Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
Don't ask me why I left my phone in the kitchen, but I did and somehow it ended up in a sink full of water.
So, I spent a lot of time drying it out, opening and closing the keyboard to try to get the water from behind there. After I felt comfortable with that, I put the battery back in and booted it back up. It seemed to boot fine, but the touch screen behaved erratically, with it having problems identifying touch on the right side of the screen. Then the screen would go on and off. Now, I can't seem to boot the phone at all. Do I now own a $300 paperweight, or is there some way I can salvage this. If not, do you think SquareTrade will honor the extended warranty on this? |
Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
If you're not comfortable disassembling it, the trick I have heard used often is to place it in a tupperware container full of dry rice. The rice will absorb the water from the phone. Leave it in the rice for 24 hours.
And never put the battery back in until your sure its completely dried out. |
Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
No mate! Do not put the battery back into a phone that was immerse into water and boot it up! How long did you spent drying the phone? You probably shorted a circuit.....I think that`s the end of it`s life.....You could put it in a bowl full of rice for couple of days before putting the battery back but now it`s too late :(
If you know somebody that is comfortable to dissasemble the phone and replace the required parts go for it. |

Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
if you don't have a bowl of rice, i suggest a drawer or cupboard, leave it for 48hours+ without the battery in. LET IT DRY NATURALLY! If you try to quicken the process with something like a hair dryer, you will only cause your screen to stop working altogether.

Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
Put it in a container of dry rice and leave it let it obsorb all the water!!! Leave it for a day at least!

Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
Well, he did say that he tried it a few times before it finally dried out and worked, so maybe I'm not screwed. I'll try the rice method.

Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink

Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
Get this
http://www.damprid.com/index2701.html and put your n900 and this in a big Ziploc for one night. It will be up and running in no time. Make sure your phone is switched off with battery out. I have 100% success rate with this method for reviving wet cell phones. |
Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
Hit her in the head with the N900 then do the rice thing...Hope your phone comes out of its coma bro.
(I was joking about hitting her in the head) |
Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
My wife recently drenched her 1 month C6-01 in her bag going to the movies. The phone couldn't work - phone could call out, but gets disconnected everytime. And I couldn't call to that phone. Sounds failed (even that Nokia start up tune). After some attempts, the phone totally failed and would not even start!
I removed the battery and blow dry the phone with a hair dryer from inside (careful not to get too hot - you might fry some circuits, and also since the C6-01 had metal casing you could fry your hands). I also tried leaving the phone in some rice (as recommended) for a couple of hours only, since it was already late in the evening and I just couldn't wait to see the outcome and fate of that MYR 1,000 phone (that's about 170 BigMacs). Now it's working without any problem. Thank God! Hopefully, your N900 will survive it. Let us know. |
Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
Went out and bought a bag of white rice (since we only seem to have flavored rice in the house) and now my phone is in tupperware. Hopefully it does the trick.
Just as an embarrassing note, I did try to boot the phone before reading the updates here and it did start the boot cycle, so I'm more than hopeful that it will work. In hindsight, I agree that it was kinda dumb to try booting it up so soon. |
Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
Now I have a question...after soaking the phone in rice, is it safe to consume the rice?
I only dipped the phone in a tray of rice, so it wasn't a lot to dispose off. But, what do you all feel? Would you consume the rice after using it to absorb moisture off an electromagnetic device? |
Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
hope the rice works for you.. next time make sure not to put the battery back in so soon after..
|
Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
Sorry to hear that but you made a terrible mistake and permanently damaged the circuits :( NEVER ever turn on a fully soaked electronic device without drying it properly with methods mentioned here ( rice container , heat , 24 hours battery out off etc)

Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink

Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink

For OP's case, he got a bag of rice and using a tupperware to dry his phone. Seems waste to throw away that quantity of rice. |

Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink

Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink

Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
Well, good news and bad news. The good news is that the N900 boots up fine and seems to behave normally. The bad news is that it doesn't seem to act like a phone anymore: I get no cell signal or recognition of T-Mobile's network. Any suggestions? (I did have the SIM card in another phone for today and it worked fine.)

As suggested, keep an eye on the battery or change it. |
Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
You might need to disassemble to clean it up in this case, as it seems that the mosture has already corroded some contacts.
It might already too late to dry it up but if you wanna do, use silicon gel and put them with your N900 in an air-tight container for a day. Silicon gel is strong enough to extract the mosture inside the layers of circuits. Silicon gel can be easily found in all shops selling professional cameras. Howeve, beware of the fact that silicon gels will change from blue to colorless(thus make them ineffective) very quickly if you expose them to normal room environment. So make sure put them into an air-tight box after the package is opened. |
Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
Oh wow... sucks to hear man.
But let's be honest... maybe it was a hint that you were paying more attention to the N900 than your wife. Shameful. All jokes aside, I hope it straightens up for you though man... |
Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
Not sure if this will work, but how about (gently) rubbing the SIM contact with a pen-eraser? Since you mentioned only network is not registering, it could be some contaminant on the contact points?

Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
Check /var/log/syslog - see if there are any CMT errors, or what errors you see there.

Right now, I'm going to charge the battery for a little bit (since it was almost dead) and I'm going to leave it open for a bit. Not sure what else I can do here... |
Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
Put a mast on it and set it asail hehehe it will take to water like a duck haha.

Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
I feel bad for suggesting this, but in case there's permanent damage and you don't want to fix it (due to cost or something else), you could still salvage the usable features of the N900.

Bummer about the water damage to the N900. Rice has worked for me in the past but of 3 phones I got wet only one ever made a full recovery. Strangely enough it was an old nokia. |
Re: Help! Wife accidently dumps N900 in sink
No further luck in getting the cell service working. Barring any other suggestions, I'll probably eventually contact SquareTrade to see if they will honor the extended warranty on it. I'm not counting on it, tho.
In the meantime, I'll use it like a PDA and use my backup phone as a phone. It will suck not having internet access when I want it, tho. |
