[ANNOUNCE] Maemo.org Application Download Statistics (Unofficial)

I've created a very rough PHP page that grabs the raw download count figures from the maemo.org Download Statistics graph's JavaScript arrays and display them in tabular form. Now you can query the daily and monthly download counts of any Diablo and Fremantle package, including those that have only been submitted to Extras-Devel and/or Extras-Testing:

http://maemo.dadablog.net/AppStats.php

I'm not sure if I've interpreted the data correctly and hence I'm not sure if the figures are accurate or not. Please use this page at your own risk

You Sir are fu**ing awesome!
If your page is correct then my app has been downloaded over 29K times in December alone!

Awesome job! Though I assume this is much inflated compared to user count because everyone downloads each update and they (hopefully) re-download after upgrading to PR1.2 or PR1.3. I guess these would show up as spikes in those weeks.

Also: I suggest you have a look at flot (with jquery) if you are looking to graph this stuff on the fly.

Yes, those figures are raw download counts only. :p
Thanks for recommending flot. I will look at it.

Raw download counts?!? extkbd announce thread is visited roughly 8000 times and have about 150 posts, half made by me. It is absolutely impossible the application to be downloaded 30000 times. Either your query into the db is wrong, or db itself contains garbage.

Here is the download stats graph of extkdb package provided by maemo.org, which is somewhat consistent with my page:

http://maemo.org/download-stats2/ind...tkbd&os=Maemo5

and I'm not sure why the count of individual packages may not be realistic / accurate.

I don't work for Nokia and I am neither member of the Maemo.org maintenance team nor the Maemo Council member. I'm just an ordinary user and casual developer. I was just trying to present the figures that are publicly available in a different way....if those figures are not correct, I'm not the one to blame at... :p

Again, use this page AT YOUR OWN RISK :D

cuteTube has circa 118K downloads. BS or not, I'm putting it on my CV. ;)

Thanks for your great work. :)

You saying it is too high or too low? If too high, keep in mind not everyone comes to t.m.o and a lot that do usually just lurk.

If it is too low, then I might be in the same boat. Excitedly I looked for Dialcentrals download count to see it totalling at 45K. Disappointed that a young whippersnapper like qgvdial might be outdoing me, I checked some of my other apps and their download counts were in the expected range. I then checked the download page which claims it at 151K.

Just some points to consider when looking at both this data and the downloads page data.

Something else that ties into download counts is updates. Release a lot of updates then you get a higher count.

The main thing I get out of looking at the download statistics is sadness for how many people run software out of extras-devel.

It pretty much correlates with amout of users who come here on raving how slow and bad their N900 is :D

The "more releases" conclusion is probably correct.
Devil is supposed to be devilish, but these statistics have actually prompted me to complete qgvdial to the point where it can be pushed to testing and then extras.

OP has motivated a lazy *** like me.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Maemo.org Application Download Statistics (Unofficial)

@epage: I am saying too high.

Lets continue my example with extkbd. I promote last version in testing on 20.11.2010 according to package manager. lets give it another 10 days until everyone is up to date (generous ain't it :) ). So according to those statistics from 1st of December till today roughly 200 people per day download extkbd to set layout of their new shiny keyboard attached to n900? I refuse to believe that, sorry.

@amandalam: I am not trying to insult you, it is just my six sense saying that something is wrong with those values.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Maemo.org Application Download Statistics (Unofficial)

@freemangordon
Btw. Is any other package dependend on your extkbd-package?

I meant the age of the package rather than the age of the programmer.

I'm much a fan of "release early, release often". This in theory would get you more feedback plus it would not provide as much encouragement for people to go out of extras or extras-testing if people didn't let there software sit in extras-devel for extended periods of time.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Maemo.org Application Download Statistics (Unofficial)

Those statistics include all update downloads as well as regular install downloads. That's what makes them much higher than real users count.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Maemo.org Application Download Statistics (Unofficial)

There's quite a lot of understandable push for that though. Half the good stuff is only in devel, and never leaves devel. I honestly tried to stay just in Extras when I first got my N900, but at the time, all the new good stuff would come out and it would never leave devel for months. FreOffice could edit documents for months before a version supporting that made it out of devel. (Or is it still not in extras?)

The situation IS getting better, but by now there's countless posts telling people to go to devel.

That's funny; I've been running software out of extras-devel literally for years and haven't been having big problems or raving about how bad my N900 (or N810 or N800) is.

epage, nice catch! :o

It looks like that my previous PHP script was not fetching enough data per line, and so DialCentral's extras-devel counts later than August were not counted. I've fixed this and the total count of DialCentral should now be consistent with the graph.

@amandalam: I think I just found a bug: It is Jan 4th. On the stats page for qgvdial, it shows the counts for 1st=1706 and 2nd=1945. The sum however is 1945.
One off summation error?

Thanks for finding this! The count for the first day of each month wasn't counted due to this bug. This should now be fixed.

Thanks Amanda Lam!
I was looking for a tool like this for some time to track the statistics of some packages in extras-devel.

Thanks again!

The stats are not being updating last few days. It seems that the last date the stats were updated is 2011-06-20.

I've noticed same problem. Does someone know why stats are not updated?

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Maemo.org Application Download Statistics (Unofficial)

This is ... bizarre! 73814 total downloads for footify (including updates, I know) and here I thought it was as dead as a door nail.

The trend from November 2010 to now is definitely a descending one, but still.

The above cite does not currently work for OS2008 (Maemo 4.1). Just Maemo 5.

Does somebody know how to read the download statistics of Maemo 4 packages ?

The "Download Statistics" in :

http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/integral/

does not work either.
