Simple N800 hack...
This "hack" is so simple, surely someone else has already done it...
I finally took care of something today that's been bugging me ever since I've had my N800 - the blocked USB port behind the kickstand. I have never once used the stand, but was reluctant to remove it because of the unfinished appearance. Well, I have been using the Boxwave Silicone case for the last month or so, and I love it, but it really makes the stand useless. So I used a tiny screwdriver, took off the two screws holding the stand, and then used a simple hole punch to create a hole where the USB port lines up in the case. Now I can transfer files to the N800 via USB while in the Boxwave case, plus the smoky grey color of the case covers everything nicely. I can take a pic if someone really needs it, but the hole looks just like the ones for the audio jack and power port. |

Re: Simple N800 hack...
That's more of a mod than a hack. A hack would be if you added a full sized usb port with power. :D

Re: Simple N800 hack...
Same here. I even use the stand while holding the n800 in the hand.

Re: Simple N800 hack...
I probably would have modded the case to be able to use the stand.

Re: Simple N800 hack...
I rarely use the stand, and I never use the USB port.
I transfer files to the N800 via "scp". Takes a few seconds longer, but needs no tinkering with cables and such. |
Re: Simple N800 hack...
Gee, I could've sold one of these guys my original N800, instead of waiting almost 3 months for Nokia to not fix my broken kickstand... ;-)

Re: Simple N800 hack...
My eyes aren't very good anymore, but it looks like on my n800 the kickstand is riveted on, least I can't see any + slot for even a tiny screwdriver.
I also have a silicone case (keeps it from slipping to floor) but I wished I could mod it to use the case by removing stand and rescrewing thru silicone case. |

To those wondering, it is held on with Torx screws...much smaller than the T-4 size I had. I just used a tiny jeweler's flathead and wedged it in between two of the points and it worked fine. I must be one of the only weirdos that doesn't use the stand. Oh well, to each his/her own, eh? Now we can see if anyone can mod the case to fit the stand on the outside...more than likely possible, the stand just won't fold completely flat. |

Why didn't I think of Flickr? You can see how often I upload photos...
Here are two pics...one with a USB cable connected, one without. http://www.flickr.com/photos/8752329@N06/ |
Re: Simple N800 hack...
OK, I'm in. I use a Strongman case for my N800 and I think it would be better without the stand. Does anyone know exactly what size torx driver it takes to remove the stand?

Re: Simple N800 hack...
For those making one you can use a craft blade to cut the usb hole to perfection :)

Re: Simple N800 hack...
T-5 is the number torx bit. most decent computer warehouse stores have "security" bit sets that include it and many other usefull odd shape and rare size bits.

Thank you very much!

Re: Simple N800 hack...
On a side note on pics-hosting (and as my first post after reading this grande forum for the last few hours): http://www.pandafile.com/ . I'm looking forward seeing this site myself on my n800, arriving next week. Maybe one or the other might find that handy.
greets! |
Re: Simple N800 hack...
Has anyone modded the silicon case to be able to use the stand? I would hate to lose the stands functionality. If I cut along the kickstand would it ruin the silicone case?

Re: Simple N800 hack...
I never used the usb port since I discovered that I can use the Nautilus filemanager to drag and drop files to my N800 via sftp.
