menu_0.3.39+0m5_armel.deb
dpkg -i hildon-status-menu_0.3.39+0m5_armel.deb
# you can either reboot or do these commands, a reboot is recommended
killall hildon-desktop
killall hildon-status-menu

hildon-desktop is based on Matan's mhd, sources in same directory as deb files.

Re: [Announce] Status menu in portrait mode

Will this be integrated permanently to Matan's modified Hildon desktop package, so one can get automatic upgrades once installed?

Re: [Announce] Status menu in portrait mode

Awesome! This isn't working with the single column package i guess?

MohammadAG 2010-12-05 16:13

Re: [Announce] Status menu in portrait mode

This is already based on his package.

Yes, but automatic upgrades from repositories for this version of modifield-hildon-desktop would be nice, like kernel-power -package which is kept up.
You could call it hildon-desktop-power or hildon-desktop-mmm or something. (mmm = Modified by Matan and MohammadAG)

MohammadAG 2010-12-05 16:22

Re: [Announce] Status menu in portrait mode

Might look into gconf and merge all packages into one configurable package, would be really nice if Matan could help here since he seems to know a lot about it.

The SSU was set up properly, but HAM keeps ignoring packages in it and I might as well just remove Nokia's repositories from the trusted list to get the SSU going, because that's the only thing that's preventing me from releasing it.

Nice. Only problem I have had is that 3G/2G/Dual Mode Selection Applet doesn't fill the bigger cell properly.

mohammad please could you make one for conversations also? :(

MohammadAG 2010-12-05 17:28

Re: [Announce] Status menu in portrait mode

3G/2G applet needs a minor modification to make it use layouts properly, not related to this, only triggered by it ;)

Conversations is closed source, sorry!

Does this status menu include the extra line allowing you to see 6 lines before having to scroll?

Re: [Announce] Status menu in portrait mode

@MohammadAG, thank you for this application. I followed you instruction but strange enough the status menu is still landscape. Morever, the contacts which typically turn to portat it stays landscape and does not turn portrait anymore.
Thanks for your help

I've also got this, reboot the phone after installing :)

Re: [Announce] Status menu in portrait mode

I did reboot, the problem is still the same

MohammadAG 2010-12-05 19:13

Re: [Announce] Status menu in portrait mode

Sometimes hildon-desktop doesn't restart properly, sometimes it does, it's pretty random, which is why I said either killall or reboot.

If anyone's wondering, post #17 is the same package but with 6 lines in landscape mode.

Re: [Announce] Status menu in portrait mode

MohammadAG: Did I ever tell you how much I love you? (Now I just have to get myself to set up scratchbox and start doing actually useful things instead of mooching off people like you. Like make as many of the status menu applets as possible to not yank you out of portrait mode. I'll do my best to figure that out in the next few days, but knowing this community, the non-newbs will figure it out way before I can.)

same issue, status menu not rotate even after reboot, i have many application in status menu, ssh status, 3g2g ModeSelection, ProfileX, WiFi switcher, signal applet, and other

MohammadAG 2010-12-05 21:06

Re: [Announce] Status menu in portrait mode

The status menu won't rotate to portrait if the window behind it doesn't support portrait mode, open something that has portrait mode support like the phone app (assuming it's not locked to landscape)

Megaltariak 2010-12-05 21:14

Re: [Announce] Status menu in portrait mode

The statusbar menu is now almost perfect for me, there is still a bit of space lost in portrait mode, it is possible to make a status bar like the one in post #17 but with to also 2 supplementary lines in portrait mode ? :)

yes it work with phone application, i think can work also on simply desktop without no application open, but no

avim 2010-12-05 21:28

Re: [Announce] Status menu in portrait mode

After installing, the status menu does not go portrait and all other application I need to apply ctrl+shift+r to make that specific application goes portrait. The problem is that it contacts for example goes portrait only once and then I need to apply ctrl+shift+r once more, etc. The applications seems now "memory less" for rotation.

Re: [Announce] Status menu in portrait mode

arf, doesn't work here, I tried with phone application saved in portrait mode or automatic, also with instinctiv and others
for the moment, just a black square begins to appear and stops immediately all in one seconde, nothing else :(

Re: [Announce] Status menu in portrait mode

Running apt-get upgrade would reinstall the original debs. Example:
Code:

apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be upgraded:
  hildon-desktop hildon-status-menu
2 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

To avoid that, do the following:
Code:

echo "Package: hildon-desktop
Pin: release a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 1001

Package: hildon-status-menu
Pin: release a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 1001" >> /etc/apt/preferences

Ciao!

Re: [Announce] Status menu in portrait mode

Nice! Looks good. Nifty for the flash light button.

Mentalist Traceur 2010-12-05 23:48

Re: [Announce] Status menu in portrait mode

Very much agreed with the flashlight thing. It's already possible, combined with the cl-launcher, to launch flashlight from portrait. But now it also makes shutting it off from portrait that much easier. In fact, just... This makes the phone yet another significant step to realistically being capable of universally supporting portrait mode. All we need is a good universal portrait keyboard (the one w00t ported and eternal was working on for a bit were promising, but didn't get anywhere), and someone really enterprising to undertake the task of creating a significantly modified hildon desktop with portrait mode at the home screen level and task switcher level, and we'd be set. Frak, even without the home screen and task switcher being portraitable, if just about everything else is, in practice, it becomes essentially equally usable.
