Maemo 6

I heard maemo 6 will be released before Meego. Anybody heard anything about this? Or is it just a rumour like the rest of the crap thats been said. Will Maemo 6 even be available for the N900, as an update? It's a very odd move by Nokia as I don't see the point, they have Windows Phone for the mainstream crowd, and Meego for those that like there freedom, but why Maemo now? Supposedly the API will be compatible with Meego 1.2. if you want the source just pop maemo 6 in google news. the sites don't seem that well known so it could be like the 1.4 rumour

Nothing official. Just from my memory what I remember reading somewhere.

As I know Maemo 6 aka Harmattan will be released, only marketing is calling it MeeGo. It still good old Maemo under the hood... with deb and other things.
It will be compatible with MeeGo, but you'll have to work around things if you want to install things from the MeeGo repositories.
It should come out by the end of this year... and as it looks like it will be the stepchild of Nokia, just like the N900 was...
Will it be available for the N900... will have to wait and see.

Hate to spoil your hopes but by the end of this year the N900 will be well and truly buried by Nokia as they will have moved on to newer hardware all round than the N900 has.

No such thing that i am aware of Maemo 6 and i am sure many will say the same, even Nokia !.

Have to rely on this community i sadly say as Nokia has already proven that there is currently nil support for our N900.

It's pretty official, even Nokia said so.

Yeah, it's not like they're releasing a Nokia-developed version of MeeGo for the N900 or anything.

Oh, wait...

Seems like you get your maemo news from engagdet. ;)
Harmattan=Maemo 6 has been meant to be found inside the first "meego" phone from Nokia since the start. Nothing new there.

Search for this forum and you will find hundreads of threads all the way to the second day of MeeGo announcement where the harmattan still being in Nokia's first MeeGo device was said. Couple of months before the WP announcememt it was speculated that Nokia would jump straight to MeeGo core rather than using harmattan that was announced in 2008 and parts that MeeGo handheld UX has taken from harmattan.

Most people don't seem to anymore even bother to keep repeating this in this forum.

Because newbies with short attention spans and a lack of Google-fu keep being born.

That made me laugh, but probably closer to the truth than we might like to think. Explains a lot if they have no idea what they are doing, eh?

But hey - I agree, what is the point? We had this discussion a week ago. I'm waiting till next month, as I was told by somebody here in this forum that there will be a MeeGo user release for the n900 in April. So, I am holding my breath. ;-)

They already have, they have dropped support for it and passed that to the community, hence the CSSU!

Then why didn't Nokia also pass on all the closed components to actually enable the community to re-write the OS?, because without this happening it will never be complete and will also probably be dropped for a newer more up to date device in the future.

Re: Maemo 6

The community is doing a great job at keeping the N900 alive & kicking...
It's highly doubtful Nokia would hand over the closed source components of Maemo 5 to the community..
But i don't think this will stop the CSSU team as i think MAG is already working on a Qt-rewrite of the Media Player so If this can be done then surely the others are also possible although slightly difficult...

Excuse my ignorance, but do we need the closed source?
