Gmail Mobile on Nokia 770?
Hello all,
Have any of you had any success at gmail's new mobile-phone site? When I try to go to m.gmail.com I get an "XML parsing failed: mismatched tag" error. I was curious as to if others are having this problem or not and if they are now trying to block regular users - do you think we can find a workaround? I find gmail a bit slow regularly, so Gmail mobile would be great. This guy here said it was working and even has some screenshots: http://www.dillernet.com/apple/2005/...bile-launched/ |
I had this working on my home PC, but I get the same XML error on it now. I think the site is hooped.

Works like a charm on my desktop. No 770 to try it on, though (I'll get one when it works properly).

They also have a list of "supported" devices that they've tested and the 770 isn't on it. In fact, all the devices on the list are phones, so that gives you an idea of how m.gmail.com is positioned. It's a young offering, though. I can't imagine it won't improve. Mike |
I just tried and it works with my 770. Even with https://m.gmail.com. Back on Friday i also had this XML error message.

Works for me also.

Actually it works just fine on the 770. The XML error seems to happen when the Gmail cookie expires and a new login is required. In my experience if you authenticate on your account using the regular interface, the mobile version works again (until next time :-)

works OK with some issues
Mostly differences in behvaior between the regular gmail interface and the mobile interface. Mobile interface loads faster and is easier to display; it lacks some of the functionality of the full interface (no surprise), especially in handling attachments and following links embedded in emails. I find myself using the mobile interface if I just want to quickly check messages; I prefer the full interface if I expect to look at attachments.
One tip I suggest is to use the full interface as an easy way to deal with MS Office attachments - have gmail display them as HTML and you can usually get the gist of what someone sent to you without needing the "doesn't exist for us" msoffice viewer. |
The normal view, basic html, and mobile view all work for me. The mobile view is going to be very useful when tethered with a gprs/edge phone.

It seems to work fine after you've already logged in and have checked the "Remember me on this computer" option.
Another great google powered gateway is http://www.google.com/pda Gives you plain HTML search results w/o ads and I think it simplifies the web site it links to to better display on a PDA's presumably more limited web browser and smaller screen. The full pages come through, not chopped to little sub pages like when you use http://wap.google.com on a Cell Phone's more limited WAP browser. Dave |
Another idea I just thought of. You can use Gmails HTML-only version, which seems to be faster than Gmail but much better than Gmail Mobile. Here is a direct link:

Re: Gmail Mobile on Nokia 770?
I want to thank all of you for the posts on these mobile email sites. I thought I couldn't read my Verizon email on the 770. My 770 just keeps getting better and better as I learn more and more about all of it's capabilities. Vagalume and now email.
