Re: SHould i Buy Mugen Power battery for My N900 or Should i get NewTrent 11000mah Powerpack ?

In my opinion the powerpack should be the one as it will serve as a multipurpose device and will not increase the size of your nokia N900.

Re: SHould i Buy Mugen Power battery for My N900 or Should i get NewTrent 11000mah Powerpack ?

Powerpacks and chargers in the wild are more likely to wear or damage your usb port, so I carry a spare battery or two.

Less space than a powerpack, adds less bulk to your N900 than a Mugen. AND much cheaper.

I also bought a mobile battery charger/holder so I can charge a battery off-device - a few £'s on FleaBay.

Is there really no battery model with higher capacity than the stock one that still fits in the space of the regular battery?

Yes, there is, Japod 1350 mAh.

I have currently ~2400 mAh under Mugen cover, made from twho original Nokia BL-5J batteries connected parallel.
I think N900 is easier to type with qwerty with thicker back cover, either if it is on table or if you keep it in your hands and type with thumbs.

No - there's not been any breakthroughs in battery technology that have made it to market over the last year, so there's no way to cram any more power into that space.

Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in...
I also think it is easier to type on the phone when it has the mugen cover and so does redkarma, he has my 'old' mod 2. battery and the mugen cover i ordered a week ago.

And the phone does not feel that big again as meny think.
And it is so worth the extra 7mm when i get SOOOO much more usage out of it.

Re: SHould i Buy Mugen Power battery for My N900 or Should i get NewTrent 11000mah Powerpack ?

Becuz i have an otterbox case that i love on my N900 the Mugen is out of the question cuz of the size.

And New trent battery packs looks as big as the n900 but man 11000 mAh would be awesome to have but the battery pack looks as big as the n900 if not bigger, good to have anyways for home use or long trips.

I have 3 extra batteries & 4 universal battery chargers from digitial power pro and it takes me 3+ to 4 hours to charge all batteries at the same time.

I only carry one extra battery when i go anywhere just in case.

Re: SHould i Buy Mugen Power battery for My N900 or Should i get NewTrent 11000mah Powerpack ?

I think spare battery is better:

Pro:
Backup/replacement option (in case 1 fails).
Less bulk (compared to battery packsor the 2-in-1 battery replacement).
Charging is more convenient. After fully charge 1 battery, keep it as spare and plug in the other battery and charge and use it. Allows flexibility to charge when convenient.
I believe cost should be cheaper (provided you don't get a battery charger device).

Cons:
Inconvenient to charge and install (need reboot).
I don't think losing it could be a big minus point.

Modern smart phones are great but they drain power like crazy. I have 7 chargers around the home, garage, car and office.

I also bought a spare battery and charger/holder for my N900 too. Because the battery is thin I always keep the spare in my pocket, which after a month was still 90% full when I had to use it.

It seems like good cost-effective solution. And I think it really winds up iPhone owners :)

Very unlikely anyone would give up Mugen power battery after they have used to use it and know the benefits.

But if you can get just the back cover, making bigger 2xJapod 2600 mAh battery is not that hard if you just have solder machine available. The most simplest way, is not to disassemble neither batteries, but just solder (+) and (-) cables to the connectors of "the lower" battery in that way it is still connectible to the battery socket of N900. Maybe also use small drill to make space, remove plastic on top of the connectors for the cables to come up from the battery cave.

The above thread about battery mod is still missing instructions of this most simple way of doing double capacity battery. What I did was not to remove any plastic, because it worked without also, but using just little thicker cables it would make sense to remove the black plastic on those places where black and red cables come up (see the pic on the previous link). One must not use too thin cables, because N900 will charge at max 600 mA (and even @1200 mA in a worst case) each battery.

Re: SHould i Buy Mugen Power battery for My N900 or Should i get NewTrent 11000mah Powerpack ?

Another con: If you have a case for your N900, it won't fit if you have a Mugen big battery. I have a Mugen big battery and don't use it, primarily for that reason. Plus, con 2: It looks funny.

I use the spare battery strategy. And another poster mentioned the charge of a separate battery charger as if that was significant. It is if $10 or so breaks the bank for you, but then how did you buy an N900 to begin with? The advantage of a spare battery charger is that you can charge batteries while you are using the N900 and not be tied down to wherever you are plugged in; then it takes way less than 10 seconds to swap batteries once you get used to doing so.

btw, maybe you would be interested to sell that Mugen battery and the back cover to f2thak then.

Of course you can have two double-batteries also and the wall charger, as I do (2xJapod + 2XoriginalNokia5J). Once you have made one double-battery, it is even more easy to do second. I have full double battery (2400 - 2600 mAh) always in a fridge waiting (+5C) and will take it with me to longer trips or quickly change at home if I have no time to recharge the current one inside.

If N900 would support hot swapping of batteries, I may think otherwise. Also, I do not have any special case for N9000 but keep it in my front pocket, so extra thickness (+7mm) does not matter but is indeed benefit when using qwerty-keyboard.

It may look funny :-) but it is impressive and magnificent! I do not much care about themes either, usability and features is what counts 4 me. Flowers and decorations are for other people.

I thought about selling it, but I usually keep stuff...

I think I'll try to brainwash myself into the "impressive and magnificent" mind set. I wonder if anyone makes a case for such a beast? I would prefer hooking it to my belt over having it bulge out of my pocket. Like Mae West might have said, "Is that a Mugen battery + N900 in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"

Mugen offers two kinds of n900's batteries : 1320 mAh and 2400 mAh
i don't know about Mugen's 1320 mAh and i don't know how long does it live, but the 2400 mAh sure lives longer but its big and it comes with a new n900 back cover..a really ugly one and makes n900 even bigger.

hey what's up ya all...
it is really nice to see you all debatng on my question....
shows how many people admire and appericiate the N900

You guys must be thinking where in the hell is that guy who asked the question....

okey sooo...
Dude spare battery is out of the question... some how i did that and now i lost my backup cell that keeps track of time if u take out battery so not a good idea changing battery again and again...
secondly your girl friend or a very important incomming call is comming and the battery is about to die... at that time will you take out that battery and put the spare in, your girlfriend would say A** H**E turned his cell of..... WOOOOO bad idea....
thirdly every day inthe morning do you think you will be able to remember to charge your spare battery and keep it with u....
you search your pockets and think shittttt man forgot it on the table....
foruthly eventually u till break you back cover say many u have noticed it has those small plastic clips....

So keeping a spare battery is seriously out of the question......

Ya Mdziaf dude thanks for the update i will surely wait for your responde after when u will get the battery....

about the mugen battery the back is great and all and i think the new cover has a lens cover too but i usually watch videos on my n900 and i use the stand alot.... sooo that is still missing....

then about the extra power pack. well if you are at some one's place will u take out wire from one pocket and put in other pocket telling people i am charging my cell phone :-D sooo to be honest it is very confeusing....

So what do you guys say....
i know many u guys will curse me..... :-D
but what can i say....

So, all you want is a solution that can't go wrong and has no disadvantages? What if you forget to take your N900 with you?

You are making up stories to help you reject the spare battery solution. It costs about $20 to try it out and be able to say "I tried it for two weeks and it just didn't work for me."

Re: SHould i Buy Mugen Power battery for My N900 or Should i get NewTrent 11000mah Powerpack ?

Well, it would sure be nice if phones supported hot swapping batteries. There could be an internal R/C type battery, very small but powerful, able to run the phone for say 5 minutes (diminishing to 2-3 minutes as the battery gets older). The main battery would keep the small battery charged, so the small battery could power the phone long enough for you to hot swap the main battery. You should also be able to keep the phone running on USB or other external power while the main battery is removed, so you can hot swap.

Re: SHould i Buy Mugen Power battery for My N900 or Should i get NewTrent 11000mah Powerpack ?

Just a quick update on the battery..

I received it a few days ago, but after a few charges, I found that the battery I received is not working properly.. My phone would suddenly die for no reason. Changing back to the original battery fixed this issue..I gave Mugen a call about the problem and immediately they said that the would send me a replacement.

At the moment I'm waiting for the replacement to come..I'll update you again once I've gotten the replacement.

I am quite disappointed that the battery I got had issues with it, but at least their customer service was very helpful.

Re: SHould i Buy Mugen Power battery for My N900 or Should i get NewTrent 11000mah Powerpack ?

with regards to the back cover, the one I got did not come with a lens cover and a kickstand.

even without the lens cover, I felt confident enough to put my phone in my pocket with a few loose change. The back cover is huge, such that the lens is well inside the cover.

however, i did miss not having the kickstand..although the back cover is big, its not big enough to make the N900 stand on its own. and even if you did manage to make it stand, it would stand perpendicular to the surface you put it on i.e. not a comfortable viewing angle..

Re: SHould i Buy Mugen Power battery for My N900 or Should i get NewTrent 11000mah Powerpack ?

Personally, I have an Energizer Energi To Go 18000mAh external battery. The value of this is that I can charge my laptop, n900, pocket Wi-Fi hotspot, iPod & DS3 controller all with the one piece of equipment. That said though, I have a pretty decent-sized backpack to cart it all around in.

There's pros and cons to either argument, but if you're at all concerned about portability, I'd probably go with the Mugen option. It means that if need be, you can just slip it in your pocket and head out. Plus it has the added bonus of solving the issues people have had with the blue line on the shutter & picture quality. You may want to read some reviews of it, but if I remember correctly due to the added bulk it's actually more than capable of standing up without a kickstand.

EDIT: Guess I'm wrong about the last part!

Confirm, the big Mugen doesn't have a lens cover or kickstand.

As a result of this thread, I started using my big Mugen battery again -- pretty cool. The main disadvantage, to me, is that when even it runs out you have to swap back covers and the battery to keep going, unless you have two big Mugen batteries. Of course, this isn't a problem often because of how long the big Mugen lasts.

Or you can keep an unused condom under the Mugen cover so the smaller battery does not pop out.

lol just to spice things up..isn't Hong Kong part of China?

I think that a company going for a global market should minimize the number of defects coming out from its production line. I've read a review somewhere where the reviewer also received a defective battery. Maybe its a one in a 1000 thing..i don't know..anyone else got a defective battery with Mugen?

if its a common occurance, maybe buying it is not a good option for the OP. Waiting for the battery will take about two weeks, from purchase date. if battery is problematic, then its another two weeks of wait. just my two cents

anyhow, With the host mode via h.e.n, I can definitely use some power for usb drive. My current solution is a pack that takes 4AAs, but I am thinking to move up with higher power types.

Re: SHould i Buy Mugen Power battery for My N900 or Should i get NewTrent 11000mah Powerpack ?

The batteries have a total of 6 terminals, 2 for +, 2 for -, 2 for bsi. The phone has 3 terminals, one for each of + - bsi. The two on the battery are supposed to be spring loaded and grip the one on the phone. But, some of the mugen's have had them a bit too far apart, so that only one has made contact. A sudden bump might make the battery lean the other way, so that it shifts from resting on the one terminal to resting on the other, interrupting power briefly.

If you're daring, you can take a needle or something and bend the terminals on the battery inwards making them grip the blade terminal on the phone tighter. But don't do it unless you know what you're doing....

There have also been nokia batteries with the same issue, btw :)

I haven't had a problem like that with Mugen batteries OR with the cheapest batteries I have bought straight from Hong Kong, and I've been buying them for Nokia tablets for several years.
