[ANNOUNCE] Catorise PLUS - create your menu like you want

Hello,

I created the package "Catorise PLUS". It combine "catorise" and (a better version from) "Catorise GUI". You don't need anymore two package, that's enough alone. With this Application you can create your menu like you want. You can add, delete and edit categories and icons.

IT'S NOW AVAILABLE IN maemo-devel!
http://maemo.org/packages/view/catoriseplus/

OR

You can install the .deb file:

Code:

http://maemo.hinoarashi.de/catoriseplus/0.6.0.1/catoriseplus_0.6.0.1_armel.deb
Note
This package replace catorise and catorisegui! Your customized categories will be not replaced or deleted.

Note
When you create or delete categories, it takes a little bit. no panic! It depends not and the system does not crash.

And now! Have fun with it, I hope you like it.

Sourcecode

Re: catorise and catorise gui - create your own categorys

i wanted to delete the 'all' category but what happened was all the icons that were in the all category gets spilled out into the main app menu. It's as though the icons in the 'all' category had to go somewhere so it went to the main app launcher menu... so it's like all the other categories were still there but the apps from the 'all' category are alongside it too

Good work.

You could ask to be the maintainer of the packages in order to upload your new versions to Extras Devel.

thanks a lot for your effort,
can you try contacting the original maintainer to update the package ?
Incase you get no responce, you can make a new package and call it "updated catorise and catorise gui" and upload to extras-devel.

also,
where can the source of the modified Catorise Gui be found ?

It was fixed, please try the update (in first post). After update write in terminal (as root!):
Code:

/opt/catorise/catorise
or use save in catorisegui to reload.

wow. its like this community reads minds, or we share a global conciseness. i had just installed categorize a day ago, but uninstalled it because i wanted to make my own categories. its going back on.

Re: catorise and catorise gui - create your own categorys

excellent work... i've always felt that having that 'all' category makes the loading a litttttttle bit laggy....

Re: catorise and catorise gui - create your own categorys

Update for catorisegui

Code:

0.2.3
- the reload after adding or deleting was removed (it's too lame)
- checked that "name" is not empty and exists
- the names and icons from own categories are now correct
- used another method to inform the user
- you can now select from your directory a icon file.

Download is in first post.

The "highlight" is, you don't need to copy a icon file to the icon directory and write the filename in catorisegui. You can now select a file from your directory and that is copied to the icon path.

Re: catorise and catorise gui - create your own categorys

Good work, feurigel, thank you! It would be awesome if app list was sorted alphabetically. Second handy improvement would be implementing a search input.

Please, add a warning about deleting All category: after deleting it I couldn't start basic Maemo apps like Contacts, Phone, Pictures, etc., so I'm sure they depend on their own menu icon.

I restored my system from backup, but finding the actual reason was tricky: there were no error messages in syslog.

Yes, there are hideous bugs in Hildon Desktop which mean care must be taken when editing the freedesktop.org menu file.

Care which Catorise takes.

I suggest that people who want to go hacking around are familiar with disabling the reboot watchdog; happy with reflashing or can read Catorise's source and commit log to see why it does what it does.

Thanks for the report. I will look up once. Maybe can I fix this.

Otherwise, you can create the category like this:

Code:

Name: ai_category_all
Icon: app_install_all

Click "save" and it works.

Update for catorise

With this update for catorise, it works now correct with a deleted "all"-category. Now you can start applications like "phone", "pictures" and other.

Download is in first post.

Re: catorise and catorise gui - create your own categorys

Update (but not for application, only for installation method)

You can use the new .deb files to upgrade the original catorise from 0.8.2 and original catorise gui from 0.2. I hope that work fine.

For safety, please save the file "/opt/catorise/menu" before. Please tell me if it works.

Download is in first post. Sourcecode also.

I will ask the original authors, if they can update the packages on maemo testing.

Raise a bug containing a patch. I may ask you to change it if it doesn't conform to my coding standards or the implementation is sub-optimal and/or dangerous.

Jaffa 2011-05-30 18:47

Re: catorise and catorise gui - create your own categorys

BTW, your patches will need to be rebased against 0.9.0 which I've finally released. This keeps track of changes better to prevent unnecessary work when installing or upgrading apps.

Oh! A update, nice. (:
I will look up and try to adapt the patch.

Re: catorise and catorise gui - create your own categorys

Update for catorise

Jaffa released 0.9.0 and I adapt the features from 0.8.2.3 to 0.9.0. so 0.9.0.1 has features from 0.9.0 and can generate dynamic categories (like 0.8.2.3).

Don't forget!
It's a unofficially version. Try out! And hope that Jaffa gives a "OK"!

Update for catorise gui

The new version sort the application and categories lists now alphabetical.

ivyking 2011-06-03 00:27

Re: catorise and catorise gui - create your own categorys

thanks a lot ! your work is really appreciated.

below are a couple of suggestions/requests.

feature request 1 :

In Catorise Gui, can you please add an "Edit directory" button to allow the user to rename a directory or change it's icon without either deleting it first or changing the values manually by modifying the directory file.

feature request 2 :
(quite hard but useful )

can you please add a section, or a secondary list/tree to specify where the directories should be placed, and modify Catorise to build the sections accordingly.

this is useful for having sub directories within main directories.
ex.
Games
> arcade
> puzzle
> emulators

to achieve the above (ex. to add an emulators directory within games)
the games section in the hildon.menu should look like :
Code:

  <Menu>
    <Name>games</Name>
    <Directory>games.directory</Directory>
    <Include>
    <Filename>100boxes.desktop</Filename>
    <Filename>maemoblocks.desktop</Filename>
    <Filename>tuxrace.desktop</Filename>
    </Include>
    <Layout>
    <Menuname>emulators</Menuname>
    <Filename>100boxes.desktop</Filename>
    <Filename>maemoblocks.desktop</Filename>
    <Filename>tuxrace.desktop</Filename>
    </Layout>
      <Menu>
        <Name>emulators</Name>
        <Directory>emulators.directory</Directory>
        <Include>
        <Filename>vgb.desktop</Filename>
        <Filename>vgba.desktop</Filename>
        </Include>
        <Layout>
        <Filename>vgb.desktop</Filename>
        <Filename>vgba.desktop</Filename>
        </Layout>
      </Menu>
  </Menu>

emulators directory is to be created exactly the same way that it is being created now through Catorise Gui, just needs an addtional section to specify directory tree.

then catorise is to read that configuration, and place subdirectories within correct parent directories rather than all being inside the root directory.

Thanks in advance !

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Catorise PLUS - create your menu like you want

UPDATE

"catorise" and "Catorise GUI" are now in one package "Catorise PLUS". The update replace the "catorise" and "catorisegui" package, but don't replace or delete your customized categories.

With this update you can edit categories and it shows your selected icons.

And!
It's available in maemo-devel:
http://maemo.org/packages/view/catoriseplus/

Have fun! (:

Further to that, I'm thinking (perhaps) you should choose your own name, cos what you've done is pretty rude.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Catorise PLUS - create your menu like you want

I wanted the extended version of catorise and catorisegui in the maemo-devels, so that users can easily update this version. The name should represent only that this is the extended version, but continue to be based on catorise and catorisegui. The two programs were combined to not confuse the user, because the expanded catorise is not compatible with the current catorisegui, just as vice versa. I didn't want to steal your or reckdesigns work and put it under my name. I wanted to give users only the opportunity use this application, because many users need or want this features. I'm really sorry.

PS: Sorry for my very bad english... *cough*

I too am looking for this... Does this affect only stock PR1.3 or are CSSU users also affected by the "missing" WebOS launchers? ie. They do not appear in any category but show up in the "All" list.

if you are using old catorise then there a trick for this...
open catorise GUI...move atleast one application to different category & save it...now exit catorise GUI & go to menu...look at the all category..if NFSU icon isn't there dont panic just reboot...after reboot you will find NFSU icon on all category or it already in the games category...
if you want to move NFSU to different category then open catorise GUI & this time NFSU icon will appear in the catorise GUI menu...

Unless you have the CSSU, or some other modified hildon-desktop, you will suffer the bug Nokia introduced in PR1.3 with sub-menus in the applications menu.
