Earthlink free WiFi download now available

About a week ago, I ran across a thread (on these forums, I believe) pointing to a Press Release from Nokia/Earthlink, which said that Earthlink's new city-wide WiFi (in various cities) would be 'free' for N800 users.

At the time, I went to "Tableteer", clicked "Enhance", and then clicked on the "Earthlink WiFi" link to the right side of the screen.

Once I got to that page, I clicked on the link under "1. FREE Service"/"Learn More", but it brought me to an "Error 404" page on Earthlink/Feather WiFi's page (the link was actually a direct link to an "error404.html" page - it wasn't that the link was 'bad', they were pointing at the error page (presumably, because the page/site wasn't ready).

Anyway, I now see that it points to a 'real' page, and it's possible to sign-up for the free service and download the "EarthLink/Feather Connection Wizard".

I've done that, but haven't had a chance to try out the service. I don't know if it's really available yet (the EarthLink/Feather page says "January 2008", although their 'coverage map' for Philadelphia seems to indicate that it's at least partially running).

I thought I'd pass this info along, in case others had also run into the 'bad link' (error 404 page).

Please post here if you've tried out the service (let others know whether/not it's actually up and running).

No, various cities (I mentioned Philly because that's my local area).

According to their coverage map https://home.feather.net/feather/www/coverage_html , it looks like they have service in several cities so far (Milpitas CA, Anaheim CA, Corpus Christi TX, New Orleans LA, and Philadelphia PA), plus several more future/planned cities.

Their choice of cities is rather bizarre. Corpus Chrsti, seriously? No NYC!

Oh ho, wow I'd thought they'd never get that working.

I'm connected to FeatherSecure right now in Philly. Thanks for the update :)

I'm under a blue dot right now. I'll just have to be patient, I guess.

They had a link some months ago and I d'loaded the connection wizard. When I was in Philly I found their net but the N800 would not connect... Are you saying It's all good now Averox?

Phoenix would be nice also. We are the 5th Largest City in the US and the largest Capital of any city in the US with the 7th busiest airport and what some would say the next silicon valley because we host such companies as GoDaddy, Google and one of Intel's largest facilities. It seems as though we do not have a nerd shortage, but we always get overlooked. Maybe it's the heat.

Yep, it's working fine at the moment. You need to create an account at the Feather site. You can connect to any Feather or Earthlink AP and refresh your RSS feeds whether you have an account or not to either service.

The current APs available to me in my area are:
FeatherSecure
earthlinkwifi
FeatherByEarthLink
WirelessPhiladelphia (service provided by Earthlink)

With the exception of FeatherSecure, connecting to an AP and trying to visit a webpage brought me to a Feather site to log in. After logging in I was able to browse from any of the above APs so it appears there isn't any disassociation with the networks here yet. I'm guessing it logs your session and keeps it alive until you're inactive. I believe I read somewhere that it said after five minutes.

Pretty neat to have free wifi for the time being!

I have yet to receive an e-mail confirmation. Was that instantaneous? Can you log in to EarthLink's site from any browser to check your account?

Re: Earthlink free WiFi download now available

I started using it on my N800 immediately after I signed up and before I even got a confirmation email. The confirmatiomation email wasn't an immediate one either.

I can log into Earthlink's Feather site and check my account. No dice on the regular Earthlink.

Re: Earthlink free WiFi download now available

Well that appeared to be short lived.

Since about a week ago I haven't been able to browse using any Earthlink related services. Just brings me to a page saying to refill my credits. Tried making a second account to no avail. And I'm still using the old firmware by the way but this problem preceded the latest firmware so I don't think that's it.

What I'd really like to see is a Boingo Wireless Client for the N800. However, if Nokia has partnered with Earthlink, I doubt they have much incentive to do a Boingo client.
