Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
I got Samsung Galaxy S for about two month but still got back to N900. Cant really beat its hardware keyboard AND Maemo's multitasking + terminal ++++
N900 = ultimate geek device in pocket, but if you're not that hardcore you should go with Android device :) Also i love stylus. It doesnt mess your phone screen with grease and other nasty stuff you got from "fingering you device" :D |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
N900 of course...
|
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
Desire Z
* no front facing camera * memory slot under battery (no hot swapping) * no IR * just 1,5 GB internal memory * no TV out |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
I don't know much about Desire but I was thinking of getting Desire Z as I need HW keyboard, everything was going well but the photo and Video camera are what stopped me and I guess HTC's are quite lagging on these coz its same with HTC 7 Mozart that my fren is using atm.

Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
as you said, no keyboard in desire. Get n900. Its NOT outdated. A lot of applications and a lot will keep on porting specially from linux if not anything else. Its got the best browser. The community is awesome. Btw I think you should be able to get a better deal, just search the internet or ppl in this forum should be able to tell you if they have recently checked any better deals/prices. We have a nice irc channel called #maemo at freenode too you can have live chat there.
About games, there are all kinds of emulators available that people use, but I dont play any games on n900 except for the built in Mahjong which I'm addicted to. The firmware is very mature now. All this community and stuff around n900 may seem a bit geeky, i love it but if you have no problem with it then you are only going to love your n900 experience. Plus I hope you get a gud device without any hardware faults like mine! |

as others have said, the desire series is a good choice if you don't need the extreme hackability of the n900. i personally want a phone that works without having to modify too much, with good software support. if i were to buy one today, i would go for the desire z instead of the n900. in addition to other things, battery life is reported to be better. all this said, i'm still ok with my n900, just wishing that: - ovi maps got updated, or at least reduced the loading time - flash player got updated - the media player had gapless play support - |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
sigh ... n900 is simply the best ... but if you don't know why then you need a phone not a computer.
n900 freedom to do ... well just about anything you want. Hey I've got PHP in my pocket! rgds |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
I´ve got both.
Keep going back to the N900. If you like to tweak your phone (themes, icons, put widgets and shortcuts WHEREVER you want) then the N900 is your choice. I can also say that with equal use, the Desire has had more lock ups/freezes and application fails than my N900, however the phone app on the N900 is pretty shite. Delays in unlocking the screen and having to unlock the phone just to end a call can all be too frequent and annoying. The N900 email application is great ( I like the fact that I can have multiple accounts that I can see/select all from the same screen, unlike the Desire which you need to switch between) If you want an internet device that that has a phone, get the N900. If you want a phone with internet capabilities, get the Desire |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
Thanks for the Advices guys.. I am still looking forward for some more ...
@jaeezzy & @Kolos DesireZ & Deire HD is very expensive over here..So i am leaving them... Only Looking for Desire... @abubakar Yes tht is my another fear... I am hearing tht Some of the Brand New N900 have Hardware Probz.. Hope Mine will also be good as urs :d @onethreealpha Still confusing hehe :p , Anyways Nice advie , Thanks for tht I Am Loving N900 through Youtube videos & readings very much... but still a backforce thinking tht " Will it be a Bad decision " thts y I asked to u guys ;) |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
Have to be honest with you and say unless you love to tweak your phone and spend loads of time on an internet forum trying to get your phone to function the way you want you are probably better off staying away from the N900. Everyone here will tell you go for N900 but if you went to the HTC forums you can guess what they say.
For a main stream user I think this would be a no contest. HTC destroys the N900. Give the two devices to 100 average consumers to try out for a week that have no bias to HTC, Nokia, Linux or Android and I am guessing like 95 will pick the HTC. However, the keyboard is important to you which confuses the situation. Desire Z has a keyboard but you have said that is too expensive. What of the Galaxy Epic? Is that available and affordable where you live? That has a hardware keyboard and a pretty amazing one at that, with dedicated number keys. |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
@bbkshine
For emails, chatting, posting on forums is definitely better to have HW keyboard. You must decide what are your priorities. |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
I have to be honest with you and say that if you want to minimize expenditures, the N900 wins and it's not even close. Maybe someone will explain how to use their HTC Desire for $15 a month, as I use my N900. Admittedly, it's a bit tricky, but I have more trickyness than money.
It's funny how these threads often have the unspoken assumption: Money is no object. From my point of view, Money IS an object -- an important one. So the cost of the phone and the plan actually matter. Since you can now buy an N900 for $350, its economic advantage is bigger than ever. |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
Yeah definitely decide your priorities...
But you always try an e bay N900 for...say...2 months...if you don't like it you'll still be able to go with android...and the Nexus S will be out...and at least you'll be the first who will update to 2.3 gingerbread and futures versions... |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
dead simple...N900.
But even better...wait. Buy a cheap phone and wait for android 2.3, win 7 or meego phone. Will be a great next year :) |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
N900.
Because you're here. |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
You've come to the right place...
Definitely N900 obviously!!! But seriously, though... Still go for the N900!!! HTC phones normally have high SAR levels... |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
Personally I can't even consider getting any phone before I see Nokias MeeGo phone.
But for me a physical keyboard is a must, so I'd go with the Desire Z. |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
Dont understand why anyone would buy an Android device.
If you want apps go for an iPhone, if you want a hackable device with great hardware then the N900 still has no peer in the market (great little keyboard, loads of storage, fm transmitter, tv out usb host mode etc). |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
I've switched for a Desire Z, I was tired of the missed calls, the laggyness of the UI, the mail client which is a joke, etc.
Both phones have pros and cons. I prefer the screen of the Desire Z, the UI is much more responsive and fast than the one in N900, the mail client is very fast, the phone functionalities are better, the UI is polished, there are a lot of apps, the browser is very fast and responsive, etc... But the N900 has a better keyboard, has more gadgets (IR, FM transmitter etc), is more open, I have the feeling to control the phone in maemo, where in android I have the feeling that a lot of things are not under my control, the external speaker of N900 is better, the task manager is far better (no way to close an app by default in android, no preview of the apps open), etc.. Overall, I would say that android is better when it comes to use the phone only as a phone, or for average joe. N900 is good, but annoying when it comes to basic functionalities (phone / mail / surf) |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
If u dont want to use a lot of time tweaking and haxing your phone go for desire. I was thinking this same question in june and If I had to choose now between n900 and desire, I still wouldnt know which one. Although I bought n900. Google for "htc vision", if you have time to wait for it, I would buy it now when i have seen n900 and desire. HTC vision 1ghz processor + qwerty

Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
Want a phone with PC functions? Get Desire. Want a PC with phone functions? Get N900.
They are kind of uncomparable. Read reviews of both phones, go to youtube, etc. By the way, if you love portrait, you can forget about N900. N900 is landscape only. (Despite some applications which can rotate, but desktop, menu, contacts, etc, the "main" system is all in landscape. If you don't have landscape, then you better watch some youtube videos about both the phones and then decide. If you have a phone shop close to you (FNAC, i.e.) you can try both phones and decide which one of them fits you. |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
ive got n900 and the desire, i preffer n900
|
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
keep in mind that the n900 lacks a compass or voice navigation software, which pretty much all android (or symbian, for that matter) smartphones have.
if that's not an issue for you, its probably among the best bang for buck you can get at the moment, even if you never do any programming or hacking more advanced than getting preenv to work so you have some decent games beyond angry birds. look for deals on it used. search this forum for one of the endless threads about how the n900 sucks and nokia has abandoned it and maemo is dead etc etc and make the dissatisfied an offer. i would assume theyll let it go for cheap :) |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
Certainly N900,is stable, fast, quality phone with pc fuctions.Maemo is not dead.

by the way, i think that the htc desire is for "medium-heavy" users; it have a lot of cool thing but you can do anything with them. In the other side, you have the n900. I have to be honest; if you leave the n900 with the factory things/settings ,you will be dissapointed (at least, me) But in the moment that you install some apps (like kernel power for overclock, ipv6) and stuff like that, you will have a phone that is capable to do things that any phone can't do. If I you, i choose N900, with no doubts. |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
just to add a little comment, sygic (10) really sucks, I have used it to travel, and honestly it's barely unusable when it comes to complex situations, with multiples roads, it's slow, the colours used are weird, it's unstable... It does it's job, but there are far better gps apps (not on N900 of course)
If you don't want any headache, go for a desire. If you like hacking or tweaking your phone at a low level, the N900 is the perfect phone for you. |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
Get the Desire HD (Not standard).
768MB ram and a 1ghz snapdragon 2nd gen (48mn core). The N900 is the best phone for a true geek, but the DHD is a damn great phone! |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
I got the Nokia C6-01. It's beautiful! But the N900 still performs better in most areas.
|
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
What about the samsung s epic? it's got everthing the n900 has too ( no infrared, but multitouch ) and is running Android!
|
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
Can we collectively realize that Sygic isn't the only voice navigation solution available? There's at least two solid ones: Mappero, and Navit. I just installed Navit using an install script from the thread discussing the Navit port on the N900, it works really well. Both use eSpeak, which like most open source projects, is rather flexible. In Mappero, you can even replace the voice files used with your own easily, and as far as I know, you should be able to do the same to eSpeak as a whole, thus changing Navit's voice guidance. (In a quiet room eSpeak will sound rather loud, but when you're driving it won't be noticeably loud. The ONLY issue is that you have to work a little to download the maps, and the voice navigation volume from eSpeak, near as I can tell, does not change with your N900's volume settings. Either it's on in the General profile, or it's off in the silent. [I don't use more than the two stock profiles - never needed more.])
It used to be that I'd recommend Navit over Mappero because it had both voice AND an internal routing engine. HOWEVER, I just saw a thing called "MoNav routing daemon" in FApMan (in Devel only for now), which basically is just that - a routing engine, so that all those programs that needed to go online to route, can now be written to use MoNav instead.... NOT suggesting you download this RIGHT now, but since Navit isn't being as actively developed as Mappero, this is extremely promising, and I would wager in months at the latest, possibly in days, we'll see the 10-or-so available mapping/navigation programs on the N900 using it (since most already use Open Street Map project maps for their mapping). I'm guessing 6-3 months ago, users of the N900 could turn to Sygic because nothing better did exist back then, and the open source stuff wasn't up to par. But I would say it is, by now. Anyway, I won't type up a full opinion about advantages of a Desire or an N900, but for the maps themselves, you don't even have to pay anything at this point. Just install Mappero, or dig up the thread and install Navit, and you're set. (Okay, I can understand how I type "not" instead of now [muscle memory for 'not' more ingrained then for 'now'], but how the hell do I manage to type "great" when I meant to type "thread"?) |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
i beg to disagree that resistive touchscreen is a downside or maybe it's by preference. i still prefer my n900's screen over my itouch 4g. editing and copy/paste is so painful on a capacitive. pinch might be better than swirl but putting just a bit more effort wouldn't hurt or even kill you. same as applying like 3-5% more pressure on the n900's resistive. it's sensitive...
a psp or ds for a video game is way better in playing. i'll stick with physical buttons than multi touch thank you very much... n900's multitasking prowess is still the best... if you can't wait, i'll go for n900 or desire z / g2. if you can wait, might as well wait for those dual core processors (i know lg already released on in korea) next year. |
Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
Shun the N900. It's an EOL (end of life) item and despite it being incredibly able; it does not have a lot of consumer level items - read: support, popular and modern games, gaming frameworks like OpenFeint for instance - and ultimately you're tied to this (albeit awesome) community, you'll not have items that will get upgrades like Skype for instance.
Shun the HTC Desire. The build quality, while decent, isn't great. Expand your options if you could. Good luck with your endeavors. |

Re: N900 Or HTC Desire ?
N900 wins Desire, but there are better phones than N900 for you.
If your in USA: I'd recommend the EPIC 4G. If not in the USA (ie GSM frequency): I'd recommend the Motorola Milestone2 If you cannot tolerate MotoBlur (and can't wait months for custom ROMs): I'd recommend the HTC Desire Z If you don't need QWERTY at all: Get Nexus One (SLCD), its the only beast phone with a physical trackball (great for Quake 3, the like, apps and browser). If you don't need that aswell: Get the iPhone 4, or the Nokia N8, or the Acer Stream S110. That's the short list, all other smartphones seem inferior to these options. But this is assuming you need to buy it now and that you can't wait for the N9/MeeGo/iPhone5/killerDroid. |
