N900 car crash survivor
Ok, so, to sum it up:
N900 was attached to a GPS Stand, attached to the front windshield by a sucker. I had it connected to the car sound through a P2 cable. Night-time. Animal crosses road. Try as I might to compensate the resulting oversteer, car ends up on the grass by the roadside. Results: The car rolls over itself; 4 to 6 times. The driver side windows and the rear windshield are now broken. I assume the phone must have been thrown out the window on the last rollover, as I could now hear the track previously being played on the car's audio system now coming from the outside. The car luckily settled on its tires. It was pitch black outside, and while stumbling through bushes and wild grass, I was able to guide myself to the phone through the music. Later on, I checked how it was, and aside from a minor scratch in the Zagg shield applied to the touchscreen (the rest of the body was uncovered; few scratches, though), and a bit of dirty between the phone and the screen slider... ...the phone was intact and fully operational; everything still worked as it should. I must say I was impressed. Anyone with similar survivor stories? |
Re: N900 car crash survivor
Mine fell of the couch once. That was a heart stopping moment I can tell you.
I have to admit though, It's not as an impressive tail as yours :D |
Re: N900 car crash survivor
:O Pretty bad that my man! Lucky to be uninjured!
I've got a story......I fell off an 8' wall whilst standing (so add that height) with the phone in my pocket. I went into a coma on life support so it was pretty bad. The phone took some impact but only has scratches around the front edges (metal raised bit surrounding the screen) and is fully functional. I too was impressed. |
Re: N900 car crash survivor
Lost mine on the ground while walking. It slid and ended up with large scratches on the screen and scratches on the metal around the screen. Looks but ugly, but fully operational.

Well, it seems these phones were built to last, even if the OS they're running is a bit cranky. |

On the other hand though, im still alive, not in pain anymore and apart from smell & taste, i'm not hindered by it :D Lesson learnt, stay off walls when you've had a couple too many  +1 again for n900's robustness in my case |
Re: N900 car crash survivor
Dude, you are focusing on 'is my cell phone alright?' after a near death experience. You should talk to someone. *pet*

Re: N900 car crash survivor
i was running to catch a train once and as though in slow motion the phone flew out of my belt case, spun around in mid air then landed and skidded about 10 feet away from me. like all of you my heart stopped and i thought it was fecked.
i have always used the OTTER BOX case and i have to say that this case saved my phone. the phone slammed so hard on the ground that the bezel around the screen (part of the case) flew off and the metal surround on the screen was knicked. I also always use a screen protector (mine is an iphone protector that i cut to fit my n900) aside from that the slider was a little weird after that but the phone has always remained fully functional. THE MORAL OF THIS STORY.... BUY AN OTTERBOX CASE!!!!!! |
Re: N900 car crash survivor
I rear-ended a car on the freeway, my car caught on fire, by instinct, I started recording with my N900.

It wasnt my first thought however, the other priorities took over for a while, its only now I can reflect on how well it did (and how not well I did!) Now with the metal in me, im closer to having the n900 strength.....although I dont plan on doing that again! I'll do show and tell too: After my op to put me right - Clicky The brain surgery scar - Clicky How i normally look (for comparison) - Clicky |

moral of kaos_king's story:
DONT DRINK EXCESS ALCOHOL! (sorry mate but I hate hearing bout stupid **** ppl do when drunk, hope U get well asap....) |

I know what you mean about drunk accidents, and as much as others may say this, I'm really not normally like that. I dont drink to excess, but apparently this time I did. It doesnt help that I've have no memory of that day, even when I was sober, but my friends say I was drunk, so I have nobody to blame but myself  |
Re: N900 car crash survivor
my greatest n900 fall was 3-5 feet. and its winter with a freezing -26 decrees Celsius. because of snow covering the ground, no scratches, i did not even heard the device fell or a "BLAG!!" sound.
still, that experience almost killed me! everything on the device itself is still working. @number41: good thing you are okay, and still you got the strength to look for your n900. |

Re: N900 car crash survivor
I imagine things could have gone much worse if you had it plugged to a car charger....

@number41
Glad you're ok and the N900..:) One question:- Was the animal hurt in anyway? |
Re: N900 car crash survivor
I actually flipped my car similarly to the way the OP did, with four differences:
1. I didn't have any animals to blame, just a brief moment of inattentiveness and a millimeter-or-two-too-sharp jerk of the wheel when I first felt one of my wheels go out of the lane. At the time I still could have fixed everything if it wasn't for that instinctive wheel jerk. 2. I flipped around 2 times, and then the car rolled about a fourth of a rotation back the way it had come from - presumably because momentum first carried it into a position beyond where I first was (best as I could count from memory and from the end-result position), and not in a fully around-the-front-to-back axis, but in a spirally way, because of how the car hit the guard rail before flipping, and was facing the direction I had been coming from by the time it stopped. 3. Came to rest on the side, not right-side up. Doors were locked, and the unlocking mechanism (both manual and electronic) got jammed, so I kicked my way out through the front window. 4. I did not own an N900 then. However, the phone I had at the time went flying from the car, much like the owner's. It was daytime, I I eventually managed to find it by walking around long enough. Luckily for me it was in the area, and wasn't catapulted across the highway, so I didn't have to cross any traffic. Screen got scratched up, but I was able to scratch off the protruding parts myself later, so it returned to being smooth as hell to the touch, just with visible scratches, which I didn't mind. Phone lasted just fine until I got my N900 and, months later (as program availability for it skyrocketed), finally decided it was ready to be my phone replacement. But at the same time, my N900 has taken some decent falls onto hard stone tile and once on concrete. Luckily the screen is safe; the concrete fall scratches the back cover on the corners, but other than that it's fine. The worst I've had is needing a reboot when the accelerometer got stuck with one value biased by about a thousand in one direction. Reboot fixed it each time, so obviously the hardware survived just fine. - Edit - kaos_king: If you don't remember that day, and getting drunk isn't like you, I'd be very suspicious of the possibility that your friends, or other acquaintances, did something very stupid or asinine (probably without themselves imagining what the consequences would/could be), which led to your injury, and then decided to cover for each other by giving you the you-got-drunk-and-climbed-on-a-wall-then-fell story. If you trust everyone enough to be sure that's not the case, of course, I don't want to encourage paranoia. But it's a real enough possibility, I think, to deserve mentioning. |
Re: N900 car crash survivor
I was recording myself snowboarding with the phone - doing some fancy moves, scaring tourists, and being a general nuisance - when I stacked it and dropped my phone into the snow.
Slid on my back a good 10 meters or so, then hit the brakes. I was fine (snow = soft), but I was shitting myself about my brand new £200 phone that was now lost. Even worse, the tourists that I had 'scared' earlier started to get their confidence back after watching me fall, and a few were smirking as they went past me. Anyone one of them could have taken the phone or ran over it in an act of vengeance. Luckily, my phone started to ring at that exact moment (or a few minutes later, I forget) and I pretty much just hobbled up the slope towards the sound of the music. It was buried a good 1/2 meter in the snow, but still intact and not even that wet. I even managed to answer the call, and it was still recording. So long story short: Snowboarding is an extremely safe sport, and the N900 is slightly waterproof. |
Re: N900 car crash survivor
i tripped and dropped mine in a bonfire, got it out after a few minutes by finding a fire extinguisher.
Works fine, it's got a bit a scuff on on of the corners from the fire but that's about it |

Re: N900 car crash survivor
While getting in the car, my N900 fell. Had LCD backlight problems. Goes a little brighter when pressed on the side.
Nokia replaced the LCD for $100. After 4 months, the backlight went crazy again, but then the LCD completely turns off intermittently. The phone went in the Nokia Service Center again. After 1 month in their hands, Nokia informs me that it was a internal board problem. I refused the repair. Bought a replacement LCD in eBay ... I was sure it was just the LCD again. LCD arrives .... after removing 4 screws .... I discovered the flex cable was not properly connected in place. Now I have: 1. Lost trust in Nokia Service Center. 2. An Extra LCD panel from eBay. 3. Renewed adoration for my N900. 4. Wonder if my first LCD was really broken. |
Re: N900 car crash survivor
I'm guessing it didn't land IN open flame... Probably feel somewhere into the ashes. *Shrug* Wouldn't know; don't have the money to test on another N900.
