[NEWS] Calling all Android users: MAEMO (chroot) running on Android!
Hello!
I have made a MAEMO chroot which works on Android! It does not work as it should, yet. It can not write to the filesystem (the actually chroot.img). I'm not sure why. I need to figure out how to build the scripts properly. But I have got Maemo to boot. I am unsure if I can release it as a lot of Maemo is closed source? I am not sure... I don't want Nokia being *****es.. I'll dump up a few screen shots, I'm just not sure what anyone wants to see :) There is no GUI (yet? Maybe?), just command line (root access). This could seem like a tease, sorry ;) :p If I can not (legally?) upload the files, I can give full details and tutorial (using your own rootfs/opt :D Edit: I have tried to use x11vnc (on N900 and chroot) to get some kind of GUI, but it's a no go... 1st error is: XOpenDisplay failed. No Display or DISPLAY. Maybe this could just be a setting/config? Could not open X DISPLAY ":0" Edit 2: Sorry if this is not as exciting as I think :) I just got damn excepted when it was running, after a few builds and setups.. I had to post up and inform anyone who wanted to know... |

Re: [NEWS] Calling all Android users: MAEMO (chroot) running on Android!
There is not much it can do right now. But if we can find a way to get the/ANY gui (closed source drivers IIRC) to boot, we could possibly have Maemo running on virtually every device..
I honestly don't care if it can not do much, it's just that I'm a Maemophile... I'm just happy to have my xTerm with me again!! :D  As for drivers, could we use drivers from the BeagleBoard maemo (beta4?) versions.. Maybe with the communities help, we could get it to be useful, but right now.. Not worth the effort for most people (IMO). |

One small step for Maemo...

One off-topic question: what's with that banner? ("new script manager pro is out"). Can it be really true that the Android x-term has ads? or you are using some third-party x-term?
(Sorry I have absolutely no clue about Android, but it just hurt my eyes when I saw that). |
Re: [NEWS] Calling all Android users: MAEMO (chroot) running on Android!
Most of the free android apps does have advertisment in it.
Android does not have a shell out of the box. There is nothing awesome like the maemo apps ;) |
Re: [NEWS] Calling all Android users: MAEMO (chroot) running on Android!
I will admit, over the last week I have been playing with my new HP touchpad and reading up on how to get Ubuntu loaded on it and how the possibillties of running Hildon UI on top. But with this news, I am now wondering how possible it could be to have the full blown maemo OS on it?
That may have to be for another day for now. |
Re: [NEWS] Calling all Android users: MAEMO (chroot) running on Android!
Yeah. I'm just using a quick launch program to boot scripts quickly.
I hate using virtual keyboards, androids vkb's are just ****. I can redo the images in a proper terminal any anyone wants the pretty terminal green and black :) It let's me launch a script directly from my desktop with a widget. I can deal with the adds to save typing. |
Re: [NEWS] Calling all Android users: MAEMO (chroot) running on Android!
Write access is working. Which also means write access should work on my Meego images!!
It was a dumb *** mistake. Did not have read/write permissions. (777) Simple fix - chmod +x |

Re: [NEWS] Calling all Android users: MAEMO (chroot) running on Android!
I'm back!
This evening (7am now) I'm going to try create another Maemo image to upload :D it will be basic with nothing in it other than fresh install. We need to see if maybe someone can figure out a way to get it running better than I am able to. I will upload to drop box. If you want my other images (Meego and Angstrom) grab them ASAP as dropbox might pull my account due to higher downloads. |
Re: [NEWS] Calling all Android users: MAEMO (chroot) running on Android!
Keep in mind Nokia Legal still exists.

Re: [NEWS] Calling all Android users: MAEMO (chroot) running on Android!
Actually, with a fair bit of work, this may be possible?
Google releases all sources for Android apparently, & there's a popular minimalist custom ROM called CyanogenMod (read more from wikipedia). It's available for many Android handsets. So anyway, it would be possible to remove the top Android layers from those ROMs, then make maemo talk to a custom built maemo-JNI layer, that in turn interfaces to Androids hardware abstraction layer? (yea this is a bit dumb, but you'd get the radio modules, etc?) Or alternatively, maemo would use kernel modules on those android handsets directly, where i imagine maemo would then have access to many capabilities already? Anyway, all high level fluff... I bought a Droid 4, flashed with CyanogenMod & had been looking at articles to bring same level of n900 functionality to droid 4... so far not very near that... Some folks may be interested to read a bit about this tho: http://whiteboard.ping.se/Android/Debian |
Re: [NEWS] Calling all Android users: MAEMO (chroot) running on Android!
Seems like a lot of work...
Should try boot Maemo (don't "release" anything) and try get the GUI to work. I got some functionality (BAAAASIC!) but never got the GUI to work, tried VNC. I gave up not long later, was a fun night or two but was not worth the effort - easier to just use the N900. |
