Hildon Desktop Lockups !!!
 

Im am so frustrated with this N900 some times but more so today. I have been experiancing desktop lockups like mad. since 8.30 this moorning Ive restarted my phone 4 times because of desktop lockup. I can still use all functions by touching the left top icon and going into the app screen to find the icon i want to use ie making a call or looking at picture etc.

So why is my desktop locking up so much for no reason? again Ive not got lots of apps running in the back ground or anything like that but I can put the phone down for 15- 20 mins, come back to use it and none of the icons work!... and no matter using the terminal to restart desktop results in a loss of widgets, so I have to restart, ive tried all of those command lines and left with most or all icons missing.. so thats out... surly there must be a fix for this as behind the desktop the phone is still running fine. Any help please.

hmmm...your blamming your device for this???
tell me what widgets did you use to on your desktop???

Not blaming the desktop... Im not sure what to blame as Im not sure where the issue is... Im hoping some one can point me to the problem so i can fix it. well i have seen your desktop....i presume that the missing icon again & again come from WebOS games right???
if it does then you need to know that WebOS games do cause some kind of problem if you add then to your desktop....right now this bug have not yet been fixed....
beside WebOS icon which other icon disappear after reboot???

All desktops lockup..every icon is not usable untill restart.. so this is why I say Im not sure were the cause is...!! Missing icons will happen when I do a kill all command and the desktop goes off then on again most icons on most screens are missing.

This used to happen to me a lot when I had a few Queen Beacon widgets on my desktop. Now I got rid of them and have been fairly trouble free. Even Recaller used to crash when I was in a phonecall with QBW widgets, after getting rid of them, no problem with Recaller either.

Hmmm!! maybe what I could do is get them off the desktops for a bit to monitor them!

Yeah, I got a stock N900. Never overclocked it or anything.

I used to have 4 QBW widgets: Battery Level, Battery MAH, Root FS Level, Memory Card % Left.

I liked them but my desktop would freeze up a hell of a lot. Losing my icons all the time.

But my main problem was with Recaller which I will never stop using if I can help it. It never used to stop recording after a phonecall and would just carry on indefinitely until I rebooted the damn phone. I couldn't stop it manually with the Icon on the Desktop because the Desktop had frozen, heh!

I got rid of all my widgets, including non QBW ones. And my problems stopped completely. I then slowly added widgets again over time, but not QBW ones, and I've never had any problems like this since. *touchwood*.

I did notice that Processor and RAM widget on your Desktop. I used to have that on mine. I never did add that one back to my Desktop so if the problems persist, keep your eye on that one too.

It was a boring process of elimination. But I WAS plagued with these problems too.

Thanks man.. thats a good heads up... will remove them for a few days and check the out come. will report back once testing is done.

Learn to link. You can link directly to your message.
Tell us what you have installed
if from testing&devel then use search and learn how to debug your system. Moreover if you have custom kernel or CSSU then maybe it´s not for you.

After 2009 this forum has been filled with tons of information regarding n900 please use it. Then make thread where you list all your problems and tell us why stuff what you have found from forums has not worked and maybe perhaps what you have found after using tools like top, htop.

Quite certainly first thing to do on this kind of problems is to remove all widgets.

Condescending little mini Dictator. "Learn to link" I'm sure this guy knows all this already but.....

Threads like this are born out of frustration. Perhaps it isn't so easy to perform searches (Touchsearch for instance) on a Nokia Internet Tablet when the Desktop keeps freezing up.

i never got any problem using QBW on my desktop....i have more then 30 QBW running on my 4 desktop....all of them works find even after rebooting or turn off for a few hour....i overclock my device to 805Mhz,use optimize N900 n swappolube....no major problem at all...

You could try enabling the desktop hardware acceleration.

@slender, You don't know me and I don't know you so the last thing Im going to do is start a slagging match. Im a electronic enginner with 24 years experiance in what I do.. and if you ask me about it I can quote you pretty direct answers to a solution, what I am not and don't intend to be is a linux super duper wiz walop bing bang boo coder. I like my N900 because its different and it does what I want, not what every other phone on the market does... so if I have a issue Im going to ask questions as I don't code or understand coding to deeply. As you can see by looking at my desktops its not standard I did that with help from the forum and everyone as been great. Your input is in some ways correct and if I had the time to sit and learn to code and all the other stuff Id love to put it all out there for guys like yourself to extract but I don't hence why I asked for help. three words "Learn to link" thats not you say to someone you don't know simply helping or asking if I could debug and put it out their would have given you an answer.

@JamesBond@ge your reply was spot on...infact it was everything that it was and why I made the thread. Ill be increasing your thanks.

Ps removed all qbw and so far my desktop is as fluid as water. fingers crossed ill see how it goes.

@JamesBond@ge over 24hrs later and not one desktop lockup...:D:D:D seems you hit it just right. thinking about it I really only want the battery level so Ill add that back to main screen and see if thats ok.. so again many thanks things are looking up!!.

Ahh good on ya mate. Cheers for letting me know. It kinda confirms for me that what I did was right. It must be about 4 or 5 months for me now that the lockups have stopped.

And I have been able to use Recaller with no problems at all.

It's a shame, because I did like my QBW widgets.

Now if you ask me why the widgets lock the Desktop up, well thats a different story. I'm not a technical bod at all lol.
