Which competitor to buy?

Hey guys!

I am in need of a netbook/notebook alike, you know, N900 is good and all, but I do need something bigger to read and edit pdf, doc, etc.
Is this a good time to start looking for one? Should I wait more? If now, which one?

No tablts please, I need a hardware keyboard. Thanks!

Tablets are expensive, and not quite what I expect, + the keyboard for them, are too much to pay for, if I can have one that comes with it.
I want something versatile that I ca bring in my bag to university, and not have to be turning 100 gadgets on, and running many batteries,
to edit, open office and pdf documents, you know?

Well, hehe, it looks nice, but still, it`s the same size as my N900 keyboard almost! I need somethign to be confortable with while typing...

And this one seems NICE, with the keyboard and all... But the main problem I wouldn`t like to have an apple or android gadget, is that I won`t have the " freedom " a desktop on a linux or a windows could give me, folders at hand,
and have even a mouse! Touchy is Touchy, and touchy screenies
bother me with the lack of those little mouse rats...

Would you guys know if any enterprise is about to release any new piece of hardware?
I know that I can't wait for a new thing to come up, because there will always be another one just coming up after it...

Any more ideas? Thanks so far for the replies!

How about the Asus Eee PC-901?

http://www.eee-901.co.uk/eee901-specs.htm

It is quite good and very portable. Plus you can get a version without windows. And it has been tested to run Ubuntu and Meego.

Re: Which competitor to buy?

what is you country?
I'd buy a 10" netbook with hdmi if possible, if not, any dual core netbook cheap enough. Then I'd change the ram, and use a ssd (if rich).
In france I found a netbook without ram or hard disk (so no OS), was perfect for me (just the touchpad is too sensitive, and activates when I type..)

Re: Which competitor to buy?

I just got an Eepc R1010 with windows 7 starter. It works but is hellishly slow. XP drivers are available for it though and I'm contemplating installing that instead although my copy would definitely void the warranty. If you could find one with XP preinstalled, buy it. Mine was already partitioned aswell

I have both sitting on my desk, and I can assure you that in terms of surface, the Viliv n5 is ~twice as big. The screen is almost 1.5" bigger, the keyboard is much bigger.. And it is X86, which is a huge advantage.

lenovo S10-3t
I grabbed one for 222€, and it's a tablet and netbook too, nice piece of hardware for the price

Re: Which competitor to buy?

go for the hp dmz1 its the best all round mini laptop
http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/se...computer_store
or the lenovo ideapad s205 which is cheaper
http://www.shop.lenovo.com/us/notebo.../s-series/s205
both of which are power house laptop for there size "11-12 inches" with very good battery life, powerful garphics and speed in a small form factor, im gonna get one of these two before uni start in the uk.

giorgosmit 2011-08-24 22:25

Re: Which competitor to buy?

I was in the same position some time ago. I wanted something cheap and small to shove in my backpack and carry to the uni library/ wherever. I wanted a keyboard and the potential to use it on some place other than the loo, so a tablet was out of the question.

I got a cheap Toshiba netbook (the NB500) put ubuntu on it along with 2gb of ram, and it works quite well. Linux is more than passably fast on it after a few tweaks, the battery life is good, and it has ran very reliably. I actually found myself using it at home instead of my windows laptop for non-demanding tasks (it multitasks libreoffice, firefox and pdf reader like a boss). By my reckoning, any cheap laptop/ netbook with a linux distro on it should serve you quite well, as long as you don't want to do anything too intensive.

Re: Which competitor to buy?

@pantera

The problem of these eepcs are these very low settings, like 20 gb of hd,
( even though it`s quite fast ) the rest of the hardware won`t follow it's speed...

@erendorn It's brazil, And yeah, I was looking, on the second page mohi2k7 showed a nice ( not a netbook, small at least ) hp pavillion.
It's a nice one.

@ King ralphred, that's why I am thinking twice about the eepcs, and am in need of a good netbook ( I've seen them already with friends, and somes are rubbishly slow... )

@ Hellflyer, Tegra 3, Tegra 3!!!!

@ Radu, I know, but only 1 inch more screen? I need to feel confartable
to watch my teachers talking and go writing on my notes. Can it be written on while on a desk, or does it feel better to type on hand?
Because writting notes at hand are important too...

@ qwazix, Is lenovo reliable? I saw somes...

@ mohi2k7, The best one is this pavillion so far, a notebook, but not a big one, and not as expensive as an mac air!

@ giorgiosmit, the main problem is that linux is not quite well known around my country, so it's hard to find notes with it... But that is a good
solution you got, suits me well too...

I will go look if I can find this dm1z around here, if not, I must look for
a friend on the US !

if you take a netbook with a sufficient hard disk, you could dual boot. It's a bit more work, but ubuntu is very fast on my netbook (but sadly flash is sloooow, even 480p won't do :( )

I personally would look at what's Fujitsu got to offer, they usually have great small portable netbooks/laptops

don't go for hp, please... Lenovo seems to be of a good quality, I don't have it for a long time but it hasn't got any problems till now. If they still have ibm's quality they should be good.

Acer Iconia tab W500 is a cheap tablet and it's a decent choice overall. Since you can change the OS too.

Re: Which competitor to buy?

If you want to stick to ARM and enjoy light, cool, fanless computing with a long battery life, why not try a smartbook?

For example, https://www.genesi-usa.com/store/details/12
$200 - that's quite cheap.

edit: The EU store's here: http://www.genesi-europe.com/store/eu/

Asus Eee PC X101... Thin, light and with MeeGo 1.2. And costing just about $200 USD.
http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_PC/Eee_PC_X101/

Edit: However, battery life is a bit of a downer with only abt. 4 hrs...

don_falcone 2011-08-25 09:46

Re: Which competitor to buy?

That's Atom *shudders* / x86. Probably with a fan too?

luiscesjr 2011-08-25 10:55

Re: Which competitor to buy?

@ erendorn, That's what I thought about last night, and probably what I am
going to do, since I got my N900 I started loving linux even more, and now
I just can't live without it =)

@ bandora, the problem with these fujitsus, are that their good notes are
around a thousand dollars, the cheap ones still uses pentiums-dual cores...
And they use all Intel chips, I wanted AMD ones, I've known AMD for
quite a long time, and I always trusted them more, also they seems
to be developing a lot better chips than Intel lately for desktops and
laptops.

@ qwazix, Why not Hp? I will give a beter look on Lenovo, it's just I don't
trust these new chinese brands ( nothing personal ).

@ govprog, That's a nice one too, I will give a look on it's price around here...

@ wheelybird, I would only go for an ARM with windows 8, not so sure if I will use other
OS than the ones I am accoustumated to...

@volt, Well, Meego makes me think of N9, then of Nokia, then of what
maemo could have been and didn't become ( I knwo nokia has little to do with meego now ) but I don't think I would buy one...
Still, a decent laptop.

@don_falcone, Thanks, I will take a look at the link. And, Atom chips... Argh intel...

@ marrat It's meego man...
Another reason why I wouldn't go for meego? Watch this fight between
iOS x Android...
Who wins? No one knows, everyone one has it's preference, right?
I wouldn't cheer for neighter, but thinking WELL, iOS is designed for
so few devices, it works extremelly well on them.
Look Android for example, it has tons of devices under it's flagship,
and that causes it many problems with apps and so on.
Sometimes I wonder if it will ever happen to meego...

I am still going for the dm1z for now, i found one here in my country for
700 dollars ( 1195 R$ ), well, I don't think I can find cheaper ones around here...
Still, I think I know someone on the US who might send me one, I will
try contact my buddy.

Thanks for the responses so far, and don't think I am in a thanks giving
thread, but since the responses are helpful to me, I hit the thanks
button.

Re: Which competitor to buy?

The thing about MeeGo laptops, though, is you don't really need to have MeeGo on them. It's just a special Linux distro.

That said, if I could compare $700 laptops with $200 laptops, I'd try to get a tablet PC instead of a tablet or netbook. I just like my styluses. Except for my capacitive stylus, that's just a bad joke.

Hehe, 700 dollars here in brazil, 400 in USA... :(

But some meego laptops will come with arm, no? arm is still not THAT
you know... And the ones with x86, well, it's intel atom...

volt 2011-08-25 12:58

Re: Which competitor to buy?

Yeah... Well, they're netbooks. Never really got that market. Just as regular laptops were entering that price segment, they started selling weaker machines.

I know atom is well..atom. But keep in mind even though Ubuntu and other OSes were designed to run on ARM, most software is not. If it were me, until ARM gained more traction in the PC world, I would stick with X86.

luiscesjr 2011-08-25 21:15

Re: Which competitor to buy?

@railroadmaster, I didn't get what this site will help about... sorry.

@pantera, I know, and I don't think arm will substitute x86 for some years to come, it will take much work from them to make an arm run like my AMD X6, or a tegra alike chip run like my graphic cards.

Anyway, I am much likely to buy the dm1z now, it only arrives in my country next month anyway, the ones I've been finding were coming form the US so I would pay high taxes, and next month they will cost at least 30 % less.

I got an HP dvt7 Quad Edition and it's great! I don't know why you are saying not to go for HP.. But I would like to say never go with Gateway/Acer.. They seriously have THE WORST customer service on Earth. I've had 2 Gateway laptops and an Acer desktop and they all failed on me (motherboard issues, all of them; all different machines too).. And I have so much trouble trying to take care of the issue.
