Theres a Mosquito app in the repos which emitts a high frequency noise. Don't know if it will work on dogs though. It does come with a warning not to use on peoples pets so it might suit your needs.

Well since it is a bit of a brick you could use it that way ;)

Re: [Ideas] Sound or app that keep dog away

if it is such a problem what a about a dog whistle or something, something you can apply in a matter of seconds, instead of getting your N900 out, unlock and hopefully have an desktop widget to play sound.

or always having a pipe in your hand :D

whatever helps.....

Re: [Ideas] Sound or app that keep dog away

1. install mosquito hunter
2. find some anti-dog sound or wave modified frequency
3. install filebox go by root to /opt/mosquito-hunter, rename the anti-dog sound as the mosquito one/ones
4. voila! this should work as i tried with another sound file.
request: if anyone finds that anti-dog sound please share...

hehehe, well you need a very high pitch sound, normally ultra sound has an effect on dogs and cats, one of the reasons that ultra sound remotes didn't become to popular 25+ years ago.

The speakers in the N900 are pretty small, the same size as the N95, and just maybe we can make some software/program or "APP!!!" (really hate that word) that can make the n900 output beyond 25kHz

Nobody know the kHz of the sound we need?

Re: [Ideas] Sound or app that keep dog away

According to a quick google scholar search http://www.freepatentsonline.com/y2009/0038664.html

Indicates at least 20KHz

Another search seems to suggest that the range of frequencies smartphone speakers can output is only 300 to 4k to be exact (EX Smartphone audio engineer)

Source http://acapella.harmony-central.com/...requency-range

Sorry doesn't look good?

Why not get yourself some pepper spray or make your own and use this?

Re: [Ideas] Sound or app that keep dog away

Well lets just say it's 4KHz Max. Scaring a cat is one thing, you can cause a sensitive cat distress quite easily, hence the warning.

Deterring and angry/aggressive dog is a different matter, you would have to cause it discomfort, the dB level would have to be quite high. Probably more than the N900 can produce?

Well im pretty sure our N900 can produce beyond 4Khz as you stated it was for smart-phones in general, looking at the speakers i know that they can go way beyond that, an take it from someone that been building HiFi for over 10 years, and have also made a very small speaker set made by the very speakers that's in our N900/N95

But yes on the dB level, that's why i would say a dog whistle is a better choice, it hits the high note (that we can't hear) and like a normal whistle it does generate some dB

EDIT: Not saying that this is impossible tho

Re: [Ideas] Sound or app that keep dog away

I don't know if this helps:
Code:

gst-launch-0.10 audiotestsrc freq=440 ! audioconvert ! pulsesink
(needs gstreamer0.10-tools)

You can change the frequency parameter from 0 to 20000.

(Don't forget, you won't hear any sound while the silent profile
is active)

And a more advanced version:
(needs gstreamer0.10-plugins-good-extra
and python-gst0.10)

You'd be much better off with a dedicated unit, quicker and easier to operate.
Something like this.

Something like this.

Like i said ultrasound baby :)

Our N900 can do about anything, but for some purposes i prefer direct "tools", like flash light, the N900 has a good flash light function but compared to my DIY 50W Led flash light there is no question what i use, N900 will light up a path in front of me, my 50W lights the hole neighbourhood, and i really mean the hole neighbourhood.

Nice idea.
But I took
gstreamer0.10-tools_0.10.23-0maemo5+0m5_armel.deb
from there and my N900 (PR1.3.1) says that this is
incompatible.
So which is the correct version?

Edit: probably I should add that I do not want to scare dogs. ;-)
I am just coming here from

At 20kHz it should also keep little children away. :p

I have some /usr/lib/libgstreamer-0.10.so.0.22.0 installed.
