Help me!! USB Connection
 

Hello guys, Ive searched this forum but i didnt come across my problem. I am unable to connect my n900 as mass storage or pc suite.

let me explain a bit of history:

I accidentially deleted some system files after which the fone couldnt boot up.

I reflashed it using the latest firmware (not the eMMC as i have alot of data on the Mass Storage) (i flashed it on a windows 7)

After the reflash everything was fine and i could connect via USB to any pc and my n900 got easily detected.

Then all of a sudden I am unable to connect at all. All the windows 7 ive tried when i connected the pop up menu which asks u to connect as mass storage or pc suite doesnt shows up and on windows it shows "the device you have attached has malfunctioned"

After sever attempts of changin usb wire and trying to connect it on a Mac did not work out as the option never popped up on the fone and it did not even charge when the fone was on but it charged normally when i attached it with usb when turned off.

I then using the application manager updated to Power kernel then for once it started showing the the pop up menu on the phone but when i selected mass storage then nothing happened at all. i tried dis connecting and connectiong again but still the same but it some how started charging but still no connection to the USB.

Please help me as to what i am doing wrong or what is wrong with my phone.

I would really appreciate that. And I am not an advance user so please a complete guide would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have full access to MyDocs on N900? No dud files or data loss?
Could be a bad emmc.
Maybe just need a check/fix, use:
fsck

Assuming you have a wireless connection you can transfer data from your n900 to win 7 pc with a program called winscp.

Transfer all your important data, backup your contacts and applications and reflash the whole lot properly

Thank you all of you for the suggestion....but now I have run into a greater problem and I do not know if i will be able to recover from it or not....so here it goes:

My friend installed filebox on n900 and then deleted some files from the mydocs folder then he started deleting some files from the user/home folder (old applications data that was there after the flash. he deleted those sayin its safe dont worry)

then he uninstalled the power kernal and turned the phone off.

after that..the phone didnt turn on for once and when ever i put in the battery it goes into a loop...shows nokia bright screeen...blank screen...shows nokia dim screen....blank screen....shows nokia bright screen....all this is combined with a slight vibration from the fones's viberator....anyhow.....i tried various instruction on how to connect the phone in flashing mode...the normal way (keep pressing u and then attaching the usb) and the trouble shooting way as well (plug in the usb and everythin with battery removed and then keep pressing you and insert the battery)

Non of these methods work now...everytimg i do this the message on laptop shows "the attached device has malfuntioned please remove and relplace the device"

and the flasher 3.5 keeps on waiting for the suitable device to connect.....

Then i tried to flash it on a Mac...same status .....Please guide me as to what i can do ...if i can do anything....or my phone is dead for ever..i have not tried it on a linux system yet...but i will do so...do you think it will work with that?

Is the charge of the battery sufficient? It must be propperly loaded. Do you think your USB is working at all after all the trouble you described?
The removal without reflashing left you without a kernel. Which is disastrous!

Well Now i Know that it is disastrous.......well sometimes i feel my usb port might be faulty but its working fine as each time it is easliy connected ....but showing that the device has malfuntioned message on windows....Also yes batter is full i charged my fone fully just before this all happened...so yea...!..is there any way this disastour can be reverted?

One more thing...this malfuntioning thing was happening before uninstalling the power kernel as well......and i couldnt not charge or connect to pc using the USB cable...but the phone could be easily charged with the wall charger....so..any ideas?


edit: this same malfuntioning started happening when i recently reflashed my phone...(without the power kernel) the phone could be connected easily in mass storage mode and pc suite mode after the flash...but then suddenly it stopped connecting altogether...(not even the pop up showed up to select between mass storage mode or pc suite mode) but then i installed power kernel and it showed me that option to select mass storage or pc suite...but then when i selected either option...the same msg on windows came..."this device has malfuntioned...blah blah"

I am under the impression that flashing from a linux pc is not as much prone to errors than trying the same from within windows. I might be wrong, but i would give a Linux-Live-CD with a Debian or Ubuntu flavor a try. There is pretty good instructions in the wiki http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware about the commands in a linux session.

Looks like your usb is starting to go off... and now you did a mistake that can only be fixed with a reflash using the (now maybe almost broken) usb...

I don't see a fix outside of:

1)Taking the fone to some nokia care service;

2)Opening and fixing the usb yourself AND trying again;

you know tha bad part is..I am in Singapore and n900 was never officially released here ...So i do not know if NOKIA care ..would care enough to help me out...:( ...damn!! but i will try def...thanks

if you uninstall power kernel through Ham you effectivley delete the kernel from your phone, you should of used the unistall power kernel package.

Bad mistake to make, i know as i did the same without thinking!!

There is an art to getting the phone into flash mode and re flashed, it took me 5 or 6 attempts to get it right

Download flasher 3.5
Download the currect kernel version & move to the flasher application folder
Type command as stated in the wiki, DONT execute the command yet
Ensure battery and USB cable are out of N900
Hold U on the key board, replace battery, insert USB and start phone - DONT let go of the U key until the nokia logo is visible but against a black screen, this means the phone is in flash mode
Execute the command previously prepared.
A kernel reflash message should return complete within 10 seconds.
Unplug your phone and reboot
Job done

ok...after tryin what you said (@Raif)....I am seeing this happen...although I am still trying it under win 7 enviornment....

the phone goes to flash mode (it did go to that mode before as well...dim Nokida sign with usb in corner)

but what is different this time is...although i still get the same message as usb device has malfuntioned....one new thing on the phone...the Yellow LED turns on after few seconds and stays on ....

oh and yea the flasher keeps saying....waiting for suitable device...

ok tried it in linux as well...but still the same situation..the flasher keeps on waiting for the suitable device....so may be the mini usb port is blown or somethin ?

Use flasher as mentioned above and just flash the kernel, boot your phone.
install DROPBOX and upload all your files to DB and just DL the files.

WHY DON'T YOU TRY this...
Jam in a SD card, copy all files from MyDocs to SD and keep going untill all files are back on your computer? :D :)
Reflash and check your usb port.
The damage may be done, but, you should/could have filed off the two prongs on your usb charger and usb cable. Without these, it won't drag and rip your usb port.

thank you for the suggestion...but in my 2nd post I explained that my phone is not starting up at all now so I do not know how to copy files....without my phone booting (i tried the above method in windows as well as linux...it doesnt work for me :(...) now it still keeps showing waiting for suitable device...although on phone it shows its connected to USB and is in flash mode...so i do not know where the problem lies....

thank you everyone for your suggestions...and thank you Raif...i got the phone working now...phew...took me a long time...but it worked finally...now i will first fully charge my phone then try to fix other problems with it...once agian..thanks alot..everyone..!
