SOLVED!! Very bad browsing experience after firmware update!!!

So i installed the latest firmware, installed Skype, Python, etc and restored by backup.
Then i started to use my browser. It's horrible. GMail won't load, Youtube won't load, ITT won't load.
Also Erminig doesn't sync my GPE Calendar with Google Calendar which i think is also due to the browser.
Skype works fine, nothing has changed at the infrastructure (Wifi, internet connection, etc) end.
Also some sites load up directly, some after a few attempts, some never (like GMail).

How to troubleshoot? I can go back to the previous firmware, but i use Skype a lot. Does Skype work on the previous firmware?

Ton.

Hmmmm, I did not restore backup (I read a lot of the trheads before upgrading), but the problems of loading sites mentioned by Ton. appeared.

You want to see another application for the N800? it can fly through the window

just kidding. but frustrated.

Doing that now. Doesn't make a difference.

All Gmail, YouTube and ITT work fine for me... that's not to say that the Opera browser we have on the n800 doesn't have serious shortcomings with Web-2.0 sites.

Re: Very bad browsing experience after firmware update!!!

Very odd....i don't have problems with those websites you mentioned. Did you install anything at all before accessing those sites?

I'm also assuming your did a full download of the kernel file first (save to your computer's harddisk first...did an MD5 checksum check on it to ensure you indeed have the full and complete file) before you flashed the N800.

I reflashed my n800 again and i keep having the same result.
I'm actually thinking of going back to the previous firmware and give up Skype.
A Internet Tablet that doesn't allow you to surf the internet doesn't really make sense, does it?

Re: Very bad browsing experience after firmware update!!!

Did you do like luketoh mentioned? That was the same way i install my firmware, download first, then flashed device. When you use the flash wizard you will have to browse to the file or it will download from the net. I also added all the repos i could before installing anything. Installed python runtime as the first app then everything else afterwards. I have not had any issue with gmail or any web site yet. DO NOT RESTORE from backup.

Re: Very bad browsing experience after firmware update!!!

Quite simply, this was a very poorly tested release and one can't simply place the blame on some of the bugs that are cropping up on restore causing problems. I have flashed mine both with and without restore and I experience the "having flash enabled on certain sites causes the browser to crash to desktop" in both cases. Web browsing, while never quite up to being a desktop level experience, now has the feel of playing a game of Russian Roulette.

I think Nokia's backup app more or less just does an overwrite of the existing files with the ones that are backed up. If they had done any testing whatsoever of common useage scenarios they would have encountered the numerous problems people are experiencing with restore. I don't get the feeling that any significant amount of QA was done on this release. There are many, many issues with this release and due to their "embedded image" upgrade method, we aren't likely to see the fixes until the next big upgrade. Nokia really needs to switch to a package managed approach to rolling out interim bugfixes and doing upgrades. At present, I get very reluctant to go through the multi-hour process of doing an upgrade and manually rebuilding my system only to find that some really nasty bugs are present in the release along with all those nifty new features. The embedded image option should be there for if a user really screws something up.

Re: Very bad browsing experience after firmware update!!!

I'm at my work now and here the browsing experience is good. No problems with whatever website. Of course infrastructure-wise there are lots of differences between work and home. At home i use WEP, here i don't, AP's are of different brands, back-end network infrastructure is different, etc. So i have some troubleshooting to do at home.
What p*sses me off is that this only started to happen after i flashed the new firmware. I re-flashed twice. First time with the firmware local on my harddrive and immediately restoring the backup i made. Then i installed all my apps, yes, a multi-hour operation, specially when the whole world is using the repos, and then i found out about the browsing problems. Actually, i should have suspected something while i was not able to access the repos, but i blamed it to traffic.
Then i re-flashed with the image downloading using the update app and started browsing right away, without restoring my backup. Same story.

Now i have to figure out what is wrong, change AP's, change encryption configs, etc, etc.

Does anybody know what has changed in the networking part of the new firmware so i know where to look?

Ton.

Re: Very bad browsing experience after firmware update!!!

I guess it depends on the new poweroption of the wlan.

its typical when you switch from always on to powersave mode.

The powersave mode could cause problems with some Routers.

Btw, I have the same problem here.

Unfortunately its not possible do change this settings by the wlan options.

so, i will flash back to the older firmware

Just an idea: have you tried to toggle the 10mW/100mW setting for the Wifi-Power?

What does that do? Limit the power of the Wifi radio? How does that affect the browsing experience?
BTW, haven't thought of that. Will try when i get home.

same with me. it's almost impossible to use the tablet to surf the net at home since pages didn't load. it seems that the only page that loads is n800.tableteer.nokia.com though with some problems

Re: Very bad browsing experience after firmware update!!!

Maybe someone should open a bug in Bugzilla for this problem?

I wonder if this gconftool setting (discussed here) has now become the default in the new firmware? It might be worth trying the old value:

Code:

gconftool-2 --set --type int '/system/osso/connectivity/IAP/wlan_sleep_timeout' '1000'
And seeing if it makes any difference.

Hmmm, so then my statement of "everything working better when i am streaming a radio station while surfing" actually makes sense.
First thing i'll try when i get home. Update in about one hour.

I did it as root. Paste or type it into xterm. Now Youtube etc. works fine.

Glad it helped, and it should be saved across boots.

My advice would be to tweak the value down until you find the lowest value which still works - this will maximise your battery.

Someone needs to open a bug report for this and everyone experiencing this problem should provide details of their access point (make, model and firmware) so that Nokia can identify the problem/fine tune the settings. A GUI option in the Connectivity applet might be a good idea in future as a failsafe for anyone hitting this problem so they don't need to meddle with gconftool settings etc.

As per the mailing list item

Quote:

Unfortunately not all WLAN Access Points support PSM properly. So
reducing this timeout might create problems with certain APs.
it's possible that you access point is one of those that hasn't implemented Power Save Mode correctly - are you using the latest firmware? Maybe PSM is implemented properly in a later firmware.

The aggressive settings work just fine with my Linksys WRT54GS access point, but it would be helpful if (once a bug exists) that you all mention your access point details in Bugzilla so that Nokia can work around the problem in future, either by blacklisting your access points (they will default to 1000ms) or adding an "advanced" Connection GUI option to increase the timeout back to 1000ms for those access point connections with dodgey PSM.

Re: Very bad browsing experience after firmware update!!!

I did some testing with my Zyxel 660HW ADSL/WLAN router (latest firmware) and loading frontpage of uk.youtube.com

wlan_sleep_timeout

Works: 1000, 500, 400

Won't work (just doens't load page): 200 and 300

Rider 2007-07-09 19:07

Re: Very bad browsing experience after firmware update!!!

Works flawless with my Linksys WRT54GL too.

I use the Tomato firmware on my Linksys, and digging into the settings, I noticed that it is indeed possible to fiddle with the PSM mode and thus make it incompatible with the N800.

People with broken routers may try to find out if they can change some settings.

Hey guys,

Can anyone explain me how to set this wlan sleep time? I found out I need xterm but also read something about wlancond from osso. I really searched for like an hour or so but I can't figure out how to set it. I hope someone is so kind to explain to me how to do it and what I need and where to get it.

Thanks!

Just open xterm and paste this command at the prompt (all on one line)

Code:

gconftool-2 --set --type int '/system/osso/connectivity/IAP/wlan_sleep_timeout' '200'
Replace the value '200' with something bigger that works for you eg. '400' or '500'. The old 3.2007.10-7 default was '1000' (or 1000ms, 1 second), the 4.2007.26-8 default is probably somewhere around '200'.

Smaller values should result in improved battery lifetime as the WiFi radio will timeout (switch off) more quickly, but have it too low and you will experience communication problems between your N800 and access point.

Re: Very bad browsing experience after firmware update!!!

Thanks Milhouse! Is there a way to check the current setting?

Milhouse 2007-07-10 12:00

Re: Very bad browsing experience after firmware update!!!

Code:

gconftool-2 --get '/system/osso/connectivity/IAP/wlan_sleep_timeout'
should return the current setting.

Unfortunately it's not possible to determine the Nokia default setting as it's not set - I think the WLAN will check if there is a value set and if not it then defaults to a hard coded value. It would be necessary to view the WLAN source code to check the default value.

If you want to revert to the Nokia default value, you need to unset any value you have set with the following command:

Code:

gconftool-2 --unset '/system/osso/connectivity/IAP/wlan_sleep_timeout'
