N900 processor/gpu glitch?

This morning, after charging overnight, my N900 decided to reboot itself.. All went downhill from here - insane stability issues - reboots, freezes etc etc... At some point it even stopped responding at all - it could load up to Nokia screen and then reboot into a endless reboot-cycle. I was really hoping this to be a software issue so I reflashed the device with PR 1.3, but sadly the problems persist... Phone keeps rebooting randomly either while loading up, being on standby on desktop or while loading something. The saddest part of all is that warranty expired _4_ days ago

Phone was running on 950mhz ideal with swappolube on proposed settings.

At the moment I am trying to get a lucky stability window and copy everything from EMMC so I can do a complete reflash, but I really doubt that will work.

Any suggestions on how to fix this, or at least what MIGHT have caused this would be greatly appreciated.

swappolube is not very stable!

try increasing or decreasing the voltage

Underclocking and overvolting could help... But really, once your N900 fried itself from the overclock it's lost cause...

Re: N900 processor/gpu glitch?

Before you admit is fried, take care to reflash both rootfs and emmc (don't forget to backup MyDocs before, including hidden files!). This most likely will give you a reborn n900, perfectly working.

Re: N900 processor/gpu glitch?

if you have your data on emmc then you havent completely flashed device.

Re: N900 processor/gpu glitch?

Problem is I have absolutely no backup of my data.. Trying to copy everything atm and will do a complete rootfs+emmc reflash.

btw Is it possible that settings from swappolube for example have remained active after reflash?

if you live in UK, N900 has 2 year warranty ;)

try to reflash your kernel. on wikii try searching thats problem on kernel.

try this

flasher-3.5 -F <firmware-image> --flash-only=kernel -f -R

may be you should disable watchdog

Reflashed EMMC + rootfs... Still randomly reboots :/ Not sure I can even reach a point where I can disable watchdog

Then it's fried, most probably from overclocking. You can't fix a fried CPU in software.

Oh jesus turs out warranty is 2 years and not 1 as I thought :D Gonna send it in for repairs and hope that OC won't be noticed ?:<

Just in case: Have you tried powering it off and, removing any usb cable and also removing the battery? Also try removing the microSD card and the SIM card and booting without them.

Re: N900 processor/gpu glitch?

Kernel flashes are tracked in /dev/mtd1, don't try to clear them, you'll end up with a brick ;)
They could easily check the CPU is fried and confirm that through the kernel flashes.

Re: N900 processor/gpu glitch?

Blah :X Well better try and see what happens than not try at all :S

Btw Is it possible that its a gpu failure though? I saw like screen tearing and artifacts a few times :s CPU was running at 950mhz on ideal config and was rarely pushed that hard really :/

edit:
Tried starting the phone in R&D mode but it still rebooted :(
edit2:
Now before rebooting I saw an " Internal error ....." but couldnt read it due to another reboot

Fried. You've read the warnings - also about warranty void - when you started overclocking?

I did, but I am in no way saying its anyone else's fault but my own. I don't see what your post is aiming at.

dude, it is very rare cpu is fried. what is more likely is that the ram is having errors. if so just run a ram-checker program. also do u remember the 80:20 rule? 80% of the work is done in 20% when the rest of the 20% is done in 80%. It's called pareto! Google it!!

If you're going to take risks like overclock, you should have probably been a bit better at backing up, than not doing it ever ...

The RAM part actually makes a lot of sense come to think of it. Problem is that I can barely open the menu without the phone rebooting ;/

Data on the phone was not that important really.. My biggest concern is getting the phone working again at minimal cost :D

send the phonee in.
the worst which would happen is they would send the phone back without repairing it...

Re: N900 processor/gpu glitch?

yeah man, i thought mine was fried because it was randomly rebooting, but it was just a loose sim card...

Could you harvest any specific messages from the kernel log (dmesg)?
I had reboot issues when my emmc came loose after dropping the phone on the floor. I could gain stability by turning off swap in that case.

This MIGHT have something to do with my problem, actually. I've been having spontaneous reboots for about a month now. I proceeded to install syslogd and logged a bunch of messages that way for a while, but I never saw anything that was exactly the same regularly - just that something would die, and then most of the time, watchdog would flip out and reboot because that process died. It seems to always have to do with some sort text selection/copying/pasting, or new data coming in to my N900 (typically lots of stuff coming in from the internet). I am pretty sure I remember some error about a device not being found in the syslog logs as well...

At the same time, I have had the /opt (/home/opt technically) partition occasionally become "read only", and I believe ONCE I had /home/user/MyDocs become read-only as well... Anyway, I don't have anything to easily diagnose when swapping happens, but when the N900 does this, it's in situations I would think it likely to be swapping...

Were you ever able to fix your N900 in a more 'true' way, like find some way to fix your eMMC chip more solidly to its casing? Or did/do you just use it without swap / with swap on an SD card?

/dev/mtd2 can have precious informations for this cases.

Took me forever to dig this thread up again: Do you mind telling me how exactly I should go about getting said precious information?

I certainly lack the technical skill to figure anything out of it.

For what it's worth, my issue has persisted through both a normal reflash and a full eMMC-inclusive reflash, and since I don't see forums exploding with the same issue in connection with any software I have, I really suspect it's hardware something or other.

I'd be happy to do a bunch of testing/logging/whatever to figure out this issue, but there's no way in hell I'd know what to make of the results.

The only thing is I have a bunch of syslog logs from earlier (but when this issue was already present), and I can redirect the mtd2 output into a file if someone wants to look at it... Beyond that, I think I'll be trying turning swap off completely for a while, see if that helps.

If this is overclocking damage, it is the first time someone has even claimed such damage to a N900 on this site. Check the 5,000+ posts in the main overclocking thread.

Re: N900 processor/gpu glitch?

I see that Unhuman never mentioned receiving a new phone from Nokia, yet a few months later he was asking for help installing Nitdroid on his phone. This implies to me that he probably solved his problem and it probably wasn't caused by irrevocable overclocking damage. Unhuman, maybe you can clarify this, because I'm just guessing.

My N900 was never overclocked. I run power kernel, and while I've been meaning to overclock, I haven't had a chance to get around to it.

Of course, this is me talking about my issue, not sure if it's relevant to the rest of the thread, since I honestly don't recall the progression of discussion in this thread between the original post and the bit where the issue similar to mine came up.
