Mega list of 17,700 streaming radio stations!

FYI, In my search for a list of radio stations for my new 770 I figured out that this baby will play all the shoutcast stations, so head on over to www.shoutcast.com/directory/ for your choice of 17,700 radio stations, most of which are cd quality and commercial free!

For some reason, the Tune In button doesn't appear in my Opera browser on the 700. Anybody have any ideas? Thx

uncheck "optimized view" from the context menu. That happens on some sites, I'm constantly turning optimized view on and off depending on the site.

Thanks very much, weezedog, that did it; and I never would have guessed that was the solution. :)

also http://www.vtuner.com/ and you should be able to listen to any station streaming in mp3.

Does the 770 support mp3 right out of the box? I only ask, because when I go to shoutcast and click on "tune in", I get a "File Format Not Supported" error. The only change to my 770 since new, would be switching to 2007he.

Yes, optimized view does some weird stuff to some sites. It likes to make small buttons disappear and like on this site it makes the black text box disappear so you can't tap in any replies/new topics!" (OS2007HE, not sure if it does the same on 2006)
On the plus side, it can compress some wide sites so tthat you don't have to scroll horizontally.

Its a bug in 2007HE, you have to run a command in xterm with root access, see the 2007HE Bug Tracker here and view bug id 496. The command is in there. Onceyou run it, it will restore streaming audio.

Yeah, I found a post by fanoush that had the full code needed to make this work. Man I love this toy...now to get my phone setup as a modem, then I'll be in bliss!

Thanks for the help though.

If it's streaming in MP3, it's not a Windows Media station

Furthermore, why pay to license Windows Media files when absolutely everything you could ever want is available in or can be converted to the more open source media standards? That would be far more ridiculous than taking the time to convert your files over to a playable format.

No, not "absolutely everything"!!!!!?!!! We are talking about Internet radio stations and live streaming--there are some stations (MANY HUNDREDS actually) that are available in WM only, and therefore I can't listen to them on my Nokia.

I want to stream them live, but I can't.

I don't want to record-and-convert them--I remain surprised that no one has built a plug-in or something that will allow the Nokia to stream WM.

Re: Mega list of 17,700 streaming radio stations!

There are just as many net radio stations in formats supported by the 770...suck it up.

Either that, or figure a way to include support for WM codecs without getting your world rocked by Microsoft.

Sure you can with mplayer. I actually play WM files using the following at a shell prompt:

mplayer -vo null -cache 256 -playlist [URL of Stream]

Yes, it's not the cleanest method, but it works. Now I will say that sometimes it looks like mplayer isn't doing anything and if I hit enter on the virtual keyboard mplayer stops the process but doesn't kill it in which case i then need to type "fg" and then it streams and plays.

Windows Media formats are proprietary, and thus require some funding to get. They're not actually very expensive -- it's something like 35 cents per unit sold for WMA playback, encoding, and DRM support (10 cents for just the decoder), while mp3 costs 75 cents per unit for playback and encoding with aac ranging from 1 dollar and 75 cents per unit depending on production scale -- but Microsoft has had some rather unusual requirements in the licensing agreements in the past. Things like buggering with how open a client can be, or banning on anything that can play with their DRM.

Meanwhile, there are free softwares capable of dealing with WMA. Their licensing agreements make implementing them with the Nokia 770 or n800 inherently problematic (mplayer's GPL licensing is very open), but they are easy enough to install.

so how exactly do i enter the code? is it a single string?

I just got an xterm emulator and have been trying to input the code with no avail..just an error saying no key value? something along those lines

gconftool-2 --set /apps/osso/osso_media_server/demux_audio/application_x-icy --type list --list-type string'[application/x-,icydemux]'

scoured the boards and google, but couldnt find my answer

The only things I can see, are that you're missing the space after "string", and you left "icy" out at the end (x-icy,icydemux)
