Installing application directly via xterm
Hey anybody can please help me installing application by using x terminal!
The application manager is quite slow down here..i have also tried faster application manager but it is not soo good..whn i tried installing few applications via fast application manager it first downloaded all the files taking so long time and then during installation..it jst told the app cant be installed.. So i think now to use x terminal to install application. .:) |
Re: Installing application directly via xterm
as root:
Code:
apt-get install <nameofapplication> |
Re: Installing application directly via xterm
Thanks for that..i tried doing that but everything is okay until theres come only
y y y only..is that being installed or what..i waited for minutes but it still continued |
Re: Installing application directly via xterm
o0 wut? Your going to have to copy&paste the output so we can see what you mean.
You have to press 'y' to say 'yes, install this application'. |
Re: Installing application directly via xterm
If the name of the application is rosebud you install it with
apt-get install rosebud You have to be root. Before you install anything you might get into the habit of running apt-get update (as root) It's a good thing to run, and it also gives you error messages worth noting. |
Re: Installing application directly via xterm
if its a large package it may take a while to install, not all of them give a detailed output, if you want to test have a look in app manager for a small package and try installing that through xterm, however getting the <name of application> bit right can be tricky if you dont know it.

Re: Installing application directly via xterm
Or alternatively you can press Ctrl+C to break operation, then click on the small icon that looks like a mouse pointer from PC, which will then allow you to highlight the text output in terminal. From there, once highlighted, press Ctrl+C (which is Copy), swap into the forum, open a new reply in this thread and press Ctrl +V (Paste).
Output. Delivered. |

Re: Installing application directly via xterm
A few things to check...
Connection Before you do apt-get, try a quick ping test by typing (as root) ping www.google.com or whatever ping-able uri you prefer. If it's very slow to respond it could be the connection? I'm not sure if you can ping the repository uri that the software resides in but if it's a ping-able uri and you're getting a lot of loss, well there's the problem! Repository When using apt-get I _believe_ the appropriate repository (i.e. the one containing the desired programme) must be installed and enabled in HAM, as opposed to F-ApMan or any other application manager. If someone would verify, I'd be grateful. Depends It is also possible that the software has assoc'd depends and libs that have not made it to the same repository as the software you're trying to install so the whole operation will fail. Install from local The other way you could install the software is to download it from the package page (maemo.org/packages for ones hosted here). I think F-ApMan has a facility for installing *.deb files already on your phone. Just remember where you save it! NB. This approach is only really suitable if the package does not have any uninstalled depends. Post back if you find out what the hinderance is/was... good luck |

Re: Installing application directly via xterm
Well... that would explain a lot. Also, had you pasted the output earlier people could've helped you faster - as there's two problems that cause that output, one being apt-get already occupied (by having an app manager open) or by not being root.

Re: Installing application directly via xterm
yeah actually its true..@Mentalist..i was also unable to install while the application manager was open..
