AR - drone flown with a N900
I don't think this has been posted before but an amazing, in my view anyway, of a AR - drone being flown by a N900 acting as a remote controller.
Not sure if it is a poster from this site but it would be interesting to know how easy it is to get install the app/program to fly the thing. It would no doubt impress a few other OS mobile phone owners!! http://www.youtube.com/user/katealhola Update It seems the programmer is/was a meamo chief engineer! http://blogs.forum.nokia.com/blog/ka...one-with-meego |
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
from when meego looks exactly as maemo, or the bloger on official nokia doesn't understand a thing?

Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
One big flaw I see is that only one virtual control stick should be on the touchscreen, since the N900 doesn't have multitouch. The other controls will have to be set as keys (the controls seem to be on/off style, so maybe they should all be key anyways)
But this is great, I was thinking I'd have to use urbi or compile the Linux test client app under Easy Debian. |
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
Why not combine 2d input from the accells with 2d input from the screen for a total of 4 degrees of freedom?
|
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
That can work too...I think the iPhone client has that option actually.
|
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
To compensate the resistif 1 input touch screen, that the N900 have, Could we take advantage of the keyboard, compared to iphone.
We would keep full screen video. 1 idea would be, like for starcraft, to log macro commands under 1 key stroke. So when i press "B" ar.drone makes a 180° rotation Left and forward. With such feature, N900 owners will be able easily to kick Iphones *** in ar.Drone battle. |
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
That's Kate Alhola, and she's a learned and wise clever cookie. Those of you launching ill-advised grenades of ASCII should maybe read up on some of her work before cracking off the suppositions and insults.

http://blogs.forum.nokia.com/blog/ka...one-with-meego The application is MeeGo application made with MeeGo UX and MeeGo Qt Quick Components but I am running it in N900 because MeeGo handset is not yet released. I have been running exactly same app in MeeGo handset also but i can't make videos about unreleased devices. It is also intentional to show that it is possible to write MeeGo apps and use N900 for development . Kate |

You can have full screen apps in Meego. The application is made with MeeGo Qt Quick components implementing MeeGo UX. The exactly same code compiles for both N900 and MeeGo handset. Believe me, i have tried ;) Kate |
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
Please tell me the MeeGo device is gonna use resistive multitouch

i was talking about video and not app, as both meego and maemo using same version Qt for now it can be ported from one to another (as Nokia romised us). in video i can see hildon and menu and maemo before app is lauched, so maybe it's for meego, but u run it on maemo, so why than to write only meego? promote? the better way to promote not only to showoff small apps like it was made with n900 with all awesome videos from nokia labs which were or not released or not finished and abonded =( update: my mistake, found the mention that it was used and compiled on maemo as well. |
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
Looks like the forward "bumpers" on the chopper have already seen some action :-)

Kate Why did you highlight my comments when I was only responding to the other poster, who seemed to be suggesting you didn't know what you were talking about? Apologises if I caused offence but what is a "maemo chief engineer in Forum Nokia" shown on your blog if it is not what I referred to in my post? droitwichgas |

Just for clarification, I implemented all app with unreleased MeeGo device and SDK but i just compiled it last monday for N900 to be able make video but also demonstrate that n900 can be used for MeeGo development. As addition to vanilla Qt, application uses MeeGo Qt Quick Components library. We backported these libraries to Maemo5 to allow it run MeeGo applications. Kate |

Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
Man, if only the quadcopter itself wasn't so expensive! With a decent laser mounted to it, and some IR LEDs for night flying, i'd never have to get out of bed to investigate phantom noises my wife hears ever again! haha
And thanks for the comments about Nokia and Maemo. It makes me happy knowing my phone will be useful for a while yet! |
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
Kate, don't let those grumpy few get you down. This project is awesome and your work is much appreciated. Thank you :-)

Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
Great APP!
Where can i get the .deb install file?? Then i will buy an AR-Drone!! I want this on my N900! Not on my iphone/ipod,ipad or these devices are called from the fruit company...Video looks very promising, very geeky also, i never heard of this AR-Drone,saw this only in movies.... N900 Rocks! What can't you do with it?? |
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
thanks for the link, a co-worker does not want to believe that my n900 can do things like AR_Drone same as the iPad can do....hahahaha!

However dont know who maintaining qt-components on maemo cause when I checked git repository there is even more new goodies for the testers soo the deb file is kinda outdated but this is probadly cause qt-component/qtquick is progressing verfy fast now :D so too be honest the feature of maemo/meego is promising atleast for the developers. but hw based products based on meego well we have probadly havee too wait atleast a halfyeaar more. but this does not mean app developers should just stop develop. Cause prof is we have qt/quick! |

my suggestions are using keyboard to rotate and change atitude and when sensors on it could be used with a keyboard too becouse now it happens to me that sometimes i loose or gain hight while holding the right joystick when using accelerometer. another thing there could be a switch to have a picture in picture for example to have the bottom camera in the corner of the screen.(it happend to me while i was controlling my drone with n900 my friend tried to connect with his notebook to see the videostream too but by accident he switched something and in my mardrone app i saw both camera views ! crazy expereince and i would like to have it as a feature. And maybe an attitude limiter off switch would come handy, I want to try fly out of the window without hitting the ceiling :-) ps i put here my first test flight and again, thx for your work and kind support of old n900, I hope more people will appreciate this app. regards Eddie http://vimeo.com/19324084 |
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
Could you write a quick guide to installing the ARdrone control software on Fremantle? Please :D
|
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
As you wish, first I installed almost everything from repositories what was named with qt, so QT components examples , and I believe QTquick , than from Katies garage page i downloaded last deb version of mardrone https://garage.maemo.org/plugins/ggi...5d37c11d6c24e9 (the last item in the list) and copied it to my memory , opened via file manager and installed. A new icon appeared in my menu Mardrone :) before lunching the app, first connect to your drone, and than lunch the app. I have sometimes issues to take of after crash, sometimes it helps to turn emergency on and of and than press fly, sometimes i have to restart the app. Hope it helps

Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
The AR-Drone is to expensive and to big and not beautiful.
With the n900 you can do much smarter things: There are now helicopters for about 60$. They are very smart and can fix location and speed direction and orientation. Some of them are controlled by infrared. Now you can fix the n900 to such a helicopter (protected by a ruber construction!) Then you can use a laptop to control the helicopter. (The laptop communicates with the n900 by wifi-tethering on the n900. The n900 controls the helicopter by infrared.) |

And there is no such helicopter under 100 that would easily take N900 onboard... not infrared for sure. While drone is expensive it provides quite some capabilities, It has two cameras, wifi, small ftp and you it can be programed for object following etc without risking damage to my N900 and it can take some punishment itself. Drone isnt an ordinary helicopter or just a toy for kids :) one has to try to get the feeling of fun and "telepresence" |
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
I didn't want to hurt your feelings for the drone.
I was one of the first who saw it flying. (My neighbour had bought one) I asked him if it worked with n900. He replied that it was only for iPhone. But I already knew that one time it would work with n900. The Drone IS a toy for kids. It doesn't fly very far and very high and the battery was at its end after my neighbour showed it to me. |
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
When you give it to a kid than yes :) with the battery, my other rc helicopter about 450 grams can fly for 10 minutes, and it barely can fly with a 30 gramm camera, but the drone can fly for above 10 minutes, but with a newer and cheaper Turingy battery (2700 mAh) it can stay in air for 30 minutes, but i recommend small pauses between :) the heigh.. with my n900 yes only 6 meters in heigh, but when i turn of echolocators with other program on my pc It can high as 20 meters for sure, I didnt had the guts to try more, but you can see on youtube fools trying twice as much.
|
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
I don't know how much the helicopters can wear. But the new models seem very strong.
Often they can be charged by USB-cables. You could try to connect it to the n900, I am sure they would fly more than 1 hour. |
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
Quote:
With the drone the problem is its too big for indoor use and I would like more to control a palmsized heli with my N900 but over wifi with video would be fun. I hope it comes a time when the stuff gets cheaper :) I do not like so much solder own things or lets admit , I just cant ;-) so I always have to wait what other people invent & sell. Why I bought the drone ? I was always into rc stuff and previously wanted to buy nokia N8 for 500 € ... but things changed and instead I bought a used nokia N900 and had some money left for the drone :) |
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
You did good!
I was also in the shop to inform myself about the drone. They made a very good offer to me because I am a good client. But I didn't buy it because it hadn't been provided for n900. I don't think that the offer is still available. |
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
I do like the way it looks, but unfortunatly the price is about 10 times the maximum price i would pay for it, and the flighttime is at least around a fifth of what i would be satisfied with for that price :(
|
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
Well, its kind hard to operate it with N900 without multitouch, i have look at the screen often. This is the only app I know for the drone and it needs some finishing touch. If you dont need one, dont buy one :) I wanted to buy a used one.... but no way here.
|
Re: AR - drone flown with a N900
Somthing that would probably be awesome regarding controls, would if there was a way to map a Dualshock3's axes and buttons to inputs for the drone.
