I may purchase N9 and/or may purchase any other Nokia Meego powered devices with phone functionality. The day when Nokia is finished with Meego for devices with phone functionality is the day that I switch across to Android platform and hoping OpenMoko to release a more updated device with phone functionality/phone.

Re: Next phone after N900 for year 2011

I will probably keep my N900 for years, but I'm pretty sure that my next phone for daily use could be N9. I'm also looking forward to upcoming iPhone and I like HTC phones.

Actually there aren't any smartphone which could be a replacement for N900, because most of the phones with QWERTY keyboard ain't good for me - specs are bad :(

I want a smartphone similar to Samsung Galaxy S II specs but with keyboard like N900.

No I'm not a Galaxy S II fanboy. For me - it looks so cheap because of build quality.
Nokia is has far more better build quality.
iPhone and HTC build quality is quite good.
I only like Galaxy S II specs. Very impressive, but it eats a lot of battery and still it lags sometimes :)

And yes... I find myself not very interested in Android. Just don't like it except HTC because I like their phone HTC Sense :)

That's about me :)

For me new phone ain't a priority. I need PC for gaming :) and for other useful things: Photoshop, video editing / recording and so on.

Re: Next phone after N900 for year 2011

Possibly the HP Pre 3. Perhaps not until it's been around a bit and comes down in price and the firmware's been updated a couple of times.
I've had a go at android devices, but I don't get on with that OS. I like to be able to close applications and know that they're closed.
WebOS looks whizzy, and after using the N900 for a while, I'm not going to be too upset at an app store that has a fraction of the content that android/iDevices have.

Well, you can buy one shipping today for £360.00 including VAT (around 60% the suggested price of a 16G N9).

Edit: never mind that, it's £299 straight from the mothership.

Re: Next phone after N900 for year 2011

Nothing particularly excites me in Android, and I am disinclined to give this incarnation of Nokia any more money.

I demand high-quality hardware and a QWERTY keyboard. The only candidate at the moment is the Milestone 3, but if the bootloader remains locked it will not be an attractive option.

I would be interested in WebOS and a Pre3, but HP aren't really showing the proper commitment to actually getting it to market. [Edit] Yes, it is available in Australia as pre-order (ha. ha. ha.) but I remain suspicious about their commitment and long-term support for the platform and hardware. As well as its quality.

I am going to make the N900 last as long as I can.

Re: Next phone after N900 for year 2011

after the n900 the only other mobile that has the same appeal is the N9, android doesn't appeal, used them before. don't like the galaxy s2, it's wider then my laptop nearly and i like to have my phone in my pocket and be able to walk without looking like peg-leg. Ios doesn't appeal at all. i like having xterm and easy root. although i'm not very proficient with linux terminal i do like trying things and learning etc.

be nice if i can still get spare parts for my n900 to keep it going for another few years if i get faults.

Re: Next phone after N900 for year 2011

I agree with my posters on here nothing is really better than the N900 at present for my needs. As the N9 is not going to be available on contract in the UK and I fear may lack any longterm Nokia support or ever get Flash 10. It looks like I will be forced to move over to the rmoured HTC 1.5mgz or iphone 5 if I need a new phone later this year as the SG2 build quality/size puts me off that phone.

Really hoping LG will release a meego phone and perhaps google buying moto may force their arm in this regard? Wishful thinking I know!

Re: Next phone after N900 for year 2011

already have two N900s (one as primary & 2nd as dev)
from some NITDroid testing i concur with others on the thread that android simply is not open enough. not even properly Linux. more like iOS then like maemo.
looking into getting a 3rd N900 to be kept as backup of the primary, booted up once a month or so to sync them 'til primary wears out.
using dev to check MeeGo's progress & if it gets far enough to be a primary OS, well, good for N900 & MeeGo :D

still hoping that after the wp debacle, NOKIA may come to its senses & start building MeeGo devices again & who knows, a successor to the N900

just downloaded all Maemo repos so that i can refresh a N900 w/ FW & reload all SW from the local repository on my PC (via ftpd or if no other way httpd / still to be looked into) from a FAM installed software list.

should keep me going even post Elocalypse

I'll try to get N9 as Slovenia is not canceled yet (simply because i want it!) and as for *phone*, I'll probably get E6.

Have some experience with other touch phones and "touch" thing is simply not for me :)

i just bought my next phone: A nokia n900. It will sit in the cupboard until my current n900 breaks hardware wise.

The only other thing looking interesting is the upgrade mainboard for the openmoko (http://projects.goldelico.com/p/gta04-main/), however I have not enough time for tinkering with such stuff

Re: Next phone after N900 for year 2011

Based on the general theory applicable to desktops that "if it can run Windows, it can run GNU/Linux at least as well, if not better" ... if one of these new WPs have decent h/w specs then perhaps it would be worth trying to flash Meego/Cordia on to it? There are reports of various distros being stuck on existing WPs so perhaps ... just* a matter of isolating the hardware from the OS sufficiently to substitute.

As for a new phone now, if you want something that has the range of functionality of the N900? Err there's nothing out there mate!

*no small feat!

Re: Next phone after N900 for year 2011

Nothing offered this year interests me. I am sure I will still be using my n900 a year from now.

One huge issue for me is the uncertainty of the t-mobile/att merger. 3g and so called 4g frequency and compatibility is too uncertain to even think of investing money in a new phone.

Re: Next phone after N900 for year 2011

I think the feeling is almost the same for everyone: even if processor/memory on newer phones exceed our n900, there is not real replacement.

I'm one of those tempted by the Galasy S2, however, is manufactured with cheap plastic. Regarding Android: I've neved used it.

Iphone5: I've been tempted by the iPhone4, however, I'm an OpenSource/Linux lover.

At the end, I think I'm waiting for the N9.

Anyway, after OverClocking+Swappolube+SpeedPatch+CSSU my n900 is kind of a new phone, I can wait maybe until Christmas to think about changing.

Re: Next phone after N900 for year 2011

I have had the Samsung Galaxy S II for a week now and it's completely changed my mind on Android. Perhaps it's the super fast, super light, super awesome AMOLED screen, super 8MP camera, super long battery life on the SGS2 that has made the change from Maemo to Android easy. I was in love with my Nokia N900 and thought I could never go with another model let alone only a touch screen Smartphone without a keyboard, but one week in and I could never go back to my Nokia N900.

Everyone to their own and so I don't want to agree with the folk that say the N900 is the best phone ever (two weeks ago I was saying that), but today I am saying the SGS2 with Gingerbread is f**king incredible. The possibilities are endless and IMO that is an awesome thing.

My N900 has been cleaned and placed in it's original box, to be switched on one day so I can remember the two best years of my life. (2009 to 2011 - R.I.P. My Nokia N900).:D

Re: Next phone after N900 for year 2011

Good question! I was thinking i may some how "merge" my N900 with my car as it's great for music on the move with it having an FM transmitter, shame no other maker see's this as a required feature...

As for the replacement I was thinking of an HTC Z... Its the one with a flip out keyboard, my phone only needs replacing next year so fingers crossed something better comes along but somehow I doubt it! Blackberry seem to be the only ones thinking a qwerty keyboard is a must?!?!?! Does my head in!

Here's to my N900 lasting forever though! Hip, Hip, Hoorah!!!

;)

No disrespect or anything, but really? "The day when Nokia is finished with Meego"... Really? What exactly are you waiting for?

As far as a new phone, right now there is no viable alternative, but since my N900 was recently replaced, I can luckily wait.

@MyNokiaN900: Can you give us some feedback related to the construction? I've only had it once in my hand and it seemed fragile for me.

According to your signature, you're a power user that have taken the n900 to the limit, so, your opinion I think is very valuable here.

next to N900?
N900 has a taboo its "Final Phone Nothing follows" why?
didnt you notice?
they killed it so early because its a complete anti market!
if a phone wont be killed at once then its not n900 replacement!

gorilla glass?
= if a gorilla glass breaks meaning a huge impact was received by a phone, so phone is bricked, gorilla glass dont resist airborn microscopic rocks every touch u can see scraches if you reflect it in sunrays,

besides did u see chips inside n900? it got RIBS! thats a real gorilla!

dual core?
notice the apps are being close to optimization
ipk hero of sparta runs at 250 mhz downclocked (perfect speed)

a real game experience call only be attain @ ps3 and xbox

phone is to UTILITY thats the highest it can get,

core is for computing its only for office apps but using a
virtual keyboard for reports?? pop up every word u type is annoying. imagine 10 pages

SUPER AMOLED?
any hot girl will just say "hey i watched it @ the big screen!" movies a for bigscreen!
it aint cool to tell your pals u watched alone in your room :D

Battery?
use all multitasking see if it handle it, office + games + Torrent

Camera?
"hey wait im gonna wipe the lens first" just a moment,

being open source makes it special, theres more to that
notice the vacant slot inside n900? the blocks that dont have use? it can be reserve for additional hardware for those talented @ hardware mods,

N900 is for people who wants to move on and focus @ other things in life, people who search for a final phone A.K.A. (Utility tool)

nokia see these things, but in return they killed the device production due to market impact
see how it eats all phone in 2010 with only pr 1.2
http://www.fonearena.com/blog/24094/...okia-n900.html
http://www.fonearena.com/blog/24094/...okia-n900.html
thats a serious threat
any phone can do that!? being shutdown of its production at once!

Hi Isolano,

Yes, a power user indeed...

The build quality of the SGS2 cannot be compared to the N900, because there are no moving parts and there is a lot less hardware, but it is by no means flimsy or fragile. I can't bend it or flex it. It's thin and light and feels tough, but I guess could be perceived to be fragile. I have not dropped it yet (then again I never dropped my N900 either, since I am a careful soul). The back cover has a great paterned coating on it and doesn't make it feel slippery in the hand. The size or height is 11mm longer than the N900. it's not too long and feel great in my hands. It's roughly 6mm wider.

The screen is is just as tough as the N900 screen, and I expect it to handle in the same way. I am not one to bother about small scratches etc. Over time, with dust in pockets, and keys etc, it will get scratched.

TheLongshot 2011-08-18 21:19

Re: Next phone after N900 for year 2011

To be honest, I'm not thinking about that right now. My N900 meets my needs for the forseeable future. When the time comes to replace it, I'll examine my options and see if there is a powerful smartphone with a keyboard that meets my needs.

I'm guessing I might need to settle with Android (which is what I was going to do before the N900 came out) but I do hold out some hope that Meego can find a sponsor.

Re: Next phone after N900 for year 2011

my next phone.. should mostly be a one-stop communication device, Nokia N900 has made me learn many things and above all has been the best internet communication device I have ever used, the worst part I can't match anything to the Nokia N900 experience
the next phone must be atleast an other maemo 5 device, maybe Nokia N950 if I get the same learning and communication experience... or Finally some boring BB device.

Re: Next phone after N900 for year 2011

IF my N900 dies during 2011, which I'm hoping it won't (or the repositories vanish or anything else bizarre), I'm going right to a phone that makes calls and has a sim-card. As basic as a dumbphone can possibly be, and just dust off my laptop with some new distros of Ubuntu or something.

If I have to shell out over $500 for a 64GB N9 I'll just buy a laptop or tablet or something with nice new hardware.
