N900 useless, what phone?

My n900 stopped receiving service from at&t, and I'm using an old Razr 2. I'm debating on waiting for the n950, getting the htc inspire, or waiting for the samsung infuse. I'm not too techy but was glad i was able to learn some new stuff with my N900. I'm probably going to go with something more mainstream this time though.

No way is the N900 useless, why don't you learn more about what your mobile can do !!!!!.

Blimy what is in your head to say the N900 is useless?.

The phone part of the N900 stopped working, and without it it's useless to me.

You may want to look at LG Optimus 2X. I'm considering it as a transition between N900 and its successor.

If your N900 is useless, can I have it please. Even with the broken phone part :)

Then explain more about the fault and i am sure you will get the answers you need to get it to work again.

It's simple. It stopped getting service (no bars) almost everywhere. So since it was my main phone, and the phone part of it doesn't work, then I need a new phone. I already tried flashing it, didn't help.

Down to the Samsung captivate and Samsung galaxy s. The 4g phones were ruled due to some service issues. Any tips on which one is better?

Re: N900 useless, what phone?

Your just not giving enough information, i wish it was my phone it would be so interesting to find out what has happened.
Have you dropped it? has it got wet? is there a Nokia service centre beside you in LA?, you say you have tried to flash it so what images did you use and what was the result you got on screen?.

The phone part has stopped working is just about all you have said so how can anyone even get an idea as to what has gone wrong.

OK what do you want to do with this N900?.

I've dropped it more times then I can count. It hasn't gotten wet. I flashed it following this sites wiki. The things on the screen were right according to videos I've seen. Nothing else is wrong with the phone, just the phone part of it.

AHA now some truth from you, ok so have you taken it to Nokia care? if not yet don't tell them you dropped it and you might well get a replacement, what are you going to do?.

This didn't start after a drop. It just started randomly. No, I'm not going to take it to Nokia care, I took it to a friend's phone store though. If he can't fix it then I'm going to get a Galaxy S.

No, you can't have it for free.

Re: N900 useless, what phone?

I believe you flashed the right ROM, as flashing a ROM of lower version than the existing might disable the telephony function. I've that experience.

I still think Optimus 2X is better. Good luck to you.

Yes that is what i was thinking but the way your putting it is not easy to read, if he has flashed an older version of Fiasco then bingo you get problems.

This is why i asked Garen what versions did he use to flash the device with but he does not seem techy enough to understand nor does he seem to have a full knowledge of the N900.

Gareth we are only trying to help you and no i did not want to keep your device i only wanted to repair it and send it back to you.

You need to look carefully on this community and you will see the many problems people have but having said this it may well be you have finally dislodged something inside so i guess giving it to your mate can really help you.

Thanks for the advice, but I think I'll stick with the galaxy s, the Optimus is nice and stuff but I'm going to be using a lot of memory and the extra 8gb that you get with the samsung sounds nice. Plus it supports more audio/video files. Plus I'm not very techy so the dual core won't even be able to live up to it's hype with me.

They have the same memory size, I think you meant internal storage.

I'm looking at something new too, and i have to admit there is nothing in the market that interests me...
Holding out hope for a decent samsung galaxy s2 maybe or similar in the coming months.

Re: N900 useless, what phone?

I have a Samsung Captivate. To be honest, stock firmware isn't ideal and suffers from a bit of lag. But once you get either a lagfix (ie. Voodoo lagfix) and perhaps a leaner firmware (ie. Cognition, among others) then you'll love your Captivate.

Same for the Galaxy S. And both out of the box suffer from a bit of GPS issues too - both fixable.

Matters on what you want to do and spend.

Re: N900 useless, what phone?

I've said this over and over again : if you're going away from Maemo and you want the same "openness" as you get from it, then you might want to stick with Nexus-lineup. Nexus S is Google-phone which means, that you'll get the most updates and it's easy to root.

And to have even relatively good task-switcher install the Itching Thumb, I think it is in the Market. If you don't care about the "openness" then go for e.g. Galaxy S. Nexus S might be rebranded also, don't know under what name though. That's exactly why I follow only the pure Android-ones, e.g. Made with Google (aka Nexus-lineup).

Did you consider WebOS? Don't know about the current OS-version though but I'm looking very much forward to the Summer-release of the new HP Pre's with WebOS 3.

You said "amost enywhere", so does it mean that it works somewhere (where there is a very strong signal)? If so, it sounds like the internal antenna has been disconnected from the cellular radio. If you can you should try opening it to see if there is any loose connector.

This has been reported by several people, and happened to me as well. Reflashing without including any backup data was the cure.

EDIT: just read Mara's post. An intermittant problem could very well be as he describes (and he has solid experience there).

I had a feeling it was down to software but as i have not experianced this fault i could not give a proper answer save to re-flash but you seem to have hit the nail right on, well done Texy.

Question for you guys. If I have the $10 unlimited data plan on at&t, will they find out and change it if i get a 4g phone?

Re: N900 useless, what phone?

They may auto upgrade the plan once you go over a certain data limit. Did any of these fixes work?

Despite the abrasiveness of some responses, did you consider that some people may have been actually trying to help you through your N900 problems?

edit: galaxy S II isn't far way. might be worth holding out for that?

Re: N900 useless, what phone?

While this post is bumped, I withdraw my earlier recommendation on LG Optimus 2X. I just tried it at a roadshow, and I found it somewhat slower than many other android phones that are supposed to have inferior processors.

I dont know what went wrong with LG with this phone, but it surely fell out of my expectation. If I'd have to go for a dual core phone, it'd definitely not this one.

If you consider to switch to a device with main stream o/s, go for Moto Milestone 2 or HTC or whatever. Just not Samsung or any Korean; they might look nice but no confidence with Korean's tech & reliability. A personal opinion from personal experience.

Ok so I have no idea what the hell is going on right now. I've been trying to call my friend since Tuesday and he hasn't answered his phone. Idk whats going on with my n900 or my possibly new phone that i still haven't decided on.

@timothy korean electronics are okay but their phones are really disappointing, yep.

Re: N900 useless, what phone?

Ok so my friend finally called me back today. Apparently my screen wasn't as bright as it was supposed to be, and the speaker wasn't as loud. He fixed that stuff and tomorrow I'm going to the store to see if I will be needing a new phone or not. Kinda hoping I don't need a new phone at this point, only been like 2 weeks and I'm already missing the N900's multitasking. Only thing that I'm not looking forward too is ocing it again, getting nitdroid again and of course fixing the settings and downloading all the apps i had again.

Got my N900 back, works almost like its brand new. So no android phone for me for a while :)
