In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
I'll like to know if you agree with me that i think there's something missing in the N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) phone that makes me not to like it to much at first sight.
This is what i have in mind for now, what do you think? |
Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
missing a release date, price, and confirmation of availability in my country. importing electronics sucks.

What do I think?
I think it's awesome that people are already dissatisfied with a product that until recently, we didn't even know for sure that we were ever going to get |

Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
Keyboard, Adobe Flash (very useful for a lot of stuff, not just videos and games), a desktop, FM transmitter.
I am also curious if Skype is still going to be integrated the same way as it is now, and if it can make video calls. |
Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?

adobe flash video. whatsapp <-- not that i like it but its main app over here. a hardware keyboard. fm transmiter. 1080p video but 720p is fine. |

Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
this thread is pointless until someone in TMO gets their grubby little paws on one and figures out what is what. i have a feeling that the system is more open and customizable than a lot of people think....

Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
Will it be possible to buy the N950 without being a developer? I CAN develop, but I don't enjoy it, but would really enjoy this phone over the N9, I think.

Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
Well, I'll miss a lot of feature from n900, even though im going to keep n900 and get n9 as 2nd phone.. Desktop, live widgets, MicroB and more.. whats missing that I was expecting from n9 are keyboard, HDMI, Micro sd slot.. software side, not that much coz there are still possibilities on updates like Flash and etc...
btw, here's a good 1st look on the software side of n9.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LphiRFvd40I |

And by the way, for those of you missing widgets... Just leave apps open in multitasking and halfswipe to check the status. Simple to with the liveview and 1Gb ram. |
Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
100% support from Nokia to get an ecosystem up and running and commercial devs interested in developing for it !
Without this support, there will be no ecosystem and this device will just die. Fat chance though - that support is now reserved for WP |

Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
I really wish Nokia would sell the N950 with some revved up spec compared to the dev edition. I think it's good to have a developer edition but the qwerty form factor is so N900 esque that it seems a no brainer. The Aluminium unibody construction the qwerty keyboard has clean layout that would sell without trying too hard. The polycarbonate body on N9 is fine on a mid-range device that will sell for £300 to start with. My point is not to say the N9 should sell at that price point but that particular material is cheap hence cheapens the phone 6 months after it ships as the price stabilizes. This will eat at Nokia's margin per device when we need Harmattan to sell well and put the screws on WP. Love the phone. Good job done by all involved. As has been said FM transmitter,HDMI, xenon flash missing for me.

Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?

iOS has 3rd party support coming out of their nostrils
no such support exists for the N9 thats why stuff like flash is needed at this point in time |

what i would have liked to have: keyboard (but i understand why they didnt get one...) flash (wtf nokia?) dont care hdmi out or not i liked widgets, gonna miss them i really hope the price will be low, like 300-400 not subsidized as the specs are last year's. They could get really huge sales if they can make it sub 100$ subsidized. microsd slot, i never have enough memory. ever thats about it |

Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
Hardware:
Precision input touch screen Keyboard of course! (eventually keyboard + battery docking pack) HDMI out for external presentation of everything, not only video. Mobile SERVER TM CPU, Upgradable SOC that hacks WPA on the fly (a nice screen w/o upgradable H/W is waste of earth's resources) Low power consumption E71 like subsystem for survival communication mode (monochrome LCD or partial use of main screen) Easy replacable battery / upgradable battery IR module (Sorry but I like to turn of loud TV's and remote control Macbooks) Memory expansion possibility (RAM + external) Eventually: Dual microsim, Geiger counter, Intoxicometer (alcohol), sleep detector. Software: Things that we take for granted but knowing Nokia might be just left out w/o explanation like Share online (integrated upload batches of pictures to Flicker w/o handing your PW to yet another 3rd party) , enabled FM transmission HW etc..., flash I should not mention? Out of the box power user mode with optional Hildon style desktop and geek input keyboard overlay mode -> see example http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/2...1062115025.jpg It is good to simplify things for iPhone type users but this should be the work of the professional vendor or (corporate) IT support person just like with PC's. Probably a forgotten a lot? Edit: ah yes: availability on announcement! :D |
Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
N9 is missing the N900's kickstand.
N9 is midding the N900's lens cover. N9 is missing the N900's Qwerty physical keyboard N9 is missing the more precice Resistive touchscreen which can be used by those wearinging motorcycle gloves or winter gloves. Imagie trying to edit GPS destinations on with a capacitive screen... You need to look at your mirrors for a hole in heavy traffic, grab your clutch as you let your throttle go, downshift, move over to the side of the road and while watching your mirrors for out of control idtiots entering the breakdown lane and freight trucks losing control, take you glove off so you can use your phone's screen.... while holding the clutch in to keep yourself in 1st gear so you can get out of the way fast if trouble shows up in your mirror... If I'm going to a capacitive screen I'm going to the Asus Transformer, using Skype for calls... if only a 3G or 4G version were available and I could port my AT&T number to Skype... I don't know where I'll be going after the N900, but it won't be the N9. Most of all if Elop continues to turn Nokia into a pile of stupid (let us be honest, of all the choices Windows Phone is the least viable) I'll be moving to Asus-Android. |

Support from Nokia top management is in my opinion the thing N9 is missing the most.

Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
The ONLY things i like about N9 is the screen resolution and the 8MP camera and the fast slick UI screens...but other than that...i don't like anything about it. I need physical keyboard and radio transmitter. They obviously discontinued it as no phone has it...but this is one more reason why N900 is so unique...i am not replacing it anytime soon.

Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
1) Physical Keyboard
2) Lens Cover 3) Xeon Flash 4) Dual Core Processor 5) Kick-Stand |
Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
Physical Keyboard
IR port (for remote control) FM Tx/Rx (might have it, hopefully) Desktop Stylus Input, Pressure sensitivity Stand Decent specs |
Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
This is strange. Why do you want MicroSD. There isn't a phone & never has been a phone on the market with 64GB of eMMC. What do you want?? It hold as much as a n900 with a 32GB MicroSD card together.
Some people thought the FM RX & FM TX were redundant on the N9. It turns out they are hidden deep inside the N9's hardware. Devs could now in fact write an app for the N9 for Fm RX & Fm TX. How loveley! If & if you want sources. = http://www.meegoexperts.com/2011/06/...iver-software/ Please say thanks if this comment was useful to you?!!?:) |
Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
Keyboard, stylus, (micro)SD slot, removable battery, stand and more importantly: a future.
|
Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
lma, you simply do not need a MicroSD card slot. May I ask what device you are using. It doesn't even have 64GB let & even with MicroSD you won't hold anymore than 64GB with one on any other phone.
Keyobard I agree with. Since we could have had a choice. Well, the screen is Multi touch input, so you can buy a TP capacitive stylus can't you?? Removable battery. 1450mAH Nokia could do better even tho they are using AMOLED screen with a slightly larger battery & more power conservative hardware CPU & RAM, & NAND which runs lower in power consumption aswell. :) I also agree with you on the stand. The stand wasn't missed on my N900 because it didn't prop up the phone the correct height & angle anyway & was unstable by slight nocks. About the future. Well, I guesse we'll all have to find out sometime sooner or later. It all depends on how nokia push ahead the rest. OVI Store, OVI Music, or Nokia App store? I hope the N9 has generated a global interest in making developing apps . Based on how the general populace is with the device, how many it sells, how much dev support, Nokia might give Meego a sustainable 1st party support, a viable future. It's good enough. Just plan is messed up especially now a WP7 device seems to appear looking a lot like N9. Maybe some external keyboards can be designed by a third party company for the N9. Alternativley, Nokia make the N950 a consumer device & get more Meego powered phone, arouse more market potential, support from Nokia & developers.!!!! Pleeeeeeese |

Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
What if you have multiple devices, and want to share media between them? How are you going to do it without a MicroSD card?
How are you going to quickly share the pictures with someone on a computer? SCP? SFTP? This is how I share the files on my main computer, but it's not so convenient when you go over someone's house. |
Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
Led...n9 has no LED!
|
Re: In your opinion, what is N9 (MeeGo / Harmattan) missing?
In regards to the MicroSD, look at the N900. Having a separate file system on micro sd has really helped the development of things like MeeGo and Android on the device, if nothing other than from a testing standpoint. I wouldn't reflash my brand new N9 with Android, but if I could boot it off of an SD card I'd be all for it. Also, price. Buying a straight up 64GB phone, is going to cost a lot. Why not get 32 and expand later when you have extra money, or when prices of SD cards drop?

And to those who want to dismiss that with the ecosystem (I hate that trendy corporate buzzword) talk, I don't see that WP7 holds any more promise in that front. Only thing that I can see better with WP7 is for the E-series with integrations to common MS tools, and I really doubt that would be the key for Nokias success. The future lies in platforms that won't lockdown the users, even though that time isn't here yet. For Nokia's sake I hope I'm completely wrong here, only other hope is that someone in the Nokia board grows some balls and will question mr. Elop's strategy and intentions. |
