DontGo - OBD Diagnostics on N900

I was working on this project so i though to share it with you guys.
It is an OBD diagnostics running on N900. So far it works perfect on my car. For other cars still more work needs to be done. I will try to add more features (Cars, Ecus and Protocols) as soon as i get free time.;)

Link: DontGo - Diagnose on the Go.

Thanks

Looks nice. Would love to try it out. I have an ELM as well (800 series I think? Also bluetooth.) And while I'm in the US, I have a smart, so... I'm betting it behaves the same way. ;)

Looks good, a decent OBD application is definitely missing on the N900.

Wow, looking forward to it! I was actually just trying to get pyOBD working on the N900 earlier today but the connection kept on timing out after I finally got all pieces together.

Re: DontGo - OBD Diagnostics on N900

how do you interface with the OBD port? a bluetooth dongle?

ashyu 2011-06-29 00:04

Re: DontGo - OBD Diagnostics on N900

Yes, I believe that most people using mobile phones to interface with the OBD-II system use Bluetooth dongle's. You can find some fairly inexpensive ones these days online. I picked one up recently from eBay for around $15 USD.

Just lining up to test this, since my previous efforts with Carman have failed (random connects / disconnects to the BT dongle). Car is Honda Jazz.

Re: DontGo - OBD Diagnostics on N900

My car is OBD II but was built just before it was complianced, so it uses Mitsubishi's version of it (TS Magna 6G72). :( There's only one product available outside a Mitsubishi MUT-2 that can work with my car, but it's $200AUD. :(:( So many sad faces.

Edit: but this is awesome, another brilliant, REAL WORLD USEFUL app. Out of interest, how will the ability to read additional cars be added to the app?

got the same.. maybe I'm blind but I can't find any intructions for installing your app..

I also planned writing such a application using python with a advanced API, a daemon which would collect data in the background while driving and a user interface with a "ui-factory" (that how dev's call it) which would choose the right layout for the end-user device..

Re: DontGo - OBD Diagnostics on N900

I have the same one, and couldn't get it to work with Carman. Something about Carman not liking the ELM327 1.4.

Could be beneficial to split out the libraries so that other projects could also utilize the newer versions of it.

Re: DontGo - OBD Diagnostics on N900

Hello,

Thank you all for you interest in the application.
I built this application in my spare time to diagnose my car. And i thought to share it with you.
Still a lot of work needs to be done in order to bring to release state.
Hence i don't know when i will be releasing it.

Cheers

Re: DontGo - OBD Diagnostics on N900

I'm very interested in this. Do You plan to - at any time in the future - implement options to reset warning messages, etc.? I know, that You can do everything at once ;) so my question is rather about application "roadmap", than actual feature request.

Remember, that carman source code was released, when then decided to not develop it further - maybe some parts of it can be helpful to implement some features for DonTGO?

Re: DontGo - OBD Diagnostics on N900

raedbenz, you seem to be very busy..
If you need help in packaging or whatever send me a pm - maybe I can help you ;)

I also started coding now on my application, which I described here (http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...9&postcount=17).. I'm sure I'll get a good modules at the end but to be honest I'm not good in making UI's.. I don't think I would get at the end something like Carman, but something simple using Qt :D

hope to hear from you soon

Re: DontGo - OBD Diagnostics on N900

I hate to break it to you but your thread title was rather misleading :) There is a difference between OBD and OBDII. Lots of older cars (I think predating year 2000) runs on OBD system which included my car.

btw. it isn't also OBDII which is used there. The ELM chip it the adapter is doing the biggest job, like checking the sent checksum from the OBDII interface ;)

thopiekar 2011-07-11 09:20

Re: DontGo - OBD Diagnostics on N900

Sure this could maybe not be the right place for asking that, but which output did you get when connecting the ELM327 device via serial connection?
Need the information to make my modules compatible to other devices.

Here is how to connect to your device using hcitool and python using pybluez:
1. Find out which bluetooth address your adapter has
Code:

hcitool scan
2. Launch the python console
Code:

python
3. import the pybluez modules
Code:

import bluetooth
3. create a bluetooth rfcomm socket
Code:

sock=bluetooth.BluetoothSocket( bluetooth.RFCOMM )
sock.connect((<btaddr>, 1))

4. get the message from the socket
Code:

sock.recv(2048)
5. close the connection
Code:

sock.close()
I expect something like: "\r\rELM327 v1.4\r\r>"
Can you confirm this?

thanks for your effort.

I have a Volvo S40 1.6 (2006 model)

I'm not too familiar with all the inner workings but the bottom line is that OBDII is incompatible with OBD and vice versa :). its somewhat a shame because it means that for car enthusiasts who have to much smaller sized budgets have to get appropriate and different equipment to suit what matters on hand.

For now I guess I don't have much of a choice but to use whatever software that is fully compatible with OBD and it only works under windows called efilive.
