Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
Here we go again, hey are you in that prison the yanks set up? lol.

Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
...and so it's released. Can be found at their site: http://firefox.com/m
EDIT: They've done something wrong this release, it's pretty damn fast. There's still some lockups(like while loading 9 tabs at once), but generally it's nice. |
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
GODDAMIT he's right !!!!.
|
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
This is a softlink to RC1.
Nothing to see here. |
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today

Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
nothing is comparable to microb browser, IMO. I tried all of them out there and just end up un-installing them, now i just stop trying..:)
MicroB browser is the best, it handles all websites you throw at it including Banking websites. |

Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
You're right, its better than previous versions, but it's not MicroB, however we have another not-that-bad alternative now.
|
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
I have had MicroB choke on some web sites. For example, it doesn't like Verizon's new web mail. (Well, nothing really does)
|
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
Blah. I've had it with Mozilla and Firefox in general. The latest stable one, that they provided to us, was pos. Laggy, unresponsive, resource-hogging pos, if we're specific. If I recall right it didn't even have portrait-mode (though that might've been fixed later on) and no keyboard.
And yes, I've tested this new one, it is like that as well. Thankfully there's still Opera, which is ironically better in beta than what Fx is in stable. :D |

The correct one is named Firefox 4. |
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
The link at http://firefox.com/m attempts to install Firefox 1.1. What's up with that?

And whats that stupid zooming thing that happens with FF when you go to enter text in a box? I can't bear that, it normally takes about 2 seconds to zoom as well. Firefox Sync was the only selling point for me. That was great....until it stopped working altogether. |
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
Of course Maemo 4 compatibility is gone.
|
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
A shortcut icon is apparently not included. It's using the generic blue square. Speed seems on a par with 1.1
|
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
Shortcut will appear after a reboot.
Also, it looks like it has made it on to Ovi Store too: http://store.ovi.com/content/26002?c...a=applications |
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
Ah this is bloody crazy, can they not get nowt right blimy.
|
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
i have install this firefox 4 by upgrading the beta version but still the latest one is called fennec on my n900...
as i see the installation log i see... fennec 4.0~beta 5 replaced by fennec 4.0.... tested the latest version n yes far more faster than beta.... between microB-firefox-opera....well there all have they own advantage...it depend to the user to use which one they prefer the most.... |

Does this mean that they have got it right? as in "not get nowt"..if I were you I'd steer clear of northern. ;-) |
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
Does this support flash???If not, then MicroB is still the best bet and Opera next to it.....
|
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
Installed through terminal and version showing up as 4.0b13-pre is this correct?

I already had firefox 1.1 installed (got it from OVI). I also had the ovi & mozilla repos enabled, from when I did that install. Got no indication of any updates available, so when I saw the news of V4 on "The Register" today, I followed the link to the mozilla website and clicked on the maemo download. This added a new mozilla repo, and then tried to install v1.1 (again) for some reason, so I cancelled. I then remembered that I'd originally installed via OVI. I went to OVI store and checked firefox - sure enough, it is now offering "Firefox 4 for Maemo". I clicked to download it and this brought up app manager - but did nothing further. I then uninstalled my existing ff and tried again and this time it offered to install firefox 1.1 (again). I then disabled the OVI repo and the old mozilla repo, and tried to download via the mozilla download link again - but still no joy ... after getting the "mising package" for fennec, I re-enabled the ovi repo and yet again got offered v1.1. I finally found the V4 .deb on the mozilla website (as per Travla's link), downloaded that and it installed fine. Reckon I wasted about two hours farting around with the app catalogs, and removal/install attempts in the ever-speedy App Manager. grrr. Finally fired up the new firefox browser only to find it is at best "meh", particualrly after having played with Opera 11 for a couple of weeks. Sooo not worth the effort I'm afraid, it starts so slowly that I lost the will to |
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
So i am using right now the latest (today's) beta and was trying to do mod the serach engines, like it's said here But that doesn't work. Have anybody tried this yet. If yes, is there any solution to that problem?
|
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
Why don't they put it in the normal repositories ? Why all this downloading through their website?
|
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
Mozilla does this because they know us N900 users are command line junkies who will compile code from last night's CVS tarball, grab the bleeding-edge versions of obscure libraries, and upgrade the kernel with special patches just to have the latest and greatest program running on their DIY hacker device.
|
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
Hang on here we are talking about Mozilla right and as it is supposed to be a MOBILE version of firefox then it surely would be designed for ALL mobile devices not just the N900 soooo why have they not got it right? after all they are not exactly new to this lets face it !.
My comments still stand and especially for noobs but also for techies alike it would be more realistic if Mozilla at least made a true MOBILE version instead of trying to be clever and leave components that hog the search engine even before it gets off the ground and decides to give a search routine !. |

PS it is actually taking the peee out of Mozilla so try not to look too deep into words that are "lingo (slang)". |
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
Could someone explain to me why I can just install fennec 1.1? I just tried 5 minutes ago, and still I have /opt/mozilla/fennec1.1.
Could it be because I am not from US? |
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
it's slow and clunky on my n900...meh:/
|
Re: Firefox 4 Mobile: Release Today
I need to understand if I am the only user who cannot install it. Both firefox.com/m and ovi store are giving me fennec 1.1.
I saved on disk fennec 4.0 from http://moff.mozilla.com/latest/maemo/multi/ and it doesn't work. I just see grey on top of the screen, grey on the left and white in the rest of the screen. Can you exxplain to me? Is my phone broken? Shoul I reflash it? Thanks. |

I still just get the gray/white screen. The menu bar is missing. The button by the address bar brings up a drop-down menu, but nothing works. Have to end task as the close button does not work. I am wondering if I need to install from the command line, if this will keep the built-in app manager from doing the install. I try to avoid it like the plague, I use faster app manager. Oh well, I guess it's time to check out the Opera mobile version then. *sigh* |
