Dell Venue Pro - Sexy!

Ok, so it runs Windows Phone 7 but dang, it looks good! Not a be-all-end-all tech specs: 4.1" AMOLED capacitive display, 1GHz, 8GB/16GB memory, 5MP cam with 720p vid, but for $500ish, daddy want one (limited supply, so take a number).

(I apologize if this is old news, just got a little excited about the form factor...)

Windows 7 can execute the same binaries normal Windows can, correct? If so, it's sexy the way a prostitute is sexy - possibly very, depending on preferences - but you just don't know what it may contract while you're not paying attention.

Seriously, it's not my kind of phone body style (I like land-scape slide-outs more), I can see how it looks nice. I can also see why Windows 7 is looking promising. But I would also want a firewall and IDS ported to it as soon as I got the damn thing, especially if I was getting IPv6 connectivity from my provider in the near future, because then all those port-scanning bots out there constantly hammering everything would jump all over your phone.

And I would really want to have access to something to watch outbound traffic.

Sexy? on the outside yes.

But can we root it with linux and have all the goodies working?

Otherwise.... . . .

Will it run Nod32? I'm not going near it if it doesn't, I might catch something!

Windows 7 can. Windows phone 7 is a very different beast :) The main reason I'm skeptical about Windows on ARM is that X86 is so deeply engrained in desktop Windows development that even if the OS magically ARMified itself overnight, you still couldn't do much as all the libs (closed source, at that) would be X86 for many years.

The phone displays a sign of promiscuity. Be warned!!!!!

It's a very, very sexy phone. Shame that it's so huge though.

Portrait hw keyboard looks good but what's the point, really? Why would someone opt for a more cramped keyboard just to be able to view more vertical space on the screen? What is the application where this is a good idea?

I like the portrait look better than landscape honestly. Less scrolling up and down than when in landscape. 840 (or so) pixels as opposed to 480 (or so) pixels. I'll choose more info on the screen than less anyday whilst typing.

Cramped? I do have to personally agree with that. But after it having a layout like the current Blackberry (take your pick) then honestly people have gotten somewhat used to portrait and the keyboard below.

This might become my next phone.

When typing, I'm interested in seeing my own paragraphs as well as possible. Everything else is a distraction. I don't see how portrait orientation is helping me with that.

I don't deny the fact that the phone looks good with portrait keyboard extended, but from a strict utilitarian perspective, I guess the users will end up feeling a bit stupid when using the device after a few weeks (when the novelty has worn off)?

Dell is very bad quality! I used to buy a lot from them but when I bought their 1300€ LCD-TV 2600 26" some years ago it went black 2 years later. In fact it was a default error because many others suffers the same and didn't get any compensation. Looks good but bad quality. Never again!
