PORTRAIT MODE for pictures, conversations, settings, contacts and other pre installed programs

you can have portrait mode (full screen, no glitches i think) on the following apps:
-pictures
-conversations (only in the menu for which u choose which conversation you want to view, not the actual texts/ims
-settings
-contacts
-email
-app manager
-file manager
-notes (but u cant type unless you have a portrait mode keyboard)
-sketch
thats all the pre installed apps, but therell probably be a lot more 3rd party apps that work! :)

HOW TO INSTALL
1. download "shortcutd" and "proximityd" from extras-devel using ur app manager (warning: devel apps might harm ur phone so be careful with what u download!)
2. install them
3. go to settings and scroll all the way to the bottom until you get to "ShortcutD" in the extras category.
4. click on it and configure either the proximity sensor or the camera shutter to trigger the action "Ctrl-shift-r (Enable rotation)
5. try it out and see what you think! :D

Re: PORTRAIT MODE (FULLY WORKING) for pictures, conversations, settings, contacts and other pre installed programs

Before you get mob of noobs who are kind enough to maybe only hang you, I would like to add that "fully working" is bit overstatement.

Those default apps were desing to be used in landscape (actually whole OS from ground to top) so do not be suprised if some of buttons or not all menus do not work as expected.

Your excitement is appreciated, though this is nothing new. And your thread title is rather misleading in that regard.

However, I'm sure there's someone on this forums who didn't know they could do that yet.

half pressing a button on the side is easier than sliding open ur phone, pressing 3 buttons at once and sliding it again.

But I'd have to slide the keyboard for Ctrl-Backspace.

Ctrl + shift + r doesnt do anything for me?

I am using the unlock switch on the side to wake it up (im at the desktop) then open the keyboard, hold ctrl + shift + then press r and then shut keyboard again.

Am I missing something?

it worked with me, actually i thought Ctrl+Shift+r only works with the browser. BUT is there a way other than having to slide out the keyboard or downloaoding proximityd and shortcutd?

-pictures
-conversations (only in the menu for which u choose which conversation you want to view, not the actual texts/ims
-settings
-contacts
-email
-app manager
-file manager
-notes (but u cant type unless you have a portrait mode keyboard)
-sketch

if its already integrated in the os,then i don't get why nokia didn't add a "enable rotation"button in the configs.

really
i don't get it

The reason is that it is not a satisfactory implementation. From the developer's point of view, it's better leave out a feature, than include a half-baked one. Far less hassle.

Just imagine how many complaints they would have received if every user could easily set the device to auto-rotation. We'd have even more 'It no wrk, plz hlp??!!' threads.

Because when they started it was still actively developed, it seemed sure M5 would get full portrait. After it started withering, the code was there to rotate all, but only a few apps had the code to deal with the new layout, so it was left hidden for those who want a certain app that works, or one that is important to them to be portrait.

Once it was wounded, M5 got no more. The only thing that was added, to my knowledge, was MicroB menus in portrait.

Yeah, like me for example. I've been checking these forums ever since I got my N900 (that is 10 months ago), and it's really not like all the important info rubs itself into your face once you get here.
It's also not like you're guaranteed to find it if you spend half an hour (or way more) looking for it - definitely not if you try using the site search in the top right corner.
It's not even like all the important info is there at all....

But my point here is, I'm grateful for all the people who take some time to share a useful piece of information with the community.

marxian 2010-12-14 15:11

Re: PORTRAIT MODE for pictures, conversations, settings, contacts and other pre installed programs

The difficulty in finding information is caused by all the new threads that are created by people that don't use the search function. Hence, when someone does use search, they get all the pointless threads, whilst the one thread containing the answer is buried, so they create a new thread...
