My dream linux device
I am a heavy daily user of N900, mainly using it as a "ssh" client to admin my linux server. I am searching for a dream linux device and if you know any existing or soon to launch product , please tell me!
. >= 4' screen . can type 'ESC', ~, | , <, >, `,^ . preferably same or near form factor of N900 . phone call support is not necessary . Must support linux like Maemo, Android is not suitable. SSH experience on android and symbian device (like E7) is too painful. . UMPC /MID like machine on the market is too large for me, and they generally use GMA 500 which is rather cumbersome to adjust screen brightness. |
Re: My dream linux device
I'm not too sure of they're newer models, but the hardware itself should be supportive of Linux. I know that with the initial models there was pretty solid support.

Oops, sorry, I guess that's a GMA500 but it's the first thing to pop into my head.

Re: My dream linux device
to get 'ESC', ~, | , <, >, `,^ on hardwarebuttons you can change the keyboard layout

Re: My dream linux device
OQO is a very powerful device. I once use a similar MID called AIGO. I used PUTTY SSH client under windows but the 5' screen making the keyboard too large to type fast.
Later I found that N900 let me type much faster and it's XTERM program is more fast, smooth, and stable than Windows. Network connections break unpredictably on Windows and it's rare on my N900. |

Re: My dream linux device
I have Esc mapped to Shift+Fn+Backspace, | mapped to to Shift+Space, and <, >, ^, and ` all mapped to various Shift+Fn+Letter combos. I typed this from my N900, without having a skip a beat so to speak to enter those keys. Search "remapping hardware keyboard" on the wiki.
Can't help you with the other bits though. |

Re: My dream linux device
Looks like some other UMPCs include the MobileDemand T7000 and the Viliv N5.

Re: My dream linux device
what are you missing in the n900 that your "dream device" would have? Besides a larger screen anyways.

Re: My dream linux device
The ESC | and ~ 'keys' are on the bottom row of my screen....
Like ctr and tab pgup and pgdn. Can't remeber how I added those... It is somewhere on the forum. |
Re: My dream linux device
Bring on the n1000 :P all i want is n900 with more processing power. sounds like that what u want to.

Re: My dream linux device
Xterm bottom line is in gconf!
root@Battlestar:~# gconftool-2 -s /apps/osso/xterm/key_labels -t list –list-type=string “[Tab,Esc,PU,PD,|,&]“ root@Battlestar:~# gconftool-2 -s /apps/osso/xterm/keys -t list –list-type=string “[Tab,Escape,Page_Up,Page_Down,bar,ampersand]“ |

Yes and a little bigger screen. Say 4-5 inches. This would make, for example, much of the software available on easy debian more user friendly. Regardless, I really like the n900 because of the many applications and improvments made by this community. If it can be taken up a notch in performance and screen size with all the currently available applications I would be happy! |
Re: My dream linux device
Yes, N900 is very good now. Even the Milestone 2 with keyboard and 3.7" screen, I feel N900 is much better. For Nokia E7-00, it is too big, and the keyboard feeling is not good. The "touch and feel" of the keys on E7-00 is not good.
My dream machine is a N900 basically keeping a large part of the current design, with a bigger but resistive touch screen. 4" is suffice. Preferably keeping the same keyboard keys touch and feel, add a row of keys to type symbols and a ESC key . I tried many devices like E7-00, Milestone 1 &2, Sony Xperia with keyboard, ... none of them give me the pleasant feeling of the N900 keyboard. I just type very *fast and blindly* with N900 and seems no similar products on the market! |
Re: My dream linux device
How about the pandora ?
I am still waiting for mine, but should be in my hands soon. Seems to meet your specifications. http://www.openpandora.org/ |
Re: My dream linux device
For what it is worth, OQO is a dead company.

<br /> Pandora meets his requirements, but in comparison to n900 is quite bulkier. It's a very nice umpc, though. Its linux distro has still some rough edges, but you can run debian already on it, both natively (though tweaked) or in a chroot. Having both, I still prefer to perform my daily activities on my n900. |
