n900 USA Carrier Question
 

If I was to pick up a used n900 what carriers would I be able to use it on?? Possibly a pay as you go plan?

I am itching to get back into Maemo/MeeGo. iPad is fun and solid, but I want an always on device to carry around. My Android phone is just well... Android at this point.

T-Mobile for true 3G data access. But you can use EDGE/GPRS for data on AT&T and be able to make calls just fine.

Seeing as I pay for an entire family plan w/ full data on Sprint already, I wonder if there are any T-Mobile pay as you go options.

I suppose I could also root my phone and use it as a hotspot.

There is a $10 T-Mobile prepaid Blackberry plan for data. Perhaps you could apply that to the N900 the same way people have applied the T-Mobile Sidekick plan to the N900.

That leads me to ask whether or not it is possible to use the BB plan on the N900, if so, has anyone tried it?

I have a pay-per-month plan with T-Mobile, I was willing to sign a contract but the service rep I talked to said there really wasn't a need to. The reason people sign contracts is to get the subsidized phone price. If you've already got the phone you should be able to find something on T-Mobile.

T-Mobile removed the 'Even More Plus' (no contract) plans from their website a few months ago, but I believe these plans are still available, if you talk to a T-Mobile representative.

Of course I could be wrong, or the terms/prices on the plans may be different for new customers vs legacy plans/pricing, since I noticed that they started mentioning hard limits on data usage, and ditched the old 'unlimited' wording.

what i like about t-mobile is eventhough they said its 30mb of data or 100mb even if you exceed that limit they might slow your internet down but atleast you dont have to pay more and they wont cut you off either... can any carrier offer that in usa?

Yes, Virgin Mobile gives you sort of unlimited data (2.5 Gb fast) for 25 bucks a month. And you also get 300 minutes and unlimited texting.

and what do you mean by sort of unlimited data? my definition of unlimited is unlimited no caps no bs...

so where can i buy the simcard?
cause i really want to use my n900 on it if its that cheap:D

Sort of unlimited as in uncapped speeds for a few GB then capped. As opposted to the T-mobile a few uncapped MBs then capped.
You can't buy a simcard, VM is CDMA.

i dont know if you guys know this.. yes cdma carriers in the usa are cheap but you guys cant use it outside usa i prefer gsm because i dont have to be locked down on what cdma carriers are offering (mostly dumbphones) and if i travel back in my country its nice that i can use the phone i bought here...

and i dont know if you use t-mobile before but i never been capped on data even if you use 1.49$ web day pass or the 30$/mo... it is unlimited.

There are some decent CDMA phones for VM, with a pretty good one coming in a few weeks.
Yes, it sucks that it can't be used in the rest of the world, and when I go to Europe I use a GSM phone (this year I will use my N900).
The daily pass is quite expensive if used often. Besides, I have almost no T-mobile coverage at home, but I have some Sprint coverage, and it would be nice to use my phone at home too..

Even T-Mobile's "Unlimited" plan isn't really, in their ToS it says that you'll be throttled if you exceed 5GB in a month. Yes you'll still get the data, but crap throughput isn't my idea of an ideal "unlimited" plan. Still not much you can do, which sucks.

They sell each as unlimited data, but charge more to raise the cut-off where the speeds are dropped...

You're correct, I was just in one of their stores and asked about this. They said online you can only see the Even More Plus pricing if you're a current customer but anyone can come into a store for EMP plans. Here is the pricing shown to me when I click "Add a line" for my account:

750 min - $49.99
1500 min - $59.99
3000 min - $79.99
Unlimited - $79.99

+ $20 for unlimited txt
+ $40 for unlimited web

These are the family plan prices. It doesn't show me the individual line prices.
