Which GPS receiver do you use with Maemo Mapper? +Non voice nav question
 

Just got the 770 through Woot. Got to tinkering with Mapper and it looks sweet :) . Which bluetooth GPS receivers do people use? How does it work for you?

OT Question: Is there a way to see(read) the directions or is voice nav the only choice? (This is after downloading the route and loading it onto the Nokia?)

Holux GPSslim 236. Not the most compact model they have but works great. USB and car charger included.

I use the i-Blue737, and it works perfectly and performs well. It's available quite cheaply on eBay.

i-Blue 737 and a recently purchased 757. I can't recommend the i-Blue receivers highly enough. Amazing sensitivity (I even get good signals indoors), I don't take it out of my pocket most of the time. Incredible battery life, and great build quality. The chipset it uses is one of the best on the market.

While I'm here, any word on 5hz support for MM? i-Blue just release a 5hz (versus 1hz standard) version of their 737. The increased resolution will improve tracks a lot, which would be really nice for a lot of applications.

Holux M1000. 60 bucks (US) and every review I looked at before buying showed how accurate it was. I get between 15-17 hours on a charge and it acquires satellites in under a minute. Highly recommended.

Yes - directions pop up on the screen (in the upper right corner) as you approach them. The "as you approach them" part means that it requires a GPS receiver. Alternatively, you can tap on a waypoint to see its description.

Appreciate the replies, just picked up an I-Blue 737@Amazon.

Its too bad about the directions, the shortest route isn't always the best in NYC. It'd be nice to review them beforehand.

The route itself is visible as lines drawn on the map. It is the "directions" (things like, "Turn left at Main Street") that only pop up (and can be spoken) as you approach them. Oh, and I was wrong about being able to tap on waypoints to see their descriptions; the code is only there for POIs, not for waypoints - an oversight on my part, which I will fix in a future version.

And the routes are from Google Maps and thus (I think) are based on a "fastest route" algorithm, not a "shortest route" algorithm. Of course, Google Maps doesn't always give you the "fastest" route, but it tries...

I have noticed that Google Maps have recently introduced a great feature which allows us to easily modify the route "Customize your driving directions"

It appears to add modified route information in the From/To location data fields when we use this feature in web page to drag an drop changes to route. I have not tried but imagine we can "cut & paste" additional information in GPX Get directions fields to get the alternative route into Maemo Mapper?

Learning more about Maemo Mapper each day and really appreciate the built in the capabilities!

That is actually a cool feature in google and it works with GMapToGPX feature which can be imported into maemo-mapper (Make sure to select "Track" & "Full").

But you can do something similar in maemo-mapper by:

1) Click and hold on the screen until a menu pops up, select "Location", select "Add Route Point"
2) Now click and hold on the screen at a different location of the route you want to travel and select "Location" and "Download Route to..."
3) At the pop-up screen select the radial button "Use End of Route" and click "OK"
4) Continue step 2 until your custom route is built.

I did the above to build alternate routes to work since the main route is routinely a highway parking lot!

Holux GR-231. Got it cheap from a buddy, but it seems to take a while to acquire a signal. Decent battery life at 9 hours. Not bad, but you could probably find better for the same money.

i wooted the 770, too. it rocks. on ebay, i picked up a nib NOKIA LD-1W bluetooth antenna for $50 (current model is the 3W). then, i used the maemo bt-plugin to snare the MAC address (http://770.fs-security.com/maemo-bt-plugin/) and tether, and installed maemo mapper. i'm surprised at how easy everything went together.

Pharos gps that comes with MS Streets and Trips, with the bluetooth adapter. Works great.

I got a Unitraq BT-5 GPS receiver (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId=BT-5&cpc=RECOM) last week and played with a lot over the weekend and it works very well. The one problem I have is that if I put the cover on the Nokia 770 or restart Maemo Mapper, I need to power cycle the GPS unit.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?
