queen beecon day & night,,updating or image not found

This was the first thing I wanted on my new n900 because it is amazing tbf.
it looks so good on the desktop and i was going to customize one of the themes around it,,,,,,,but unfortunately it doesnt work all the time and can therefore be either ugly displaying ni image or says that it needs to be updated and 5-6 hours behind,,,

does anyone have this working 24/7 because I would really appreciate input on how they managed it,,,or patched it up or w.e

thanks guys.. im going to research loads of things of n900 but this i want working really nicely :)

what happens if you click it, does it update and work then?

no. it just has the bee saying image not found and still says, 'need updating' in red letters. The randomly about 8 hours later either it will work when i click on it. or somewhere in between it decided to start working again.(updating every minute or whatever update setting i had it on).

basically it works about 30-35% of the time and im reliying on this as a practical application.

this in conjunction with sleep analyser, would make me a whole lot more productive. Im yet to try the sleep analyser but it looks pretty cool :P

any ideas then? :)

can you put a link to the snippet you installed it from? lots of us use beecon, but the snippets are all over the place.

i imported it onto mine and it's working fine. does your phone have 3G data or do you only connect to the internet with wifi?

no i have 3g data. when im in the house its connected to the wifi. when m out the house its on 3g data, im not sure if it chooses wifi over 3g in the house, one second ill check this then.

you may find you also get problems in about 16 hours.


ok i checked and im connected to 3g,,search interval-never and connect to wlan when available...still just a day night picture from about a day ago though

I just left it running a few minutes and it's saying "image not found" but when i clicked it, the image is fixed again in 3-4 seconds. When you click it, the image should re-download.
Only reason that wouldn't work is the @Click setting, it should say "yes".
Maybe the internet connection is unreliable, or maybe it's the website the image comes from. I'll leave it on mine and see if it has more problems.

i think he tried that, and i don't understand what problem you guys have.
the image got ****ed up again so i clicked it and it's fine. that should always work unless the connection is not working.

yeh that works initially,,few days from now though it should mess up and wont work im guessing....its not just that it says image not found,,,,that was an issue a while ago and i havent seen that recently,,,although it can be annoying itsm ore the fact that it says it needs updating and it shows the wrong day/night image...although i think the image not found isnt dispaying aswell is because i had the settings as zero for the bee icon to show,,,,and the writing 'image not found is part of the little bee in the centre' if you understand what im saying..''.:p still sucks though ,,i want this working,,,


although i did actually run into a guy who had a private blog on google images who had a similar thing working whereby everytime he unlocked his phone it quickly flashed a day/night image...i may have to resort to spending some time searching for that guys blog again,,and im only 90% sure it was on the n900 :(

maybe the beecon settings or the desktop widget settings got messed up then.
instead of just uninstall/reinstall you might want to do apt-get remove --purge queen-beecon to actually wipe the settings, but i'm not sure that's the correct way to do it.

hmmm mine stopped working now. If I try to get the image at http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/showsunmap.php from fennec or microb it is not downloading fully and says the connection is reset, but it works fine from my desktop over the same internet connection.

I switched the n900 connection to use the 3G data again, and it works fine.

I switched the n900 connection back to the wifi, and its broken again.

i just checked the website too. it must be the website and that no one is updating it properly.
its a shame, there must be another website on the internet which could source the same image and we could just replace it in the code for the snippet.

i just realised i have to configure the settings on the website. so ill try it on the meamo browser and firefox one on the phonne

your right though I just told my n900 to switch to WLAN automatically and it updated itself. So it would make sense for me to investigate a desktop switch to switch between wifi and 3g.

i don't understand what's going on, i ran wget at the command line and it says:
read error at byte 6986 (connection reset by peer). giving up.
the browser works fine with that image if i go to the html page rather than linking directly to the php script.

try protesting on your own. you might find a helpful individual.i call it the sharkattack.

but other than that, search for wget and its official page the command line is different from what nononoyes has on his page. the one that worked for me had a dash - in it ,,,something like sudo apt get-wget install. but it worked. and so far mine is working fine,,,possibly a combination of creating a username and personal settings in firefox n900 browser or maemo for the timeanddate.com page and installing wget correctly :)

I'm just reading this for entertainment and hardly know what you guys are talking about, but it sounds a bit like timeanddate.com doesn't like you downloading this image so frequently, and is temporarily blocking your ip address.

This would explain the difficulty in replicating the problem, and also why it works from some connections and not others.

Or it could be something completely different...
