[ANNOUNCE] BashORGquotations - unofficial bash.org client - the encyclopedia of funny IRC quotes!

BRAVE TESTERS WANTED! :)

BashORGquotations is a small client for bash.org - and a QML learning project for myself. :)

http://competition.meetmeego.org/sys...png?1311796140
http://competition.meetmeego.org/sys...png?1311796139

"Welcome! Browse away to your amusement, and..." - with this words welcomes bash.org their visitors. Since more than a decade is this page collecting funny quotes from IRC, ICQ and several other chat channels.
BashORGquotations brings this fun now within a nice QML surface directly to your device. Ready to waste some time or simply to read a mixture of nerdy, pubertal or simply ingenuous conversations.

You can find it currently at Maemo Extra-Devel. Enjoy but as always at your own risk. :)

The usual warning applies:
Quote:

The software hosted in extras-devel is not ready for normal users!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't play with it unless you really know what you are doing. Be ready to file proper bug reports instead of posting complaints.
Expected problems: crashes, battery drain, poor system performance, full disk space & more - SERIOUSLY!

Don't play with Extras-devel if you haven't backed up your data or aren't prepared to re-flash your device.
This Application is in Alpha stage. But it works so far without big problems. But still, please test it only if you know what you're doing or wait what will happen in this Thread. And don't forget to create a backup (just in case). I only want to share my little application. But I hope for a lot of positive feedback! :)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] BashORGquotations - unofficial bash.org client - the encyclopedia of funny IRC quotes!

Is it possible to add the functionality of viewing the Russian version (bash.org.ru)?

Mmh... I would say yes. But it's more complicated for me because I don't understand the language and they have some advertisments between the quotations...

I have currently still some problems with the parsing of the english website. (sometimes some characters are missing, the nicknames are sometimes not correctly detected and the first quotation is always not contained in my list) - I will try to fix my parsing code and speed the whole thing up. After the code works flawless I will try to integrate the aditionally needed parts for bash.org.ru :)

Thanks for the hint.

Cool! I'll test and (hopefully) report. Btw: german-bash.org is also there...

Seems the last line / entry of a quote is cut off at the end.

Sorry, no update today, but I want to inform you that I'm currently working to implement different language versions.
Please see the screenshots below for a small teaser.

Sadly I'm currently in big trubble with the encoding of the russian characters. :(

If here are some Qt developers around with some know-how in this issue-area I would be glad to receive some hints! :D Otherwise I will try to research how to do this next weekend. :)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] BashORGquotations - unofficial bash.org client - the encyclopedia of funny IRC quotes!

I've added now support for the german bash site: german-bash.org - I have still some problems with the language encoding, but at the german site they are not as horrible as at the russian. :D
So we are able to read the text - even with some wrong characters. Will try to fix it soon... ;)

http://competition.meetmeego.org/sys...png?1312659317

I asked the webmaster twice for a permission to integrate his content into my application - but still without reply. So the support for the german site is preliminary... perhaps I had to remove it afterwards.
I don't know...

Does anybody know about the facts regarding the copyright for the viewed content?

My Application has a reference with link to the page, I don't store any kind of data and I show only the content from the websites in a different way (without advertisements).
So, technically I would say it works like a Opera Mini - but specific created for this special website.

Am I right?

FINALLY I was (thanks to my newest app idea and my amateurish first steps) able to fix the encoding issue for the german language! :D

I already uploaded a update for the german version to maemo extras. Get it while it is hot. ;) The russian version should be ready soon! :)

great work ^^ keep it up like this ;)
i'm happy about the implementation of the german language(native german speaker ^^)
what i would like to see/what i think is missing in your app is a refresh button for the random posts. it would be very cool if you could integrate one ^^

Yeah, I had this thought already... will see how to do it. At the english version with the 50 random quotes there was not such a need. But the german site is very "economical" in comparsion with only 5 quotes. ;)

I made a additional small fix and pushed BashORGquotations to extra-testing. Please VOTE if it works without problems. :)

I guess it is now official and I just wan't to say thankyou. My small Application BashORGquotations participated at our Community Coding Competition and won the 4th place! Yay! :D

THANKS A LOT FOR ALL VOTERS! :)

And by the way, this would be a good chance to vote for the package. ;)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] BashORGquotations - unofficial bash.org client - the encyclopedia of funny IRC quotes!

So, lets wake up this thread. Still no update regarding the russian language support, I have to apologize, but finally I found last weekend some hours for a fast port of this application to the Nokia N9. Perhaps I will find soon some time to do the support for the russian bast.org site. But time is a very limited resource.

I removed the ORG in the middle of the application name.
Get BashQuotations now from the ovi store for free. (there is only a small advertisement, click it if you want to support my small hobby with lousy 0,005 US ct :D)

And as always: ENJOY! :)

I'm sorry to say this but this is just a horrible app.

Limited functionality (only choices are random and top100 quotes, why on earth?), atrocious UI design combined to the lagging scrolling makes this very burdensome to use.

Yes, perhaps. I created it last year as my first qml application and to test myself how to parse a website to do some learning for a different project. But it works and I use it myself surprisingly often. Because of this I ported it for the N9 to share with oters what I have created. And since I know already the Top Quotes I use this app myself only to read the random quotes. So I use myself only 50% of this horible, limited app. ;) But perhaps there are some people out there which doesn't know those...

Could you please show me the applications you have created? Perhaps I can learn this way how to create applications with unlimited functionality.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] BashORGquotations - unofficial bash.org client - the encyclopedia of funny IRC quotes!

Look, normally I would not have commented anything about this, but since you submitted it to the Ovi Store I felt that it was open to criticism. In my eyes this turns a hobby project app to a "real" application, and I hate to see crappy applications in the Nokia Store.

I haven't created any applications, so I can't help you by example. That does not disqualify me to spot problems in application design, though. let me elaborate two things what I feel are wrong in this app.

1) Limited functionality

Only thing this app really has to offer is the random quotes. To make this app more usable and a real, viable option to the website itself there should be additionally at least Latest quotes and Browse quotes option with search.

2) User interface

- Not compatible with the Harmattan UI guidelines.
- Button design, color choices and the way different elements are distributed in the UI are unbeliavable ugly.

There. Just my two cents if you are planning to develope this app further.

Albeit the color scheme may not be pleasant to everyone's (and my eyes), i find said UI design still better than quite a lot of applications contained in catalogs of "other platforms".

Aaah, now we are one a level we can talk about it. :) Before it sounded like unconstructive ranting... and not more.

Yes, but please, I prefer constructive criticism. ;) Otherwise I react already a little bit allergic...

Why should it transmute from a hobby project to a "real" application?
Also hobby projects are real applications. Some are good, some not. And because you are able to download it directly via the store on your device implies not it is a commercial application. Oh, no! I'm sure I will never be able to pay for the power bill for the juice my Computer needed during the development.
But a availability via the Store implies the application was at least able to get thru the Nokia store QA and will not damage your device in the first place. And in my opinion this is not unimportant. :)

You are always free to use the website. You are not forced to use the application. But you can use the app to read the random quotes in a comfortable way and to open later if you want the correlated quote directly at the browser to vote for it or to sent the link via instant messenger to a friend. At least this is the way I'm using it.

Yes, I know. It is the same UI the N900 and MeeGo Tablet version had. At least I spent some time to move the menu from the top of the screen to the bottom. So you are able to use it like the most of the Harmattan applications, even if the color sheme is not the same.
It is a small fun application. And it works, even if it follows not the Harmattan style. The most games and in the end actually angry birds doesn't follow the Harmattan Design Guidelines.
Yes, I could have spent a day or two more to replace all selfcreated UI element with the Harmattan Components and do a lot of testing to search and fix a lot of new layout bugs. But time is currently a very, very limited resource for myself and as a stricken gimp user I like the paradigm "release early, release often" a lot more than "develop forever and release never". :)

It is planned at some point if I'm in the mood. And perhaps I will adapt the layout elements, add support for more languages and perhaps a voting system. But even if it is aviable at the store it is still a hobby project I created in my spare time.

And my application is at least not created with some kind of building assistant to display a simple rss feed. It is totally hand made. And there are sadly a lot of simple rss feed viewer at the store. But at least I'm able to see the difference.

You mentioned slow animations and lagging scrolling in your first post. Have you still those problems or had you something running in the background while using the app?
