nokia n9 and maemo 5

hi

is it able run maemo 5 on nokia n9

Re: nokia n9 and maemo 5

It needs somebody to do the porting, but there is nothing prohibiting that from happening. I think there is even such an activity ongoing. I would love to see it on n9.

they're porting the hildon desktop to meego. I have a feeling too much of maemo is closed to be able to get a full working version on the n9 (ofono, drivers and what not)

why do you want maemo5 on N9?

But I would like to see a focus on pure maemo6 <--> vanilla meego for a while 1st.
To see what work-arounds & extensions can be done, before bringing heaps of GTK+ UI/middle-ware back in.
Or if both can be done without dramatically slowing one or the other, so be it!

Re: nokia n9 and maemo 5

how difficult would it be just to install hd on harmattan?

jalyst 2011-09-04 17:46

Re: nokia n9 and maemo 5

Should be do-able... Probably more likely to be an option for MeeGoCE though.
But a better approach IMO would be to reinvent hd (or an amalgam between it & harmttan's UI) using Qt components.
And Konttori seems to agree....
I think there's some folk already looking into that, can't recall where I saw it now.

Maemo5 works decently in 256Mb RAM, just try to imagine what it could be do with more RAM... :)

jalyst 2011-09-08 06:54

Re: nokia n9 and maemo 5

^ Still not quite as awesome as Maemo 6 with 1GB of RAM :)
Harmattan's UI looks limited compared to Maemo 5 now.
But it's not as bad as it "seems" to many users...
Any limitations will be rectified quickly, compared to the pace of dev for Maemo 5.

Nokia N9's MeeGo was renamed to Maemo 6, why would you want Maemo 5?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't get me wrong , I adore Maemo5. My N900 is probably the best smartphone I ever had.

But... why would you wanna do that and loose the Meego Harmattan experience? The Swipe UI is genious.

Just get an N900.

Don't judge only by numbers.

for example, Final Fantasy 7 > 8. Windows XP > Millenium.VW Golf > Golf 2. Terminator 2 > 3.

etc

:p

I had an N900--it was my first Nokia--and I loved it, but had to move on to my E7 and N9. I was surprised that the N9, which is designed for one-handed use, did not incorporate the swirl gesture for the zoom function, as Maemo 5 did. In fact, I was wondering if this aspect of Maemo could be brought to the Nokia N9 experience.

This would be a cool opening step to Maemo 5+6 integration. Gestures that are from Maemo 5 and that are fun and useful.

The "swirl gesture" was a clever way to zoom because the N900 lacked multitouch and you couldn't pinch-to-zoom.

The N9 supports pinch-to-zoom. So why having a swirl gesture? Makes no sense imo.

The best things from Maemo5 I miss on my N9 are the keyboard shortcuts.

Those numerous key combinations that behave similar to a PC keyboard. Off course the N9 lacks a keyboard but I think not even the N950 has those shortcuts the N900 has.

So that it stays true to its intention, phone meant for one-handed use. Swirl gesture will allow that, pinch-zoom requires two hands.

Hmmm.. not really. A phone that has a nice size (not too large) like the N9 , can let you pinch to zoom with one hand.

Even easier on my smaller N8.

On large devices though (SGS3, Note, Xperia S, RAZR etc), I agree, it's impossible to operate them with one hand.

Re: nokia n9 and maemo 5

I agree with Patlak that for one-hand use, even with the N9, the swirl gesture is much more convenient. It is true that you can pinch with one hand, using your thumb and your index, but if you stick with one hand use, it won't be accurate at all, you can't pinch wherever you want on the screen, and the gesture is everything but natural. Pinch to zoom is great if you can use your two thumbs or hold the phone with one hand and pinch with thumb + index of the other one.

Actually this thread was open before the Qwazix's one.

Different hands, different experiences, different tastes.

Off course there is not "one truth" and one only. Agreed on that.

The OP's question was answered in about the 1st 7 posts...
The usr AMD massively necro-posted, this thread died about 10mth before he re-spawned it.

With a somewhat useless post of revival as well..

jalyst 2012-06-22 17:03

Re: nokia n9 and maemo 5

Yeah his post wasn't even technically correct, Nokia never renamed MeeGo-Harmattan to Maemo 6x.
Many just refer to it as that because in many ways it's more like Maemo than Vanilla MeeGo.*
Even if it was correct, it added nothing useful to the debate, which IMO should be carried on here or maybe here.
But the latter would be a big necro again, maybe a new thread is in order....

*AKA MeeGoCE or nowadays: MeR+Nemo/Cordia etc.

Yeah man, thanks for the info. tbh, I hadn't noticed it was an old thread.
