Keep or sell...?

I had reasons to change my carrier from tmobile to at&t. My wife has a iphone under contract and we need a family plan. I'm out of contract so I already grabbed a refurbished iphone 4 three days ago. I like my n900 and I'd like to keep this. But n900 is not compatible with at&t 3g and it's getting hard to find reasons I have to keep. I researched and if I sell my n900, I can get some profit. I know the final decision is mine but I'd like to get some ideas from maemo people. Should I keep this (for backup) or sell it right now before the price is going down?

Gadget prices NEVER go up. If you don't use it, sell it off, you can buy it back for cheaper if you ever change your mind. Even more so if you buy from the secondhand market.

Sell. You'll not get any more for it later.

How much did you pay for it?

Did you buy it new or used?

Well, I've used for 10 month. So practically, I cannot get any profit from the original price I got for n900. What I mean for profit is that I can cover some expense for the iphone 4 by selling it. Maybe I have to start preparing to sell it based on everyone's advice...

buy low sell high can work also for gadget - don't sell!

If you have a trip planned to US. go there, buy it and sell it in EU. Simple ;)

You can expect second hand device prices to drop when $HARMATTAN_DEVICE comes out. Before that, it's a good idea to sell, and after that, it's a good idea to buy if you are on budget ;-).

Well, yes, I've done that myself...

But there's the cost of trip (or a fraction of that that's devoted for gadget mongering), risk of custom payments, non international warranty issue, non localized components (carrier compatibility, power plugs, whatnot); etc.

And at the end of the day, you're still holding a piece of thing that drops its value by the day and never goes up,

I don't calculate like this.

I think that the most expensive device is the device that you don't use.
For such a device 1$ is too much.

Every device loses its value with its age.
If you have used it intensively it was a bargain.
You have to calculate the amortisation.

I will never give away my n900 because I don't know if there will ever be a device of quality open like this.

It seems that Nokia changes to more commercial software (even though Meego is more open than Maemo).
It seems even that on top of Meego there will be more commercial apps and Meego is better designed for that.

I think that the good time of the n900 will never come back.

I've bought my n900 for half of the price. (used 1 week with warranty).
Every dollar was worth its price until today even if it is cheaper today.
But I could use it until today and that's also worth its price.

And even when the n900 will be completely amortized the idealistic value will be so big to me that I will never give away this exceptional device.
This will also be the best way to keep the memory of my settings and dates.

After long years of catching dust in a forgotten corner some former electronic junk may sell at higher price.

Example: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/...n7082487.shtml

Also it seems that in some cases a mint condition N900 is now possible cheaper than the Nokia 7110 (the 1999 phone that should have had the N900's functionality back then) ;)

With more than 100K devices in circulation (>1M ?), I think it'll be awhile (read: way past all of our lifespans) before the n900 goes up in value again.

So it's probably more "we buy low, they sell high... (we dead)" at best.

The N900 has so many uses besides that of "phone". Just the TV out alone playing video encoded with X264 at native DVD resolution is worth the cost of keeping it. Add in the superb browser, tons of free, cool apps and games, and 32+ gigs of storage, and it's a no-brainer. Just keep it, you'll find plenty of uses for it in the future (unless you're a real hyper fanboy who switches phones every six months, in which case you wouldn't even be asking, so I assume you're not ;^)

sell now, buy back in 6 months for 25% less, load meego 1.2 and enjoy the new user experience. Personally, I'll be holding onto my N900 for another 2 years at least.

I think it'll take that long before a better phone is available.

No I'm not such a frequent phone-switch guy. Frankly, n900 is my first smartphone in my life :). Yeah I agree with you points... I might keep n900 as my life milestone gadget. I'm just afraid that I don't use it much and it is becoming useless...

Anyway, anyone tried to install other linux such as ubuntu in n900 (like easy-debian) rather than dual boot (not nitdroid) ? I tried easy-debian one and it seems not convenient. Is it fast and usable? Because I know there are many apps even in Ubuntu (software center).

Re: Keep or sell...?

I lost my previous N900 on Sunday evening probably somewhere in the arctic snowbanks of Southern Helsinki. On Monday I bought a new N900 - the last that the shop had. 450 euro. Must be out of my mind, but having now played with my wife's N8, I'm more convinced than ever that N900 could have become a hit of sorts with some slightly different design (copy N97) and marketing.

I will wait for MeeGo.
