N900 Dies overnight, but battery is charged
Hey,
I've searched for a good while about this issue but I can't find anything similar to my issue. Background: I had previously installed Uboot PR13 in anticipation of installing another OS but I haven't gone any further. [phone would switch on fine, had it running like this for 3 weeks fine] The problem occurred like this: In the car the battery charges via USB connected to the stereo, this normally charges it great, until one day when I disconnected it after an hours drive and it showed only 60 percent remaining. [ I investigated this, and sometimes it would say "not charging" about 2 minutes after saying "charging" when connected to the USB.] When I went to bed I set my alarm and turned the phone off because the battery was still at 60% Needless to say my alarm didn't go off and I was late for work. The phone wouldn't turn on. I plugged it into the car, and it "boot looped" [penguin would show, screen would be really dull, then it would loop and loop] I removed the battery for a couple of minutes, then plugged it back into the USB, and the orange light came on permanently, I left it like this for about 10 minutes, then tried to boot it. The screen lit up, I tried to write "run noloboot" by which time the phone switched itself off. This happened a couple of times till eventually the orange light started blinking. I let it charge for 5 minutes then turned it on. Got it booted alright and the battery showed 60%!! Now this problem seems to happen if I turn the phone off overnight, I can turn it off for a minute and it'll reboot fine, but not overnight. This happened again on Friday morning. I got it booted quicker and the battery status was 100% and it didn't need charging all day!! I've removed uboot by flashing the device, but haven't flashed eMMC. The problem still remains. Can anyone shed any light on this issue, it's pretty annoying! :) Thanks |

Any suggestions at all? :) |

also see Battery Tests, Homemade 3000mAh XL Battery & Q&A (GOTO POST #1!!!!!) the age of the device isn't indicative of the performance of the battery (the original NOKIA battery included in my (new) N900 was not working properly & i barely made it thru the day, even with only network on 2G & very moderate use; 1st tried a OEM which turned out to top out @ 800 mAh (vs. 1320 mAh for the original) eventually bought an original one for a few bucks more & been happily going thru a couple days ever since :) ) |
Re: N900 Dies overnight, but battery is charged
The fault doesn't seem to indicate that. As I said, the battery shows a good deal of charge once I get it booted, and will stay on and function correctly, even if I leave it overnight, as long as the device is switched on, it is fine.
It's when it is turned off long periods of time that it won't boot again. Why would that indicate battery? I am asking. Thanks. |

even though the powered off device still uses a tiny little bit of power to keep time, this is negligible (at least over a few days or even weeks). the management of the battery is indeed part of the device, but that the devices finds the battery empty after a power off lasting more then a few seconds isn't the device's problem, methinks. it is sign of a problem with the battery. just my two cents :o |
Re: N900 Dies overnight, but battery is charged
Okay I will try another battery, what's the cost of a genuine one, as on ebay a "genuine" one can be as little as £2.50, or £9.
Thanks for the help. |
Re: N900 Dies overnight, but battery is charged
as linked a few posts back, look to my thread for battery advice/buyers guide before just buying of ebay and having a pretty high % of being ripped off, thats why i made the thread, to find the best battery and to let you all know where NOT to buy

the OEM one i bought for 6 or 7 £ a few months earlier was doing okay but only had 800 mAh (instead of the 1320 mAh advertissed) the last one tops of @ 1230 mAh, but according to the author of the thread i posted earlier, the logic of the device is showing less then the actual capacity. going to a NOKIA care center () is pointless, unless it is a major one; they'll just say they'll take the device in & send it to NOKIA... |

Again go to my thread and instead of a Original get a Scud, Polarcell or Japod. The Scud is the best and will give you much more runtime. |

This points 1 of 3 possibilities (AFAICT). 1. Your old battery is f******. 2. There is some run away process that is working that is not present after a reboot and your in offline mode. 3. You have a serious hardware problem. How old is your battery? Is it an official battery? How many times has it been charged over it's lifetime? Ten times? A thousand? Have you received your SCUD battery yet? Does the problem persist? What other **** have you installed, from you description it would imply you have or are considering dual booting meego? Have you installed power kernel, power kernel settings, etc? Before we jump to the conclusion of hardware fault, I would recommend a COMPLETE reflash. However that is the last step. Right now I am leaning towards dud battery. |
Re: N900 Dies overnight, but battery is charged
Thanks for looking into it.
The battery is official, new with the phone, which is now perhaps one year old. I have reflashed last week [only phone, not card], noloboot is now removed totally. Other software installed now is power kernel, settings, speed patch. All these were installed after the problem started however. New battery left Hong Kong today, hah! I will turn it off tonight, perhaps with the battery removed, see what happens. Thanks. |

1. Charge fully, disconnect from charger. 2. Install 'batterygraph'. 3. Start N900 up in offline mode. 4. Leave over night. Report results and provide the graph from batterygraph. That should give us a good indication of what the discharge curve is like. (make sure battery graph has CPU, charge & network enabled). |
Re: N900 Dies overnight, but battery is charged

Re: N900 Dies overnight, but battery is charged
Right, may have some progress here.
Scud not arrived yet, Royal mail tracking just says "on it's way" - No ****? :) Inspected the in-car cable [supposed genuine nokia cable from ebay] and noticed the plastic mouldings were rather "shoddy" looking, like they'd been carved by hand. So I got another cable. No charging issues in the car for 3 days so far. Turned the phone off last night, and it turned on OK this morning. Might be coincidence, or perhaps the cable was affecting the phone's charging when on the wall plug etc. I contacted the ebay seller and they sent me another cable, which looks much more genuine than the last. Will keep you updated of the scud, and I will be turning the phone off every night from now on to see if it continues. Cheers for all the help. |
