extras-testing: many applications to be tested

Hello,
I think the "problem" is known, but perhaps should be refreshed: there are many applications (new or upgrades) to be tested and evaluated in extras-testing so that they can be unlocked and used by all users.

Please, look at this wiki.

Re: extras-testing: many applications to be tested

I counted 195 applications. The oldest is there since February 2010...

:D ...People go, test and rate... :)

Same old silly question: How do i submit my vote?

Re: extras-testing: many applications to be tested

This whole testing method is totally flawed. There should be a way for people to rate it when they download it from the application manager.

To vote on a package you need to go to the page for the relevant package (links to packages can be found from the package QA list; see the first post of this thread). You also need to be logged in to maemo.org in order to submit your vote. For many application users this process might not be very clear, and one reason why many applications do not receive votes.

billybobjones 2011-01-09 20:03

Re: extras-testing: many applications to be tested

I wonder if maybe one solution to this problem would be for developers to add a link within their program to the package with a quick explanation on how to vote... perhaps this will remind people until someone fixes this broke system.

Re: extras-testing: many applications to be tested

You are right. The trouble is, that it is not obvious how to vote. I have been to the relevant page for the application, but I still don't see where to vote.

You click either the 'thumbs up' or 'thumbs down'. They are located above the list of existing votes, but you can only see them if you are logged in.

That's funny you answered because your's was one of the main apps I wanted to vote for. Cheers. I'll take another look.

Thanks, but cuteTube has already been voted into Extras. :D

Re: extras-testing: many applications to be tested

Yeah, I know it's done now, but thanks for showing how to vote. I feel stupid now with it being that easy. I was looking for a "vote" button.
Perhaps one of the maintainers of maemo.org, could implement something a little more obvious. I'm sure alot more people would then vote and pitch in.

That may cloud the difference between this voting, which is based upon the QA checklist, and the "hot or not" voting at Downloads.

That may very well be, but the problem is that many programs are not getting voted out of extras and devels due to the obscurity of the method. Hell, to be honest this is the first time I've voted for programs that I use pretty constantly. You can make a case that I'm lazy as I knew that there was some place to vote for them but I think it's made pretty obvious by this thread that many people are like me and if you have to come to maemo.org, login, locate the repository and find the program you want to vote for you're just not going to get a lot of people doing that. There has to be an easier and more visual way to vote for tested programs then the way it currently is.

is forum membership and website membership a separate thing? I can post on the forum until my thumbs fall off, but it won't let me use my forum account for the rest of the maemo.org website.

I would really like to help if i could.

Yes. They are separate!

If someone is interesting to become a "super-Testers".
Read this:

Wow, if I knew, I would not have wasted so much time passing an application at a time! Thanks!

Well, I hope someone appreciates the effort :D Also because I have insertet the version and not included those that are ready to be unlocked.

as you can see from that spreadsheet we already had "testing" threads but they ended because testing group got large enough...I think? Dunno current situation. This whole maemo.org is bit mess on easiness of usage side. Everything is basically there but well...hmmm...you have to really really dig stuff out there and still everything is really fragmented.

Re: extras-testing: many applications to be tested

I'm quite agree with you ... I just think it is wrong to ask only 10 Super Testers (there are still all?) for all this work ... So I do tests every now and am trying to spurn others to do tests

James_Littler 2011-01-11 21:05

Re: extras-testing: many applications to be tested

Maybe we should ask the developer of faster app manager to implement a voting method.
It would require an account, it must be possible to get 2 anchor tags for each app out of a website and implement links in the app.

BTW I only need 2 votes to get my icon-set approved which will mean I can promote Pleego Remix to extras.

Please can 2 people test and vote for my icon-set.
http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...icon-pack/0.3/

Thanks

Re: extras-testing: many applications to be tested

/rant - sorry
maemo.org should have "marketing" group that actively advertises stuff going on around here. Also "ad" banners that get updated constantly telling what is going on and where some help is needed should be there without even having to had some insightful conversation with bright minds about it. This place has flavor of "academic" strongly written across it and by this I do not mean good :|

.edit
Less text more images with links. Something like this:
http://pandaboard.org/
Clutter free layout where you can find all tidbits but they are under the hood.

That would be super if the only thing they were rating was the download experience. These votes are supposed to come after testing the application to ensure:

1. [ ] Bug database exist.
2. [ ] Licensing ok.
3. [ ] No illegal/dubious content.
4. [ ] Working provided features.
5. [ ] No missing announced features.
6. [ ] Optification ok.
7. [ ] No performance problems.
8. [ ] No power management issues.
9. [ ] No known security risks.

It takes some dedication, some effort to do it right but the result should be applications that get released to default enabled repositories that are ready for prime time.

I do not argue with your first statement, the backlog of applications is a good indication that something is not working right. I wish I had the answer.

Re: extras-testing: many applications to be tested

Update: today I counterd 190 applications in extras-testing repository.

As mentioned above, surely many of you are already using applications that are still in extras-esting and must be rated. In this case, you do not even make the effort to download applications you do not need, you can give a hand to those already you are using. It can be very helpful to use a application that tells you what applications you have and which are extras-testing.
This application is called: "KISSTESTER".

Re: extras-testing: many applications to be tested

:D In fact, this application is in extras-devel ...
But you can make an exception, it is not harmful and (at this time) works only in read-only mode: To rate, you should go on the web site.
:p

Less ironically, help with it is appreciated :) As pointed out in it's thread it's undergoing a little transformation that makes it zippier, lighter, with less dependencies, and with a little eye-candy as side effect :) Expect it to be pushed to testing this week.

Re: extras-testing: many applications to be tested

I would like to add an option (link) in my application (i.e. SleepAnalyser), so people can vote for it easier.
How ever, the question is, how do I do that in a good way?
The option/status should only be available as long as votes are needed. But to know that, the app would have to check in the internet the current status. How ever most people do not like if an application "calls home".
The other thing would be to just make sure the option is displayed for a few months. It would be quite difficult to guess this time in advance.

The thing that annoys me the most:
When ever i make a minor bug fix and move it to testing, all votes get lost. This is very frustrating for the maintainer as well as the testers.
I wish there would be a better solution for that.

Many complain that there are few applications, but often the developpers did not have the satisfaction of seeing their applications in the free catalogs.

m750, you know many dev didn't care anymore to have apps in extras (stable), most every user use testing or devel ...
