[DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Qt based tabbed web browser with mouse support
So... As I already promised here http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...7&postcount=28 source code of qtmweb is in the garage.
Here it is how UI looks like for now http://talk.maemo.org/attachment.php...1&d=1290871439 Garage page is https://garage.maemo.org/projects/qtmweb/. I want to ask developers here to contribute to project, so at the end we to have web browser with FULL desktop behavior on n900. There are several things to be done, most of them are under "Tasks" on garage page. For now tabs work, flash works (in fullscreen too) , there is some file download working too. qtmweb could be compiled either in QT Creator or in scratchbox. QTCreator was used for development so far. You need to have svn to checkout the project And... I don't know how project management works in garage, so any help on that matter will be appreciated |
Re: [DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Qt based tabbed web browser with mouse support
Or *shameless advertising*, submit patches for http://gitorious.org/qtbrowser/qtbrowser :P
|
Re: [DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Qt based tabbed web browser with mouse support
Sorry, did not get that. I would recommend you to first check what I have submit before making "shameless advertising" . It is not a clone of example browser coming with Qt ;) Anyway, I will look at your code, it is sad there to be 2 parallel browser projects

Re: [DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Qt based tabbed web browser with mouse support
Calling it a clone of an example browser would be a clear statement showing you didn't look at the code, I've just dug it up (left it for a month).

Re: [DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Qt based tabbed web browser with mouse support
Yeah , my fault, not qt examples clone, only the name :p . Just downloaded source code - definitely you should look at qtmweb, it is several months ahead (according to me of course :D ). And your looks like touch optimised, while mine is definitely written with mouse and keyboard in head.

Too bad I dont know much about C++ :( |
Re: [DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Qt based tabbed web browser with mouse support
What's the point? Fennec with Phony addon behaves exactly like a fully desktop browser , Mozilla dev team are just tweaking it to make faster
|
Re: [DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Qt based tabbed web browser with mouse support
The issue with fennec isn't speed, but memory footprint. Once it is loaded, there is little room for anything else, leading to swapping, leading to performance loss overall.
Your mileage may vary, it depends on usage scenarios. |

Re: [DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Qt based tabbed web browser with mouse support
Wow! I didn't know about either of these browsers being in development. Thank you BOTH for your browser developments and contributions to the N900.
When you say flash works, you mean the same flash 9.xxx that comes with every N900 or something else? |
Re: [DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Qt based tabbed web browser with mouse support
@all - guys, I am not asking for advices nor ideas here. What I need is DEVELOPERS to help me continue work on this project. When (and if) it is ready for masses there will be announce thread where you can request features, say how stupid is the idea of writing another browser, etc. Please all of you, if you have no intention to join development do not comment here, just start another thread on your own or use some other for this purpose.
Thanks |
Re: [DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Qt based tabbed web browser with mouse support
Developers have a finite amount of time, and therefore will want to commit time to a project is likely to succeed in order to not waste that time.
Any project needs an audience. People are questioning the value of the project at its inception as compared to existing projects and existing applications. Rather than providing a value proposition, you are shutting down discussion that could lead to interest from potential developers. Good luck. I hope you are successful and look forward to your announce. No need to reply to this message as thread rules you have just created would disallow me from replying in turn, which would be inequitable. |
Re: [DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Qt based tabbed web browser with mouse support
fennec fast? What have you people been eating? Last time, yesterday when nightly was updated, I clocked different page loading times and rendering speed against Opera and opera is still quite a lot faster than fennec. Opera just loads pages on my N900 faster and is even responsive while itīs loading pages.
But to OP it's always nice to see new experiments to be done! |
Re: [DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Qt based tabbed web browser with mouse support
just bumping the thread

On top of that theres no need to disregard the need for alternate browsers, for example, I hate the menu bar at the bottom of Microb, I want it smaller. The ability to have tabs for example, I dont like having 12 windows open. I hope this gets the Development it deserves. |
Re: [DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Qt based tabbed web browser with mouse support
Wish this were touch friendly. Would love a Qt browser, Qts the only thing that runs good in Maemo.

Re: [DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Qt based tabbed web browser with mouse support
@freemangordon
Hi! I made a Qt web browser some time ago. It's almost complete, but it was just a sort of big exercise to learn Qt, so it's not absolutely bugs/errors free and needs many many optimizations...and it was made by a beginner, so code is not so beautiful :) It's touchscreen optimised, so maybe it's not what you are looking for, but it could be a good starting point. I'll be honest: I don't have much free time (unfortunately, I am not rich and I have to work T T ), and I'm not an advanced Qt developer, but if you want I can try to help you. Some infos about my work:
I would like to rewrite it using Qt 4.7/QML, someday... |

Great. Will wait your feedback/comments. And hopefully more people will join meanwhile.

Re: [DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Qt based tabbed web browser with mouse support
I quickly watched your code, and in many parts it's very similar to mine, so it should not be a problem for me to give you a hand.

Re: [DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Qt based tabbed web browser with mouse support
now you have your co-developer, dont forget the 'open tab in background' its missing in firefox and opera

Re: [DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Qt based tabbed web browser with mouse support
I'm bumping this thread for justice; the N900 would greatly benefit from having a better implementation of the, so far, only browser capable of handling tabbed browsing, full mouse support and flash.
Any devs out there willing to help? This would be a great boost for the community, I assume. Btw, this post is being writtten In QtMWeb; even in its rather alpha stagbe, it is far more usable, with a keyboard and a mouse, than microB, due to the mouse support. |
