N9 Waterproofing

The N9, made from a unibody plastic shell, filled with internals, then sealed off with a curved gorilla glass screen.

Two things,
Is it safe to say, that if nokia hasn't mentioned as yet, it isn't waterproof?
How hard would it be to waterproof it?

Another feature i cannot understand being excluded, it has almost no moving parts, in a unibody chassis! waterproofing it would be a simple task.

thoughts?

Off topic: I'd let the N9 drown. Now lets talk about waterproofing the beast aka -N900.

On topic: It's very possible but what about the speaker and mic? any attempt to cover that with a case would just dissolve all sound.

I know the pink and blue ones look like a bar of soap, I wouldn't like to test it. You've also got your headphone socket, USB/charger socket, side buttons and camera port. And I wouldn't think the fit of the glass would be tight enough to be completely waterproof.

Re: N9 Waterproofing

@stickymick they specified 0 air between the glass and screen, airtight is watertight?

but fair on the other points, just ALL jap phones are waterproof..
and anybody else notice how every single freaking android phone looks the same?

Re: N9 Waterproofing

stickymick is correct. There are some opening ins the body which make waterproofing quite hard. I would add that there are small holes at the "bottom" side (when using the phone in portrait) for the loudspeaker., visible in the second image on this page for example

Re: N9 Waterproofing

yeah no dice, the only solution would be a very chunky case with removable rubber stoppers and anyone who has had a device with these knows how long (or short) they last.

theres always otterbox cases, but you'd have to remove it to use the device.

Re: N9 Waterproofing

just stick it in a clear plastic bag and tie it off lol

oh right - the screen is capacitive... bad luck :p

Re: N9 Waterproofing

Capacitive effect will work through the bag, so this is a valid solution, caveat being the bag must still be dry to accept meaningful input. I have seen a construction worker do this with his iPhone to some effect.

That's certainly a nice advantage to resistive screens, they operate in the drizzle and can be bagged weathertight.

If it is thin enough, it will work. I've just tried it. :D

Having N9 on the beach would be a huge asset.

Maybe some rubber "casings" would be good enough

Plus, it protects it from sand.

Re: N9 Waterproofing

Nokia could actually waterproof any device if they wanted to.
it does not need to be airtight anywhere. I call this super splashproofing myself because water depth is not really specified.

I checked out the website. It has nothing after 2008 on it. [frustrated politcal comment] Probably this lost momentum during the recent financial unpleasantness brought on by the excessive greed and lack of morals of the financial sector. [/frustrated political commrent] Golden-Shellback.com are "looking for commercial partners only at this time". So, yes, Nokia could have this stuff deposited on devices prior to shipment unless there is some sort of issue with exporting the technology to China, site of many Nokia factories.

That's the sad part, a bit like alien dalvik it's aimed at commercial partners, P2i are doing the same with their Aridion process but we will hopefully see it in our consumer tech soon.

Oh man I sure am glad this waterproof bag with Velcro tags has a sticker telling me it's 'iPod compatible', the iPod's non euclidean angles and such make it so hard to put it in things that manage to hold all my other stuff.

Sorry for brining old topic back (but I believe it's better than starting new one)

I remember there was some water/shock proof case dedicated for Nokia n9. I would like to obtain it, but cannot google it (tried for a few hours).

It looked very solid, got black/blue colour and even got dedicated/waterproof USB port (it worked like a micro-usb port extender).
