Can I lock my folders by password

As long as I remember I have always had Nokia phones.. Now years later Im a N900 holder and I love this pc/tablet/phone/media player but the one thing I dont like is my folders not been able to lock on lets say a drop down menu from the folder... I have pictures and stuff I dont want to share with the world... at the same time I get people saying lets have a look at your phone... then im on tender hooks as the press away trying to work the unit...

Is there a lock I can load that will do this? I want to lock photos, messages, and email. in fact everything on an indevisual basis if I can....surly there must be??????

Hey bro,

If im correct this phone has linux in the background so... what you can do is make new folders where you want to place your pictures and videos. then make a file within the folder, lets say in the pictures folder called ".nomedia" without the quotes. and make sure that period is there in front of the name. dont make this file in the folder when you have pictures or any other media in it for precaution, or it can be erased. Add files AFTER you make the .nomedia file, not before.

this is why:

some versions of Android and the like have a glitch that if you already have files in the folder when you make this ".nomedia" file, it will wipe all the contents of that folder. that's why i say make the file in the folder and then add all the media you want.

after this is done you will have to access your media with a file manager of your liking to view your files. now your media will be hidden at least from your gallery view and what not.

I think u need to create a folder with a . in front of it so

.myfolder for example

this will hide it from the gallery and such but im not sure about password protection though you will have to wait for more replys

Other option is to use the app "AppLocker" from the repos. This app allow you to block the apps that you select with password. You can, for example, block the file manager and photos and well done, nobody can see your files. =)

This method works with common linux but not in maemo (at least, in maemo stock file manager) the folder "Documents" is called ".documents" and the file manager show it anyway, and the same with sounds. But that only happens with the stock file manager.

I had requested this a long long time back & there was no progress whatsoever.

1) use tracker-cfg to exclude specific directories from being shown at photo browser. then use file manager to browse the images
2) use truecrypt. mount it whenever you want to see the images, unmount when you've done with it

you can also automate this by doing the following:

truecrypt -k "" --protect-hidden=no <tc container> /media/tc
ossofilemanager
truecrypt -d

the first line will ask for your TC container password and then mount it to /media/tc

the second line will open the file manager

the third line will not happen before you close the filemanager, and will then demount all truecrypt containers

Using truecrypt isnt the easiest way to do this as there are no truecrypt frontends with a simple GUI for N900. Moreover, the OP wants an application locker along with features to hide images, etc.
Hiding images & media files is relatively easy as you just have to create a folder with its name preceeded by a dot (.)
For example, if you want to hide a video, create a folder with the name .name inside the original .videos folder of N900. This will hide the file from gallery and the user has to use alternative filemanagers like Filebox to view this.

Note that the OP wants his messages and personal data locked. This can only be done with an app like I requested.

actually, as stated by mooglez, I do use scripts for mount and unmount routines
I'm not sure about OP, but from my point of view, "encrypting" those data is sure much better than plainly "hide" data and have it easily accessed using other way around (think when you lost your device)

I'm not sure if I can just encrypt the whole /home/user using truecrypt and have it automatically mounted on boot (possible on windows and linux's truecrypt), basically having all sms's and settings encrypted as well. or just like what ubuntu and ecryptfs does

Re: Can I lock my folders by password

make a folder named "private" and the content of that folder, either a picture or video will not appear on your photo viewer or media player.

Create an ext3 partition on your SD card, move your private pictures there, then remove the SD card. Afterwards only insert your the SD card and mount it when you want to view those images and are sure no one else will be handling the device.

Just use truecrypt. Create a crypted file and when you wanna use it just mount it on /media so you will see it on standard file manager when you want like it is a folder and unmount it to hide it. Without password none else will be able to mount it back.
