The fact that Android is name of competing operating system shouldn't make Steve Jobs forget that android is also noun meaning a human-like robot. Excluding it from dictionary like this is mean. He is sending a clear message: "If you want to develop androids, use phone with Android/Linux Operating System. iOS is too ignorant to auto-complete this word."

i really don't get steve knobs, he publically slags of major tech companies like adobe etc sayin how their codin is crap etc surely he's gonna end up shootin himself in the foot an lose support from the companies he has slandered, also his suposed dislike of linux is a bit backwards as mac is *nix based just a very backwards one (i heard most stuff is installed to var not usr like every other distro)
but at the end o the day he's a pleb an deserves every bit o abuse ya can throw at him

How can Steve Jobs say anyone's coding is crap, have you ever used x-code? It's utter garbage and doesn't yield the same results every time.

this is what I have to do every day in order to make xcode work.

Click build and run = code sign error
Click build and run again = success

however the only thing i like bout the iphone/pods is the ui controls after watchin my mate do all the pinch to zoom an various other gestures

Mac OS X is not *nix based, it is a fully certified Unix system which conforms to the Unix 03 product standard specifications http://www.opengroup.org/openbrand/register/xy.htm. It is not a "distro" as you call it.

GNU/Linux is a Unix-like operating system with the Linux kernel forming the central part of each distro or distribution.

Actually, it's based heavily on the open-source BSD, which itself is based on UNIX. (ref; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XNU) Apple surrounded the kernel with lots of their own apps. I think that probably qualifies as a BSD "distro". Note that BSD is also a fully certified UNIX system, too. By the by, the term *NIX includes UNIX-like as well as UNIX derived alike (ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/*NIX).

You don't really read, do you? MacOS isn't UNIX. It isn't UNIX any more than BSD is UNIX. BSD is not UNIX either. It's UNIX derived. BSD forked off of UNIX a long time ago, so they're not one and the same. UNIX still exists separately from BSD. Every carefully worded and accurate article makes sure to point out that MacOS X is UNIX-based... not UNIX. (refer to the articles I cited above and also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X)

I will concede on one point of miswording on my part, though. MacOS is actually running the XNU kernel. Period. The SNU kernel is MAINLY based on BSD and based in PART on portions of Mach--so we're both right, actually. It's a BSD and Mach kernel mishmash.. so it isn't really a distro for BSD so much as a distro (collection of kernel with commands and applications for a complete and usable operating system) for XNU.

Sorry,but Mac OS X is UNIX (R) (along with OS/390 which isn't even derived from UNIX code); the UNIX trademark is now owned by The Open Group, and they apply it to their SUS and license it for certified conforming products.

UNIX has multiple meanings, and while some of them certainly would exclude OS X (and include other UNIXen not conforming to any version of the SUS), arguing that someone is wrong or "doesn't read" when they're going by one well-established definition, just makes you look like a jackass. Especially so when the definition they're using (even though it's one I don't particularly like) is the one that carries the most legal force.

EDIT: I was looking back through the thread (which I hadn't read as closely as perhaps I should have), and saw that philheaton already linked to The Open Group's registry like I did. So, Dan... "You don't really read, do you?" :rolleyes:
