LED screen for N900

Hi everyone, just like to ask if anyone has thought about installing an led screen to the n900, abit like the iphone, but better :).

No, but I thought about installing a 3-D holographic projection screen. However, it's just a thought.

I was about to change the left speaker for a replicator. Yes mono sucks, but having an Earl Grey every now and then is priceless.

Re: LED screen for N900

Actually, if you could find a 3.5inch LED display of 800x480 resolution, and if LED and LCDs ribbons transmit data in the same way, and are powered the same way, and you can make it fit inside the phone, this is possible.

Re: LED screen for N900

Whoever starts selling better screens for the N900, if they don't get taken down by Nokia, would probably make quite a profit, even considering the relativelly low market penetration of the N900

I just installed an iPhone in my N900, it was much easier.

Now I have a dual boot system for the price of an iPhone, an N900 and a roll of tape. I'll never need another phone.

Well, since Nokia discontinued N900, why don't they release their N900 drivers? Could help the comunity on some things aroudn maybe?

I am looking for a pop-in replacement for the carl zeiss camera
but what I want is 0-lux FLIR so I can start my own
TSA groping scam like the dweebs at the airports.
(Probably sell like hotcakes to bouncers at the local discos.)

Anyone know any parts that could be hacked inplace?
That would be cool with an LED screen, yano...

Err.. iPhones dont use a LED Screen - they are all LCD (but the iphone 4 is "retina screen" which is a dodgy term that means high res).

Funny thread though.. Really not surprised at how gullible some people are.. sigh

I'll admit, I was being facetious in the last post and I apologise for that.

What I did was contact Apple (sjobs@apple.com), I explained that I was a huge fan and that OSX would work really well on the N900. They ported iOS for me and sent me out a copy in one of those cool gift boxes. It was really nice of them. It runs a little slow unless you overclock your phone though.

I'm sure they will be willing to do the same thing for you too. Just send a polite email to the above address explaining your situation.

Retina Display is a high density LCD screen which is based on IPS (in-plane switching) tecnology and it is use led backlight.

N900's LCD is a high density (less than retina but always very dense) screen based on TN (Twisted Nematic) tecnology
I don't know what type of backlight is used on N900

IPS vs TN:
  • Very Better angle of vision
  • Better contrast
  • True color 24 bit native (TN usually are 18bit and they use dithering to simulate 24 bit)

Even thought the N900 itself might not be being manufactured anymore (is it really?), lots of the components used still are, and the laws that prevented some stuff being made public are still there as well.

I thought the iphone 4 used a retanal display.

Funny, the N900's LCD doesn't seem to have any of the drawbacks normally encountered with TN panels, which typically have far worse viewing angles than the N900 has.

Oh and swapping out the LCD for an OLED would probably be harder than you'd expect, since you'd undoubtedly have to break out a soldering iron at some point.

Re: LED screen for N900

Not if it is made to be compatible with the N900, replacing the screen on the N900, from what i've heard is just a matter of unscrewing and unplugging, then doing the reverse with the new screen

Re: LED screen for N900

Question: Why would any sane person want a LED screen? :)

Re: LED screen for N900

As a person who has spent time replacing many many different mobile phone screens the drivers from one screen to another screen are pretty much the same, even the connectors are the same!

The problem would be the length/angle/shape of the flexible ribbon.

Perhaps the best candidate is the Nokia N8 or some other Nokia OLED phone.

It's very very likely that the screen will 'just work', but you just won't be able to fit it in without breaking the ribbon.

EDIT:

N8 and N900 connectors look same.

Assuming that we can replace N900 screen with N8 screen, could the fact that N8 screen is a capacitive one be a problem?

Re: LED screen for N900

Too bad N8 uses an nHD resolution (360x640). As a person who once spent 2 hours replacing an 6600 screen.

Perhaps, but we are not touching the digitizer. I don't see why that should make a difference - the screen resoltion might cause issues.

Only one way to find out - try it!

I installed my n900 inside a 28 inch plasma television.
It worked flawlessly, however holding up a 2 foot stylus gets tiring after a while.

Re: LED screen for N900

the N8 on top of all the other issues even got a lower res screen?!

Re: LED screen for N900

i found an ingenious if somewhat temporary solution to install whatever i wanted on my n900. this will work for ios4, wm7, android or installing xp on your n900. haven't tried installing an led screen but i'm sure it'll work if you follow the instructions carefully.

1. remove back cover.
2. dip back cover in liquid lsd and wait to dry.
3. replace cover.
4. think really hard about the mods you want to make whilst licking back cover.
