Re: Firefox 4 Beta 5

Fennec is the code name for Firefox mobile. Just like how desktop Firefox has codenames like Shiretoko, Namoroka etc. and Mozilla was the codename of Navigator back in the Netscape days.

Beta 5 was released for testers some time ago, this is the Beta 5 for end users.

Fennec Beta 6 for testers is now available as a nightly download.

Have to agree. I like how it loads up from the start faster but still not as fast as microB (probably due to microB already being preloaded like said many times before.) Much, much better though already. I know whenever they finally get out a solid release it should be worlds ahead of microB (though the N950 might be out by then ;) ).

wow, the load up and rendering have certainly improved. I was like "wow!" when seeing how quickly this version has been loading some pages.

Any feedback as to mem/cpu usage? With previous versions I have had probs running any other programmes and answering a call can be hit or miss!

Is anyone getting the Sync feature working?

If I try to enter the username, password and sync key, it just doesn't seem to do anything. Nothing happens if I click either Cancel or Connect. There seems to be no way to even exit the dialog without killing Fennec.

Re: Firefox 4 Beta 5

Hi, I'm a Firefox/Fennec developer.

About names: The name "Firefox" is used for official beta and stable releases of the browser. For alpha and nightly releases, we use code names ("Fennec" for mobile, "Minefield" and other code names for desktop).

About versions: Mobile Firefox 4 beta 5 (version 4.0b5) was released last week (February 23, 2011). The new nightly builds have the version number "4.0b6pre." The "pre" means that they are not an official beta release. Instead, they are just development snapshots of the next release (which might be 4.0b6 or it might be 4.0, depending on whether we decide to do a sixth beta version).

I haven't seen this bug before, but I'll make sure to test it out again...

Does the "easy setup" mode work for you (where you enter a 12-letter code into desktop Firefox)?

You have probably installed this add-on:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/mob.../proxy-mobile/

The developer hasn't yet tested this add-on with 4.0b5 or later and marked it compatible. If you want to use it anyway, you can override the compatibility check using Beta Tester Tools (pre-installed in official beta releases) or Nightly Tester Tools:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/mob...ols-for-mobil/

Or you can set proxy options by entering "about:config" in the address bar.

Interesting! But, the name of the executable for the official Firefox Mobile release is still "fennec"; at, least, it is on my n900. (I'm still using Firefox Mobile 1.1, I've been wary about playing with the betas just yet.)

I think there is at least one similar bug report in Bugzilla. I think it propably happens only if you previously had the Sync add-on for Firefox 1.1 installed.

Anyway it seems it somehow managed to fix itself, and now it syncs. Not really sure what happened, is it using the configuration left from the older version.

Anyway I think it's important to test this use case where the user upgrades from older Fennec with the Sync add-on.

The GTK version is the one that we officially release and support for Maemo 5 (N900). The Qt version is still in development, not officially supported yet, but it will eventually become the official version for Maemo 6 / MeeGo.

I've heard that the Qt version is "faster" - but I haven't done any rigorous testing to know for sure.

There are repos here - use the "trunk" version for your language if you want to get Firefox 4 builds:

how do you disable the autorotate, where if you tilt your phone it irritating flips to portrait mode? I just want to keep it landscape, always.

I thought the "accellerometer.enable" switch in about:config would do it, but no. :(

mbrubeck 2011-03-21 03:30

Re: Firefox 4 Beta 5

Firefox 4.1 is not "out" - the current nightly builds are version 4.1a1pre, which means they come before the first alpha release of version 4.1.

Firefox 4.0 Release Candidate 1 has been built and will be published soon, and will hopefully be released as Firefox 4.0 soon. So the latest nightly builds are based on work that will eventually go into the next version. (We haven't actually decided whether the next mobile release will be called 4.1 or 5.0 or whatever.)

Nightly builds are development snapshots, not official releases. They always have version numbers that end in "pre." See my earlier comment about versions.

@geohsia
There is an addon that enables hover mode but it only supports android build atm. Author says maemo support is coming.

@qt vs. gtk question
qt is faster but mailto link handler and volume rocker zoom are broken atm unfortunately.
